2/3
INTRODUCTION
In todays world, technology is used in all walks of life. Use of computer systems,
internet, video and audio streaming, video conferencing and many other technologies
are utilized vastly. These technologies have also started to affect the schooling
system. Schools of the future aims to remove lock-step grouping, introduce groupdiscussions, provide time for independent study and use of mass media.
FEATURES OF SCHOOLS OF FUTURE
School of the future will no longer keep lock-step grouping for instruction. In lock-
step grouping, group of students are provided same instructions and are treated in the
same manner. Lock-step grouping does not give an even chance to every pupil in the
present day classroom to participate. In schools of the future, teacher and student
hierarchy will maintained in such a way that all students gets even chance. There will
be master teacher and teacher aides or assistants. Generally, the master teacher will
take charge of large group instructions. He will give them introduction of units ofwork, explain terms and concepts. He will provide demonstrations, summarize details
and finally test the students. This will motivate the students. Aides or assistants will
generally assist with more routine instructional activities. Student\s interaction with
the aides will enable them the opportunity to participate on all topics and issues.
Another feature of the schools of the future will be the group discussions. There will
be small group discussion with participation by no more then 12 to 15 pupil. This will
enable teachers to know their pupil more closely and intimately. They will be able to
assess their capacity and growth. This will also give opportunity to students to ask
questions, become involved. They will be able to challenge their own thoughts to
identify their validity. In current schooling systems, group discussions are rare. In
cases, where group discussion is implemented, groups are usually large. This does
gives the students to participate.
One of the main aims of the schools of the future will be to provide students the time
for independent study. The organization of instruction will be in the manner that the
students have time for independent study. Independent time will allow the individual
students to get the in depth knowledge of field of their interest. More able pupil can
do truly creative work under the supervision of their teacher.
In the schools of the future, projects will no longer referred to in terms of class workand home work. It will be the responsibility of the pupils to complete them with in the
time made available. They will be able to utilize time from school and from home for
completing the projects. Assignments will be given to pupil for independent work.
This will enable them to make choices and decision about how they will set about
solving problems and accomplishing their accepted tasks. These projects will also
give them the opportunity to innovate and be creative. More able pupils will be able to
the creative work under the guidance of their teacher.
Schools of the future will provide diversification of instruction. The will result in the
flexibility of curriculum and time deployment. The curriculum will be so ordered that
there will be the essential core for all the studies. Literacy, numeric and skills to fitphysically, mentally and morally will all be part of the studies. Wall between different

disciplines is already breaking down and this trend will continue in the schools of
future. There will be no strictly discrete subject areas. The skills of the teacher will be
greatly extended than today. They will be expected to have knowledge on all the
subjects and fields. They will be expected to demonstrate in an informed way the
benefits of interdisciplinary inquiry. The most important qualification the teacher will
then hold will be his readiness for continuous learning.
CONCLUSION / RECOMMENDATION
If all the innovative ideas and trends described above are applied to the schooling
system, school, as a self-contained institution may not exist in the future. What pupil
expects to receive on the class room can be provided to them on their homes. Mass
education via television has already started and will be increasing utilized. The
videophone will be in each household and may be used to contact teachers. Small
group discussion can be conducted in assigned location and individual assignments
can be carried out within the community. In many countries, such open universities
experiment has been put into practice and fruits are started to come out of it. BritishOpen University, Pakistans Virtual University are good examples of schools of the
future.
