1. Lecture on the topic of Climate Change and the role of forests
Issues such as the causes and consequences of climate change and the role of forests in
mitigating negative climate effects were addressed. The students presented ideas related to what
can be done to mitigate such effects, such as the replanting of trees in devastated areas by illegal
exploiters because trees are crucial in capturing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and
transforming into oxygen, they also emphasized the importance of the use of recycling for the
treatment and reuse of various solid wastes.
A lecture was held on June 2, 2017, at the amphitheater
of Samora Moisés Machel Secondary School, Beira,
with the theme "Climate change and had as speaker
Professor Geraldo Sotaria of the Pedagogical
University, Delegation of Beira.
Representatives of ADEL-Sofala, Pedagogical
University and Secondary Schools of the City of Beira
were present in a total of 63 men and 30 women. The
objectives were as follows:
• Sharing ideas and information on climate
change;
• Sensitize students about the harmful effects of
climate change on the environment;
• Acquire experiences of how to combat and
mitigate such effects.
Impacts:
• Sensitized students on the effects of
climate change;
• They suggested that we should all
change our habits that harm the
environment;
• They defended the importance of
regular debates on climate change.

A trip to the Njalane in Nhangau Administrative
Post (35 km from Beira) was held on June 9, 2017
with students from Ponta-Gêa, where
representatives of ADEL-Sofala, Ponta-Gêa
Secondary School and Nhangau Natural Resources
Management Committee (NRMC) participated. A
total of 28 (16 males, 12 females) took part in the
event. The objectives were as follows:
• Promote the practice of conservation and
protection of the Mangrove for students;
• Sensitize communities and local authorities on
illegal mangrove exploitation;
Follow-up actions:
Further discussion on climate change and other related topics on an ongoing basis for
dissemination of information and sharing of experiences.
2. Excursion: Field visit, Reforestation in the marine environment and sensitization directed to communities and local authorities on the illegal exploitation of the mangrove.
In an introductory note, the NRMC promoted a mini-
training for students in which issues of the
predominant type of mangrove in the forest were
discussed. The importance of mangrove in protecting
the coast in case of high winds and seas, helps in the
breeding of marine species such as crab and shrimp
as well as in beekeeping. The mangrove forest must
be protected and conserved as it helps to defend
against natural catastrophes.
Rua Pero de Covilha, N° 1005, Beira. Tel: 23362142; 84-3621420; www.adelsofala.org.mz
After this mini-training the students were explained
how to proceed with the reforestation beginning by
identifying the seed whether it is ready to be
replanted or not. This was followed with the
instructions on the spacing between the mangrove
plants to avoid competition.
The main impacts observed were the following:
• Students learned about the importance of
mangroves;
• Acquisition of reforestation techniques and
experience of mangrove replanting;
• Acquisition of knowledge of when the
mangrove seed is ready to be replanted/
reforested;
The students presented questions of how the inspection of the mangrove is done to avoid illegal
exploitation, and the officials replied that they are constantly in the mangrove to inspect and in
case of seizure of illegal explorers these are punished by confiscating the mangrove and the
explorer proceeds with the payment of established fines and is forced to replant the mangrove
that was destroyed.
Follow-up actions:
Increase sharing of knowledge with the communities, local authorities and environmental clubs
of other schools by participating students.

3. Training in associativism and leadership of the association
Trainings were held for 2 associations, namley;
AJOMAC (21 Men and 09 women) and AMAI
MUSSANANHI ( 2 Men and 10 women)
people taking part.
Issues discussed included conflict mediation,
transparency with the association's funds
management and mandate of the managers.
The association for young people in Macuti was
created in 1994 though they had not made a
meeting of provision of accounts and records to
the members. In this sense, the participants
requested that an ordinary meeting be held on
the second day to discuss general aspects in the
presence of the facilitators.
The meeting was held the next day where the
chairman of the general assembly and members
of the fiscal council were told that only by
working together can hey achieve he
association’s goals.
While for AMAI association, the participants
said that their social management should be
present to take stock their style of leadership. In
summary, the training in AMAI association was
productive. The association has been having
public works funds for environmental sanitation
project.
In addition to the above-mentioned
issues, the following were also discussed;
• What are the roles and duties of
mediators;
• What should be done in the event
of a conflict to be solved;
• It has been explained that the
mediator must be ethical and
secretive, having the ability to
listen to both parties without
breaking the secrecy.
Rua Pero de Covilha, N° 1005, Beira. Tel: 23362142; 84-3621420; www.adelsofala.org.mz
Trainings were held in 6 secondary schools,
namely; 1st May-Manga, Samora Moisés
Machel Muchatazina, do Estoril, Mateus
Sansão Mutemba, da Manga secondary schools
with a total of 94 (41males, 53 females)
students taking part.
The following were distributed;
• 110 seedlings (plants); Lemon, cashew,
papaya • Seeds of cabbage, lettuce and tomato
• 18 watering cans;12 Buckets, 12 hoes
and 6 rake to continue this activity at
school
Follow-up actions:
To expand the associativism in the other associations so that they have the knowledge of their
rights and duties and the leadership are important subjects (activity monitoring, saving and credit
formation) as a way of meeting the members to enable the discussion of their concerns.
4. Training and supply of seedlings of fruit trees and seeds for school garden.
5.
Rua Pero de Covilha, N° 1005, Beira. Tel: 23362142; 84-3621420; www.adelsofala.org.mz
There are teachers responsible for agriculture and they will be in charge. With this training,
students are expected to continue to take care of plants because the trees are of great importance
for the environment and for health as is the case of reducing the incidence of skin cancer and
other respiratory diseases, fruit trees have the important role of feeding man and birds.
Follow-up actions:
• Empower students more often to gain knowledge of the importance of trees in the
environment;
• Monitor beneficiary schools to evaluate the continuity of activities after training;
• Help students gain the practical aspects of how to plant trees and home gardens for family
livelihoods and income generation.
Impacts:
• The students were aware of the
importance of the tree to the
environment and climate
changes;
• Acquired the importance of
planting fruit trees;

