1 Introduction

“Say (O Muhammad saw) Can those who possess knowledge be equal to those who do not” Al Qur’an

Surah Zumar

The Prophet saw said:

“The seeking of knowledge is compulsory for every Muslim” (male and female)

Ibn-Majah

Assalamu Alaikum

Islam commands all of us both individually and collectively to seek knowledge. In the glorious era where Islam and the Muslims where trend setters for the rest of civilisation, history tells us that the sole reason for their rise was founded on a proper and sound Islamic education and upbringing.

The Deeni institutions i.e. the Masjids, Madrasahs, Darul Ulooms and Islamic Schools are the backbone of Islam. The turbulent episodes which line the pages of history also prove throughout the Islamic world, that these institutions have been the key to safeguarding Islam. Whenever and wherever the Muslims have neglected these educational establishments (breeding grounds of future Imams and leaders of the Ummah), Islam has disappeared from these places.

In order to preserve Islam and the Islamic way of life, it is imperative and of the utmost importance that we Muslims initiate, support and maintain these institutions.

The ABU BAKR TRUST by the grace of Allahswt has for the last 14 years been instrumental in the delivery of quality Islamic and contemporary education to the whole of the Muslim community.

This Introductory Report is presented to you to outline works, initiatives and needs of the Abu Bakr Trust.

Wassalaam

Muhammad LuqmanChairman, Abu Bakr Trust

2 A Brief History.............

1972 – 1980

In 1972 the property situated at 156 Wednesbury Road, Walsall, UK was purchased by a group of local brothers, for use as a Masjid and Maktab (evening classes). This was given the name “Islamic Cultural Society”. 156 Wednesbury Road was a terraced house situated in a residential area, consisting of 4 rooms on 3 floors. The local brothers frequenting the Masjid for Jumuah prayers numbered between 50 and 60. Furthermore, a class was initiated to teach local children Nazira and Hifz-e-Qur’an. (Total: 30 Students).

1980 – 1990

Another Hifz class was formed in 1981 to cater for the increased demand due to the excellent reputation the Masjid had acquired over the years. Student numbers increased to about 60. However people attending regular prayers numbered a lowly 10 – 15 and Jumuah prayer 50 – 60. It is in this period that the first graduates of the Hifz class began to emerge.

1990 – 1998

Renovation work was carried out on the premises to modernise the Masjid and classrooms. This included installation of Ablution facilities and extending the prayer Hall.

1998 – Present

Sheikh Muhammad Luqman, a local Aalim, who studied at Anjuman Isha’at-e-Islam, Dewsbury, UK , Darul ul Uloom Karachi and graduated from Nusrat ul Uloom, Gujranwala, Pakistan, was approached by the local brothers to head the activities of the Masjid. Sheikh Luqman is the former Principal of the Islamic Institute of Nottinghamshire (founder the late Sheikh Muhammad Kamal). As Principal of the aforementioned Darul Uloom for boys, Sheikh played a major role in its rise and success. However due to the school relocating to Manchester, Sheikh found it unpractical to re-locate a second time. He had previously left his home town to occupy his post in Nottinghamshire. On his return to Walsall Sheikh assembled a team of young, enthusiastic Ulamas and professionals to assist him in the major transformation that was to take place. The Islamic Cultural Society became the Abu Bakr Trust. (Named after the great Sahabi and first Caliph of Islam; Sayyidina Abu Bakr Siddiq ra.)Alhamdulillah, under the stewardship of Sheikh Muhammad Luqman, in only a couple of years the numbers of students increased from around 50 in 1999 to over 2000 in 2012. The number of people attending prayers also increased from around 75 to over 800 in the same period.

11 Executive Summary

As our respected and interested readers of this Introductory Report will have realised, that with the grace of Allah (swt) and the support of the Muslim Community, especially the Muslims of Walsall and Birmingham, the Abu Bakr Trust has been able to grow and shine within a relatively short period of time. You will no doubt agree that to start with one terraced house and then to become one of the leading if not the leading educational institution in Britain in only a few years is truly a remarkable achievement.

In 1999 when the Abu Bakr Trust was established it had around sixty students, two classes and two teachers, but since then every year student numbers as well as classes and teachers have increased by around 100%. So much so, that we now have nearly 3000 students in total and over 250 teachers (voluntary and paid) and 15 non-teaching staff.

The biggest need of the Abu Bakr Trust is financial. As you will have gathered, the sources of income do not come close to even covering the running costs let alone expansion and growth.

By far the biggest source of finance has been Interest Free Loans (Qarz-e-Hasana). These have been fundamental to the growth and expansion of the Trust; nevertheless they have to be repaid. The main reason that the Trust has been able to acquire the Interest Free Loans in excess of two and a half million pounds (£2,500,000.00) in such a short time is because contributors are assured by the management that their money will be repaid on-demand. Alhamdulillah, this has been the case for the last fifteen years. All creditors have always been repaid the amount demanded on time. This in turn has created a positive confidence in the publics’ perception.

Page 22: abubakrtrust.vpweb.co.ukabubakrtrust.vpweb.co.uk/Introductory Report - REVISED... · Web viewHazrat Ali (RA) said: “to educate a man is to educate an individual… to educate a

Just for the benefit of our readers and potential investors we would like to inform you that the support from the public can also be obtained in the form of Lillah Donations (which do not have to be repaid). Due to the popularity and good reputation of the Trust, people around the country if approached will donate. But, there are three main reasons why this route has not been taken:

Firstly, the contribution made through donations does not be significant. As you have read, the number of properties which have been bought in a very short time could not have been purchased through Lillah donations alone. For example Jamia Abu Bakr which was bought from auction in 2003 for £703,000.00, where the amount in full must be paid within 28 days, could not have been purchased if we chose to collect donations from the Muslims. Therefore the only possible route was to get large amounts of money e.g. £3K/5K etc from a smaller number of Muslims as interest free loans. (Which Alhamdulillah was the case and parents and other members of the Muslim community raised the amount in 14 days!)

