Inception of the College and Its Brief History : Swami Vivekananda, after establishing the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897, wanted to
rehabilitate the past glories of our motherland through an education which would
combine in it the best elements of the oriental and the occidental cultures, the
sacred and the secular, the material and the spiritual.
With a view to giving shape to Swamiji’s comprehensive scheme of education, the
authorities of the Mission started this college, Vidyamandirara in 1941 under the
auspices of the Saradapitha, a branch of the Ramakrishna Mission, as an
Intermediate Arts College.
The college was upgraded to a three-year degree college with effect from July 1960.
Post-graduate teaching was introduced from the academic session 2006-2007.
In 2010, the college was adjudged by the UGC as a ‘College with Potential for
Excellence’.
In 2010 again, the college was conferred upon the status ‘Autonomous’ by the UGC
and the State Government.
In 2013, the college was re-accredited by NAAC with Grade A.
To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary, the college established ‘Swami
Vivekananda Research Centre’ to run PhD programmes and other research activities.
This centre has received the affiliation from Calcutta University.
In 2014, the college has been adjudged by the UGC as a ‘College with Potential for
Excellence’ for the 2nd time.
In 2014-2015 session the Microbiology Department of the College was given ‘West
Bengal BOOST Award’.

Service Activities (Extension and Outreach
Programmes): Activities of NSS Wing of the College :
Brahmananda Book Bank: A considerable number of school going students in the neighborhood of our
college find it quite challenging to buy their regular school books along with the essential study stationaries. Responding to the needs of such students, NSS wing came up with a book bank christened ‘Brahmananda Book Bank’. Through this book bank - books, pens and note books were handed out to the students of Belur Girls’ School on 22.09.2016.
Number of student beneficiaries: 19 girls of class XI and XII

Eco Club: With a view to keeping the pollution under
control and making the environment green, NSS wing introduced Eco Club on 19th August, 2013. Currently, the Eco Club takes care of the plants on the college campus and also spreads awareness among the local youths about the importance of planting trees.
Working days: one day in a week
General health checkup camp:
Ill health is the cause of many diseases among the youth. So, to make
students aware of the condition of their health, NSS wing organized a one day
general health check-up camp on
28/08/2016.
Name of doctors: Dr. Samir Naskar,
Dr. Chaitali Mukherjee, Dr. Rahul

Maity
Number of students who received a
health checkup: 253
University level Certificate Course:
A university level certificate course on Social Service—Blood Donor
Motivation was offered to students in collaboration with West Bengal Blood Donors
Association. The four day course aims to build up an army of trained honorary blood
donor motivators in the community who in turn will be capable of motivating,
recruiting and retaining voluntary blood donors and imparting scientific education on
blood and blood donation to common people as well as to school students – the
donors of tomorrow. It is conducted twice a year.
1st phase held on: 29,30,31 of August and 1 of September 2016
Number of students: 25
2nd phase held on: 13,14,15,16 of
February 2017
Number of students: 31
Pre-Saradotsav Cloth distribution:
Characteristically, Saradotsav is an
occasion of joy and festivity. And yet it
is an irony that quite a few children in
our society still remain deprived of a
simple joy like owning a new dress during this important festive season. To remedy
such a glaring disparity, at least in the immediate vicinity of our college, NSS wing
formed a survey team which traveled to nearby schools and handed out vouchers to
the needy students. Afterwards, the children along with their guardian came to our
college to receive the clothes on 26.09.2016. The smiling faces of the children, upon
receiving these small tokens of love, made our limited endeavor truly rewarding.
Total figure of children beneficiaries: 291
Blood donation camp:
The blood is the life. Many people in our country die due to deficiency of
blood when required. Some people are there who are scared of donating blood.
Thus, to increase the blood donation awareness and to remove fear in the people,
NSS wing organized three blood donation
camps.
Blood collected by NRS hospital on
04.09.2016: 105 donors
Blood collected by Association of
Voluntary Blood Donor on 26.03.2017:
80 donors
National foundation for communal
harmony:
Every year the NSS volunteers go out to raise funds for National Foundation
for Communal Harmony. This year on
02.03.2017 the students set out for this
job in the morning and returned in the
evening. The collected money was sent to
the National Foundation for Communal
Harmony, New Delhi (An autonomous
organization under the Ministry of Home
Affairs, Government of India)
Groups: 28
Number of volunteers: 150
Area: Kolkata, Howrah and
surrounding areas
Total collection: Rupees 4152
Free Coaching:
We hear of coaching centre,
tuition centre everywhere. Some students
with poor financial background cannot think of going to those centres. So volunteers
of NSS wing started coaching the needy students from the Belur locality in
collaboration with Janashikshamandira.
Number of teachers: 7
Number of students: 10
NSS Wing-The Guardian:
The NSS wing of Vidyamandira is not just about organizing camps. In fact, it works as a veritable
guardian of the campus - overseeing, in particular, its sanitary & hygienic aspects. Volunteers keep
the campus clean, remove weeds from the playground, broom the college building classrooms and
clean the hostel kitchen from time to time on Sundays. It also eagerly extends a helping hand
whenever required by the institution. Truly speaking, NSS wing of Vidyamandira motivates the
people by setting examples of doing any sort of work without hesitation for the welfare of the
society
Activities of the NCC Wing of the college :
A separate unit of the senior N.C.C. (Army) has been in existence in our college since
August 1959. One of our teachers, Sri Arup Kumar Dhabal, has completed his Pre-
Commissioned Training on 18th February 2006 and has taken charge as the ANO of
the Vidyamandira NCC Unit. Swami Pratibodhananda is presently the monk-in-
charge of the NCC wing. The NCC wing of the college is fully funded by Govt. of India
and State government of West Bengal.