5. Climate change and citizenship training for the environment and citizenship club of Ponta-Gêa Secondary School
In addition to the presentation in powerpoint, the teacher of way to raise the reflection of the
students and members of the club of the environment passed a video that raised a debate of
diverse mitigating measures to be adopted by all face to the climatic changes. The students said
that it is important to proceed with the reforestation of the devastated areas, to make use of
recycling for the reuse of solid wastes, especially those that are not bio-degradable, increased
forest control and the elimination of the forest and wildlife law in Country as well as all existing
information on climate change.
There were representatives of the ADEL,
students and teacher of the school that
benefited from a training on climate
change and citizenship of a total of 14
boys and 09 girls.
Issues were addressed on climate change,
harmful effects on the environment,
causes, and consequences for public
health.
Impacts:
• The students were enthusiastic and
decided to carry out mini-projects
such as the creation of the
environmental newspaper for the
diffusion of climate-related
information and its changes due to
anthropogenic interventions;
• Appealed to the involvement of more
students in reforestation activities of
several forest and mangrove species;
• Promotion of forums and debates
between schools and communities to

Follow-up actions:
Involvement of all students in the activities and discussion forums on climate change.
6. Debate on the importance of the tree to the environment
he students were divided into 4 groups so that in drawing form they could demonstrate the
importance of the trees and what can and should be done to guarantee the conservation and
protection of the trees. They are defenders of the illegal non-exploitation of wood and
uncontrolled killing of trees and forests, because the tree, according to the students, has a great
importance for the environment, as the capture of the carbon dioxide (CO2) for the
transformation of this in Oxygen which regulates life on earth and maintains the balance of
temperatures on Earth.
Held at the Primary School Matacuane a debate
that was attended by representatives of ADEL,
6th and 7th grade students and teachers in a
total of 14 men and 11 women
The main objective was the sharing of ideas
about the importance of the tree to the
environment and practical proposals for the
conservation and preservation of the
environment.
The students were aware of the importance of
the tree to the environment and there were
exercises in consolidating the ideas shared by
all.
Rua Pero de Covilha, N° 1005, Beira. Tel: 23362142; 84-3621420; www.adelsofala.org.mz
Follow-up action:
Creation of more debates in the school with more students, continuation of practical exercises.
Impact:
• Students are committed to
taking the message to their
family, friends and community
to protect the trees.
• They came to know how the
tree works for carbon capture
and oxygen transformation.
• How harmful is the unbridled
killing of trees and the illegal
exploitation of forests.

7. Cleaning day with members of the AJOMAC association.
•
Follow-up action:
Need to carry out more campaigns in other places with participation of all members as on the
beach of Independence Square.
The activity of cleaning the beach of Estoril was
carried out with the young people of the Association
‘Young of the Macúti’, in which representatives of
ADEL and Mídias were present in a total of 15
(11males, 4females) people took part in the cleaning
exercise.
Main objective of the Activity was to create
community awareness of the community living in the
neighborhoods of Macúti and Estoril, in addition to
beach users; To keep the beach clean and not to
deposit solid wastes, especially glass and metal
residues, on the beaches, which, in addition to
polluting the environment, destroy marine
ecosystems as they are dragged into the sea and spoil
the scenic beauty of the beach, making it difficult for
use by other users who wish to spend their family
afternoons on the beach, and also jeopardizing their
safety, especially of children.
Impact:
• Demonstrated young people's interest
in keeping the beach clean and healthy
environment.
• This mobilization was highly
acclaimed by the users, who
demonstrated that everything will do to
keep the beach clean.