The Management is not only responsible for the day to day running of the initiatives, but are also heavily involved in teaching and administration. It is for this reason that fundraising (Lillah/Sadaqaat) has taken a back seat. It is not possible to go out for fundraising purposes without having a negative effect on student learning and on the Internal progress of the Trust.

The rapid birth, growth and continual development of the Trust has always been intrinsically linked with the Senior Management Team (Sheikh Muhammad Luqman hafizahullah & Sheikh Muhammad Ramzan hafizahullah) and at the same time they are the only suitable and trustworthy candidates in the eyes of the public, to represent the Trust and promote its activities to the outside world so that they may in return contribute wholeheartedly. This dual responsibility for the Senior Management makes the situation more difficult, the structure of the Trust is such that they are needed onsite at all times. But then to get the finance needed to fund the activities e.g. buying more buildings for educational purposes, paying huge staff costs, refurbishment, conversions and maintenance etc, demands that they spend a huge amount of time outside the Trust raising funds.

So far priority has been given to student education and internal progress of the Trust, and reliance for the funds needed has been on Interest Free Loans.

The Way Forward

For present and future the picture is very clear, our honourable reader must understand that to stabilise the Trust and continue its progress, the Interest Free Loans must be repaid as soon as possible. Other sources of income and funding must be sought. We

Page 23: abubakrtrust.vpweb.co.ukabubakrtrust.vpweb.co.uk/Introductory Report - REVISED... · Web viewHazrat Ali (RA) said: “to educate a man is to educate an individual… to educate a

currently have to take more interest free loans in order to meet the demand for repayments, which takes up valuable management time, and diverts attention from student education and Internal Progress of the Trust.

Our reader must be aware that in this day and age where the Muslim Ummah is a victim of Fitna, (afflictions &trials) mischief and is subservient to its own lusts and desires; it is indeed very difficult to find brothers and sisters who have the worry and concern for the state of the Ummah as mentioned above. Yet on the other hand there is a cry all over that “we are working for the Ummah and its salvation” but practically no results are delivered which makes one wonder what all fuss is about.

But at the Abu Bakr Trust you will find it evident that words are put into action and results are delivered. For example, the Trust is running 21 different educational projects e.g. Abu Bakr Girls School, Abu Bakr Boys School, Girls College (sixth form), evening Madrasah and recently has also established Abu Bakr primary school with contemporary and Islamic scholarship courses for males and females and has nearly 3000 students with 250 staff (paid and volunteers). 190 boys and girls have succeeded in memorising the Holy Qur’an, 4 classes have graduated from the Islamic Scholarship course etc.

For this noble project we would like to put the following before the reader:

1. If you want your money to be used in the most genuine place where the work of Deen and education is taking place and the young generation (boys & girls) are securing their Imaan and the future of Islam. Then we can assure you that you will find the Abu Bakr Trust the most worthy place of your support.

2. To help the Trust maintain its progress and promote its initiatives we need respected individuals and establishments to assist us in the repayment of the Interest free loans. (Currently £3 Million approx) Obviously this will free the Senior Management from the huge burden of fundraising, and will give them even more time to focus on student learning and internal progress of the Trust.

3. In order to provide better facilities for our students and the public, we need your support to carry out the pending projects. (Purpose Built Mosque, Nanotavi Block Extension and Purchase of the remaining houses own by 4 families. This will make the Trust the owner of the whole block of houses (15 in total) which in return will be a great help for future planning and development). Currently the Trust uses a very big portable modular building to house the congregational prayers and community programmes. (see section “10 Projects Pending”)

Page 24: abubakrtrust.vpweb.co.ukabubakrtrust.vpweb.co.uk/Introductory Report - REVISED... · Web viewHazrat Ali (RA) said: “to educate a man is to educate an individual… to educate a

4. Our intentions and ambitions are to have as many Islamic Schools, Darul Ulooms, and part-time evening Maktabs as possible in order to safeguard the Imaan of our children and the Muslim Ummah. We specifically train our young scholars to take the responsibility of running an educational institution and we then endeavour to acquire suitable premises for this purpose. We would like you to express your support of this and all the other initiatives of the Abu Bakr Trust, so that when the time arrives we know that with the Help of Allah swt people like yourself will be awaiting for our invitation.

5. We request and invite respected individuals and Organisations to help the Abu Bakr Trust through generous donations and fee’sabilillah. However, if someone after fully appreciating the extent of the work the Abu Bakr Trust is doing, wants to help but finds the donations required too high, then we are also willing to accept significant long-term loans and investments with an agreed fixed monthly repayment. (e.g. 3 million over 15 years) The Trust is also willing to give its assets as a security to the loan provider (security). This will help us to consolidate our existing loans from hundreds of creditors and will give us the convenience of a single fixed monthly repayment. Currently repayment requests are so varied that they can range from £25,000.00 in one month to £150,000.00 in the next, which obviously causes serious strain on the Trusts finances.

In support of the information contained in this report, all relevant documentation and Audited Accounts can be made available upon request.

Thank you for taking the time to read this Introductory Report of the Abu Bakr Trust. We would like you to take this request seriously and if you require further information please do not hesitate to contact Sheikh Mohammad Luqman (Chairperson) on: +44 7720 384628 or +44 1922 620618. To arrange a visit for yourself or your representative please inform.