Our Challenges : A lack of space which prevents the College from either constructing
new buildings or expanding horizontally and vertically the existing
buildings, is a major impediment in starting new courses and creating
adequate space for research activities. There is also a paucity of land in
the immediate surroundings which can be acquired for the
development of the College.
Delayed release of Government funding, especially from UGC, and
other Central Governmental agencies, for creation of new facilities and
maintenance and sustenance of existing infrastructure including high-
end laboratory equipment is a serious problem that we are facing now.
The socio-economic background of many of the students (some of
them are first and second generation learners) admitted to the College
is responsible for poor language competence (both in their mother
Page 54 of 58
tongue as well as in English). This leads to an unsatisfactory level of
comprehension and communication, particularly in the first two
semesters.
Students coming from the underprivileged section of the society (almost
50% of the total strength) generally lack in nutrition that is necessary for
proper growth and physical fitness. They also lack the desired level of
hygiene consciousness.
Many students coming from the urban background belong to either
nuclear or broken families. Some of them find it difficult to cope with
the demands of a community life based on caring and sharing.
Sometimes this leads to psychological imbalance.
The semester system poses a number of problems which the College
has not been able to come to terms with.
Retaining the unique character of the College in an increasingly
consumerist society poses a great challenge to the ideals the institution
upholds.
Our Future Plan : The College is keen to find a land not less than 6 acres, where it can
start its second campus.
The College authorities are conscious of the need to start more
Postgraduate courses befitting an autonomous institution.
The College is also thinking of starting some career-oriented courses.
Setting up new linkages with industries is also under process.
Creation of a high quality research ambience in this College is our
vision. We are fervently trying to translate the ideal of ‘Lab to Land’
into a reality.
Reaching the marginalized section of the society and offering them
the scope to cope with the fast changing world of knowledge will be
our future ‘Sadhana’. To reach this target, the College has constituted
a new Committee named ‘Social Outreach Committee’.
Our Gratitude : o We are grateful to Higher Education Dept of Govt of West Bengal and
RUSA-MHRD for their generous financial support which is helping us
in building up new infrastructure. Our sincere thanks to all our donors,

institute of higher learning and upholding the educational philosophy of
Swami Vivekananda. I thank Swami Pratibodhananda, Br
Pavitrachaitanya, Sri Ranjan Biswas and others including student
volunteers who have worked hard to make this Convocation a success.
Finally I convey my thanks and gratitude to Prof D. P. Singh, Director, NAAC
and an ardent devotee of Ramakrishna Movement, who will deliver the 5th
Convocation Address during this year and Respected Prof. Rajagopal Dhar
Chakraborti, Hon’ble Registrar of University of Calcutta and a great friend and
guide to this college, for his inspiring presence. My sincere thanks and respect to
guests and guardians and my love and best wishes to those who will receive today
their degrees and present students of Vidyamandira.
Vision and Prayer : Vivekananda once envisioned of a University to be born on the holy soil of Belur
Math – the power house of new age spiritual movement. Vidyamandira, the
dream-child of His is nothing but the nucleus of such a big Institute. On 24th
April, 1963, Revered Swami Madhavanandaji Maharaj, the-then President
Page 56 of 58
Maharaj, released a press note at a press conference at Belur Math, where he
mentioned that as Nalanda and Bikramshila came up under Buddhist
Monasticism, an attempt is in pipeline to create a University under Ramakrishna
Mission at Belur Math. Ramakrishna Movement is still waiting to translate this
attempt into reality.
Vidyamandira is gradually moving towards a new era. In this current academic
session, Vidyamandira has filed its first Indian patent which has already been
published in their journal. No doubt, this will play an important role in developing
the research culture of this institute. Our aim is not only meant for achieving
some spectacular academic success, rather our struggle is to create knowledge
that will transform both the outer and inner world of this human society.
Furthermore, the mission and vision of this college have always taken the pledge
to create an individual who will develop in him best human qualities.
Once Nalanda became the hub of wisdom of the millennium – the centre of
knowledge across the national boundaries. Will we not be able to create such an
institute revolving round Vidyamandira, the Temple of Learning, with all our
Sadhana where age-old Vedic knowledge and the cutting age modern
technologies will shake hands, where the hedonistic modern civilisation will get
trained to control the restless mind under the auspices of serene meditative
temple ambience, where a curriculum will be framed to develop head, heart and
hand simultaneously and not to make only a bright mark sheet or an appealing CV
? Time is perhaps ringing the bell of the hour. Choice is ours whether we will
respond to it or not.
Let us not think that running a college and a university is the be-all and end-all
of all of our efforts. Swamiji’s vision born out of the secret instructions of the
Great Master in his last days cannot conclude in such a way. Really, there are
miles to go before we sleep. Let us meditate on our Holy Trio and let us seek
their benign blessings so that we can work as their true instruments in building
up a real Temple of Learning – which was once the vision of Vivekananda and is
now the Sadhana of our time.
