1. About Hospitality Industry

1.1 Evolution of Hospitality Industry

The history of the hospitality industry dates all the way back to the

Colonial Period in the late 1700s. Things have changed quite a lot

since then; the hospitality industry has experienced significant

development over the years. The industry as we know it today began to

take form in the early 1950s and 60s, leading the way for growth into

the dynamic industry we know today. The Hotel Industry in Nepal too is

considered old endeavors. The first hotel being established at 1951

(Nepal Hotel, Jawalakhel) could only run for a year. However on 1956

Hotel Coronation started its service as a full phase commercial

Industry. The growth of the industry wasn’t pacing up until the peace

process in 2008.Now the hotels in Nepal are growing at an yearly rate

of 8%. Hotel Association Nepal (1966) has under its umbrella, 8

five-star, 3 four-star, 12 three-star, 22 two-star and 18 one-star

hotels and 165 non-stars, four allied and 33 resorts. There are 307

hotels including 42 outside the valley treating almost a million

foreigners every year.

1.2 History of Hospitality Industry

Our country Nepal is very rich in tradition and culture. Nepal has geographical diversity. We

have the highest pick Mt. Everest in out country; Lord Buddha was also born in Nepal. Our

country has many unique features that can attract thousands of tourists. Foreigners are very

enchanted by the culture and traditions we follow.

Nepal Tourism board has been organizing many events and programs intending to attract more

tourists. In the year of 2011 Nepal celebrated Tourism year, which was seen to be successful.

Since then many new Hotels were introduced providing very home away from home

environment to the arriving tourists.

Boris Lissanevitch a Russian hotelier was the person who requested Nepal’s late crown prince

Mahendra to let Thomas Cook and Sons Ltd to send visitors to our country. In the year of1955n

first tourist visa were issued. Two Brazillians and Ten Americans were the first tourists to visit

Nepal. They were accommodated at the Hotel owned by Boris himself called Royal Hotel. In the

very exact year a private airline “Himalaya Airways” got launched which was an advantage for

hospitality industry. Nepal transportation department was established in the year of 1957, also

National tourist development board started operating in Nepal. By the year of 1965 arrival of

tourists increased up to 40%.

The Hotel industry is one of the positive features of Nepal, as the peace process was held in year

2008. Hospitality industry in Nepal is known to be the oldest moneymaking trade. According to

the history it is said that the team of husband and wife started ancient inn, they gave space to the

travellers to comfort themselves. They also provided the visitors with food and drinks. This trend

continued for about hundreds of years.

1.3 Present Trend of Hospitality Industry

The hospitality Industry is considered as the largest and highly profitable business after

Petroleum and ammunition industry. The Hospitality Industry along with tourism aids a total

10% of the global economy. With the advancement of technology over past few years the

hospitality industry is also growing as the concept of global world has made travelling easy. The

concept of online booking and reservation too has aided in the growth of industry.

Nepal being naturally blessed attracts around million of tourists each year thus demanding a

progress in the quality and facilities. The Hotel industry being a profitablr source of industry

(growing 9% annually) has been providing jobs to around 15000 skilled manpower and

contributing 3.5% of the national economy. The demand of hotel industry is expected to grow

more and seems to be a sustainable source of Income.

The most likely query to come around while you are about to pursue a career in a certain field is

the scope of the job availability and degree of security and stability of your job. Hospitality field

might not make an individual a millionaire overnight but the degree of satisfaction is quite high

for the individuals wanting travels and changes as part of their day-to-day job.

variety, not only in terms of the hours you work, but also the work you do during those hours.

2 Types of hotels and tourism in Nepal

2.1 Tourism in Nepal

Nepal a small landlocked country (147181 sq km) is naturally blessed by top 8 highest peaks

amongst top 10, serene perennial rivers, wide range of flora and fauna. Possessing 8 of the 10

highest mountains in the world, Nepal is a hotspot destination for mountaineer, mountain biking,

bungee jumping, rock climbing and mountain climbing, trekking, hiking, bird watching, flights,

paragliding and hot air ballooning over the mountains of Himalaya, exploring the waterways by

raft, kayak or canoe and jungle safaris especially in the Terai region are the major source of

attraction.

Besides the diversified terrain the culture followed here in Nepal is also a major source to attract

tourist as pilgrims to perform various holy rituals in major events like shiva ratri, teej……

The major religion in Nepal is Hinduism, and the Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu, attracts

many pilgrims and tourists. Other Hindu pilgrimage site include the temple complex in

Swargadwari located in the Pyuthan district, Janaki Mandir located in Janakpurdham of Mithila

region, lake Gosainkunda , the temples at Devghat, Manakamana temple in the Gorkha District,

and Pathibhara near Phungling, Mahamrityunjaya Shivasan in Palpa District where biggest

metallic idol of Lord Shiva is Located.

Dang valley is also a sacred place for Hindus as well as other religions. Kalika and Malika Devi

in Chhillikot hill, Ambekeshawori temple, Krishna temple, Dharapani temple etc. are sacred

place in Dang district. Chillikot hill is also a good place for sightsee ing and also a ancient palace

of a king.

Buddhism is the largest minority religion. The World Heritage site Lumbini, which is

traditionally considered to be the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, is an important pilgrimage site.

Another prominent Buddhist sites are Boudha Nath and Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple,

in Kathmandu.

Muktinath is a sacred place for Hindus as well as Buddhists. The site is located in Muktinath

Valley, Mustang district.

2.2 Types of Hotels

Nepal has wide range of accommodation facilities that range from international standard star

hotels to budget hotels and lodges. There are about 1031 government registered hotels, resorts,

apartments ,…..which are the reliable ones.

In the last few decades, Nepal has seen the mushrooming of world-class hotels. There is an

excellent range of places to stay, from comfortable backpacker hostels and lodges (approx. 700

per night) to more expensive international style hotels (approx. 50000 per night)

Different models of Hotels for accommodation are:

1-Hostels or Backpackers are a loosely defined form of guesthouse, generally low budget

compared to other places to sleep. Although often used by youth there is usually no upper age

limit.

2-Capsule hotels are a cheap form of accommodation, usually with a dorm bed in a hostel, in

terms of pricing. The "rooms" are little more than small one-person capsules with only a

mattress, radio, and TV.

3-Bed and Breakfasts :(B&Bs) and Guesthouses provide hotel style rooms. However, they are

typically smaller residences and you will interact with your hosts and other guests, often eating

together and sharing common spaces.

4-A hospitality exchange or home stay network is an organization that connects travellers with

local residents in the cities they're visiting. If travellers can connect with the right people at the

right time, they can get room and sometimes board in the place they're visiting for free or at a

deep discount. Network size goes from a few thousands to a hundred thousands, and most

networks are growing steadily.

5-Car camping, Caravanning, RV camping:

Page 9: Report on the Hospitality Industry of Nepal

Sristi Lama January 12, 2016

Management, Investigation and Recruitment Report (MN6P03) 9

this form of camping involves carrying your equipment in your motor vehicle, which you drive

right to your campsite. Unlike more traditional camping, car camping allows you to carry quite a

bit more equipment, and the focus is usually to enjoy the site, cook-outs, day hikes, and other

outdoor activities. Caravan parks tend to have two or three types of accommodation: powered

sites to put your caravan and car; caravans owned by the park that you can stay in; and small

cabins with a bit more space. Caravan parks are usually located in medium sized towns and

cities, or in very popular tourist spots.

6-Villas: are suitable mode of accommodation to relax and enjoy with your family in privacy,

By renting a private villa you will have your own kitchen, living/dining room, bedroom and in

many cases your own private swimming pool. Renting a villa provides you not only with more

space and privacy but is also a more economical option rather than staying at a small hotel

room.A villa can usually accommodate a minimum of 4 people.

7-Vacation rentals: Many residents of popular tourist destinations lease their houses and

apartments to vacationers.. The guests will have full use of the residence, usually with utilities

included but no servicing or meals. This approach can be cheaper than booking a hotel room for

the same length of time (and give more space than a hotel room), especially if travelling with a

family or other sizable group of people. Facilities will vary depending on the property, but

usually include kitchen and laundry facilities and possibly amenities like a swimming pool.

8-House Sitting :While travelling many people use house sitting as a form of accommodation. It

is free accommodation while you get to live in the comfort of a house. House sitting involves an

agreement between the house sitter and the home owner that the house sitter will occupy a house

while the home owner is away.

3 Contribution of Hospitality Industry: After Petroleum and ammunition Industry Tourism and Hospitality sector is the largest

Industry contributing almost 10% to the global economy. The transaction this industry

exercises is tentatively seven trillion USD annually. The economic growth is almost 3%

which is considerably high as per the other Industries. Almost 5.1 million people are

employes in this field. Travel & Tourism not only outpaced the wider economy, but also

grew faster than other significant industries such as financial and business services, retail

and distribution, public services, transport and manufacturing. Tourism and Hospitality

industry is major contributor in National economy. This sector directly contributes 3% GDP,

it earns 15% of total foreign currency and 30% of total revenue which is remarkable high.

The number of registered Hotels in Nepal has crossed over 1100 and these Hotels seek for

skilled manpower and the manpower is always in high demand. This job opportunity created

thus helps and motivates youths to stay in their homeland. The tourist entering Nepal

annually is nealy a million and Nepal has every sort of Hotels from cheap lodges to lavish

hotels as per the demand of the customer, The demand of lavish and luxurious hotels has

hiked in past few years and hence it has become a source or attraction for international hotel

chains to invest here in Nepal. People have been successful in establishing hotels in even

remote areas and this has created the locals with job opportunities and has aided them in

adapting modernity and ultimately increment in the quality of life they enjoy. The minds

have been broaden up and people have started to adapt with the changed the industry

created. The eatablishment of hotels in remote area had helped in development of

infrastructures in the particular areas like the roads are beinf connected to even the remotest

areas, the facilities of drinking water and sanitation have been improved and mostly the

reach of internet in almost everywhere can be considered as a great achievement. The

Hospitality field has helped us to expose our culture and promote tourism in global arena.

The number of rourist visiting Nepal is in increasing trencd. The tourist visiting the hotels

crave for adventures popular in Nepal like rafting, bungee jumping, canoeing etc. thus other

sectors are also growing with the growth and advancement of Hotels. Establishment of

Hotels comes with a high cost and large construction and since only private sectors are

active in this particular field they have a great opportunity of showingtheir calibre and

earninf. The government too is benefited as the revenue it earns as tax is quite high in this

field. Many secondary job opportunities come along with the establishment of a hotel

industry like ticketing, travel agencies, money transfer etc. In this way the Hospitality

Industry contributes in wide sectors ultimately helping nation grow strong. The contribution

this industry has made in raising quality of life of individuals by creating job opportunities is

remarkable.

4 Analysis of the Hospitality Industry:

4.1 SWOT Analysis

is a must for any industry prior its establishment because it helps in finding the Internal Strength and weakness of the project and external opportunities and threats an industry has to face in its

long run. 1--Strength:

With around 1100 government registered hotels around the nation it is quite ample number to cope with around a million tourist visiting annually. The establishment of various international

chain hotel too has aided in the progress of industry as it meets the standard some tourist look for in terms of brands and luxury. Some points to strengthen the hotel industry in Nepal are:

Hotel Industry is one of the oldest and trust worthy endeavors contributing 3.5% of the total national economy.

Natural and Cultural Diversity Nepal along its 800 km length along the Himalayan axis has a diverse terrain from 194-8848 ft .From top highest 8 amogst 10 peaks to the terai

belt the geography here has a lot to offer for the tourist.the serene perennial rivers flowing from the Himalayas to the lower range too attracts tourist for rafting to various

recreation.Nepal practicing a unique culture attracts handful of tourists and pilgrims who come here to pay homage and visit several temples and monasteries.

Demand Supply Gap

The number of trusted and registered standard hotels here in Nepal is just handful and the supply as compared to the annual demand is quite low and hence the hotels providing

quality service are always benefited to handful of tourists all seasons.

Tourism and hospitality industry is always taken care of by the government as it is one of

the major sources of revenue contributing in the national economy. There are several international chains receiving handsome donations for the growth of this industry.

2- Weakness

The infrastructure and technology if not sufficient always weakens the hospitality industry.

The cost involved in establishment of a hotel is quite high as the cost of land has hiked drastically over few years. The capital that could be utilized in developing hotels

infrastructure is being used to occupy the space so it always weakens the industry.

Hospitality Industry here in Nepal is considered as a luxury and the tax allocated for the particular is quite high which always stops one from having a handsome profit.

some hotels boast to provide international standard facilities and luxury however they fail to comply with it.

The budget required for a standard and luxury hotels establishment is extremely high and hence its development is always a slow process.

Page 12: Report on the Hospitality Industry of Nepal

1

3- Opportunities

The diverse terrain and natural beauty Nepal poses never fail to attract satisfactory

amount of tourist.

The culture practiced here is always a major look out and attracts several tourist and

pilgrims during several events.

The number of tourist and internal tourism is incredibly increasing and hence the hotels

are always in high demand.

luxury hotels with international brand is mushrooming and hence people get to work with

International experts and always help in growing and grooming their business.

4-Threats

the mushrooming of cheap lodges and guest house are replacing the expensive and luxury

hotels.

The politics in Nepal is in transition phase for over a decade or two

and the instability here is always a threat to this sector.

well trained and skilled manpower in this sector are always on demand but the number

present here is significantly low which causes instability in the management.

since the investment in this industry solely comes from private sector there is a monopoly

thus the industry never significantly grows.

4.2 PEST analysis Is a strategic approach of analyzing the behavior of hospitality in several factors that affect the

industry? Political, Economical, Social and Technological factors are major topics of

consideration in this approach, there are several factors that directly affect the hospitality

industry but these are the major factors that affects quantitatively high.

The PEST factors Impacts

Politics Nepal has been in a political transition phase over few decades and

this instability has always been an obstacle in the growth of hospitality industry.

The vandalism and destruction the infrastructures had to face during

Emergency period until 2008 considerably hampered this industry.

The political parties always have a

interest of conflicts among themselves and hence this field hasnt

had an opportunity to grow as no one has made policies favorable for this

industry.

the major stakeholders of this industry

comprises of investors from private sector and the instability in the politics always discourages

them.

Nepal being beautiful and blessed with

several peaks, rivers and holy places the government hasn’t made any

policies to promote tourism and expose these industries in global arena.

Economics Hospitality Industry usually is established either by the investors

from private sector or little international Agencies. The investment

is quite high as compared to the payback period and is always a

discouragement.

The Government being poor and

Page 14: Report on the Hospitality Industry of Nepal

1

4 SRISTI LAMA ID no: 13053093

focusing precisely on infrastructure development has fewer budgets allocated for the tourism and

Hospitality field.

The government however has made efforts on promoting tourism and

exposing the field globally and this major step has encouraged the investors.

Nepal being a under developed country the youth never are satisfied

by the quality of life here and hence head abroad for a bright future thereby leaving only a handful of

skilled manpower’s to work in this industry.

This business is lead by the private sector only and hence there is a

monopoly, which distracts genuine investors.

The economic condition of Nepal never

allows one to invest on luxury when major population is under poverty

line.

Social Nepal having most of its people illiterate, they fail to adapt to the

changes and modernity that comes with the development of hospitality

sectors in their area,

The migration from villages to urban

cities has hiked in the past few years and this always leads to a lack of skilled manpower.

People from Nepal can’t enjoy the luxury life and spend much on hotels

as the income they generate is not sufficient enough for their day to day survival.

People in Nepal are culturally sensitive and they fail to adapt with

the modernity that comes with hotels development.

Page 15: Report on the Hospitality Industry of Nepal

Sristi Lama January 12, 2016

Management, Investigation and Recruitment Report (MN6P03) 15

Technological With the advancement of technology of past few years the hospitality

industry is being well supported and well exposed in global arena.

People can book and reserve the hotels

they wish to stay through internet these days, which helps them as

well the hotels as there is no middle man involved.

The easy money exchange and fund transfer has made it easy for the people to spend more in their travel and

luxury.

The use of internet has exposed the

beauty of nepal and has attracted several tourist willing to spend quality

time here,

Page 16: Report on the Hospitality Industry of Nepal

5. Conclusion and Recommendation

Hospitality and tourism industry industry being a majoy contributor in national economy and

major source of foreign remittance the industry should be properly guided, monitored and

strengthened with firm policy. The government should allocate sufficient budget to promote

tourism and encourage private sectors to invest in this sector which ultimately helps in the

growth of the hospitality sector. Nepal has just started practicing its new constitution which

people longed and fought for over a decade and hence this major step will be a milestone in the

advancement and progess of this sector as a staple political environment and progress of this

sector as a stable political environment is expected with a concept of economic revolution.

The result from strategic analysis like SWOT and PEST show that this particular sector has wide

scope and aids in growth of several other income generating sectors (adventure, wilderness,

money and transfer) thus creating several job opportunities and ultimately contribution in

national economy. Many international chains hotels are willing to invest but the political

instability is a major huddle which should be eradicted. The monopoly of private sectors is a

discouragement for international investors and hence its duty of government to create a secure

environment to encourage people to invest here. The whole hospitality sector should unite stand

together and come with strategies and ideas to help this sector grow.
