Activity 2, Water Purification Manufacturing IET 120 Online Fall 2010

Purpose/ Background of the Activity

The purpose of this activity is to learn about the manufacturing process. By walking through all the steps of the activity, the members learn about the different processes are needed to produce many of the goods we use today. It helps to have a partner in this type of activity because it allows different perspectives on each step. Because of this, members can view the steps in ways they haven't thought about before.

Our group's main focus is the country of Haiti. This country's drinking water is filled with contaminants, and the citizens of Haiti are desperate for a clean water source. While the people of Haiti have very low income, if any, our company can manufacture cheap, durable water filters that can remove 99% of bacteria.

The country of Haiti is our company's main focus. With the recent hurricane, these people are in desperate need of a clean water source. Because of this, waterborne illnesses, such as typhoid and cholera are responsible for half the deaths in Haiti each year. With a population (2010) of 9,896,000, this causes concern. According to census reports, there is an average of 255 people per square kilometer, with much of this concentration living in urban areas. It should also be noted that there is an average of 4.5 people per household, most of these households live off less than $1USD per day.

Many of the citizens of Haiti are of West-African descent, and because of this, and the country's geographic location, the main language is Haitian-Creole, French with African influences. French is also recognized as one of the country's main languages, although this is not the dominant language. English is spoken throughout the country, however, this is really only spoken among the business sector of the country.

Food crops have proven to be popular amongst the country. With prices for cash crops failing, this became one of Haiti's main sources of food, with corn and beans being some of the most popular. Other food crops include: coconut, watermelon, okra, peanuts, etc.

Our group believes that distilling is the best option for water filtration, this working by bringing water to boil and capturing the steam, much like a moonshine still but without the alcohol. Not

only does this purify the water by only capturing the steam, but any bacteria that are in the water are killed by the heat by the time the water they are in is converted to steam eliminating the need for a physical filter should anyone choose they don’t want one. Another great advantage to this type of filtration is that it uses heat, not just geothermal heat, not just heat from an open flame but any heat intense enough to boil water. Because this system is so basic in nature it can be made in any size without any headache, it’s also customizable for anyone's needs, filters can be added or removed these could include activated carbon filters or filters that contain minerals that you would want in your water supply.

Part Two

Manufacturing Business Information



Company Name: PureWater Our company manufactures water-purifiers. Our water purifier is a distillery, which uses heat to eliminate bacteria and other containments in the water. The main material used in this design is mainly aluminum, metal was chosen since the heat would melt the plastic. Aluminum was chosen since it's cheaper than other considered metals, such as copper. Because we could buy large amounts of aluminum, cheaply, we will construct the whole product with it. This allows ensures that the product will be durable. Because this is the only product needed, this could be bought from metal suppliers throughout the world. This could then be shipped to our plants in Austin and Brisbane for assembly.

Overall, assembly would be relatively easy. Since our company would practice Make-To-Order manufacturing, products would be assembled according to customer's orders. Our main processes would be cutting, bending, and welding. Once the metal arrived at the plants, the metal would be cut into the required lengths, then holes would be drilled for the water outlet. Once the aluminum was cut, then it would have to be bent to form the pipes that the water would flow through. This could be done by roller-bending, which is where the aluminum would be sent through rollers, This process would be used to bend all the other parts of the product as well. The last process would be welding. Welding would be used to join the various pieces, and ensure that the product would stay together. This could be done by several workers. Once the product is assembled, it would be put onto a truck and shipped to the customer.

Locations

The plant in Austin is located right off of Lavender Loop, the actual address is 5323 Lavender Loop. There are many perks to this location, the primary one being location. The plant is 5.2 miles from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (about 10 mins), and 4.4 miles from I-35 (about 9 mins). This interstate runs north-south, and runs through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. Because of this, shipping packages shouldn't be an issue.

The overall cost of the building is $1,395,000. Because of its location, the price is higher than what was wanted. Overall though, the building has a total square footage of 8,600, however the overall lot footage is 25,483 square feet. Since the building is only 8,600 square feet, this brings the cost per square foot to $162.21. Other perks of the building include: 2 grade-level docks, 3 private offices, 3 bathrooms, 2 break rooms, and 2 reception areas.

The location in Brisbane is slightly larger with 14,434.4 square feet. The total cost is $1,595,000. This brings the total cost to about $110.5 per square foot. Overall, the building is in excellent condition, and has several perks. One perk is it has 4 roller doors, which will make shipping much easier.

The address of the building is 97 LongLands Street, East Brisbane. This puts the building in a prime spot since it's about 1.55 miles to 8-20 State Route 22. The building is also about 5.5 miles from the Pacific Motorway, which is about a 10 min drive. The international airport is about 11 miles away (about 19 mins) as well.

Demographics

Austin, Texas has proven to be a great place to start another plant. With a total population of 842,592 (50.6% males, 49.4% males) the city is large enough to ensure our company's success. Throughout the city, the diversity in the population can be seen, with 47.1% being white, 7.6% black, 36.3% Hispanic, and 6.4% Asian. Austin also has a high education rate, with 44.5% of the population having a bachelor's degree, while 16.8% have a professional degree, this could be beneficial to the company when looking for management positions, or just employees in general. Another main concern was the unemployment rate. With an unemployment rate of 4.8%, the company shouldn't have much trouble finding employees. Austin has also seen a 3.6% growth in jobs since 2012. Another main concern with placing plants was the crime rate. Austin had an overall crime index of 41.91, and a safety index of



58.09. With this, a crime index of 50 is about average, while the closer to 100 is unsafe. Because Austin is below 50, it is considered to be safer than some cities in the US. While crime, unemployment, and education rates are all important, one must look at the overall costs for employees, and their quality of life. With a population of 842,592, the overall average population per household is 2.4 people. With this, comes the overall median household income, which is $59,554. Overall, Austin has shown significant improvement in the last several years. Because of this, Austin, Texas has become one of the most top-ranked cities in the US, with titles such as: #2 in job growth, and #15 in education.

Along with Austin, the other city that is suitable for a plant is Brisbane Germany. Brisbane and Austin share many similar attributes, other than weather. With a population of 2.043 (49.3% male, 50.7 female) million, it's surprising that Brisbane has a lower crime rate than Austin. Brisbane has a crime rate of 38.60, and a safety index of 61.40. Because of such a low crime rate in both cities, we can ensure that employees will be safe, as well as company property. Brisbane is home to several universities such as, Queensland University of Technology, University of Queensland, and Griffith University. Because of this, Brisbane boasts a 23.8% education rate, with 108,347 people attending a university or tertiary institution. While Austin an average of 2.4 people per household, Brisbane has an average of 2.7. While the average people per household are larger, the average median income is also larger, with $72,176. The reason this is so much larger is because the minimum wage in Australia is about $15.30.

Overall, both cities are excellent choices for manufacturing plants, both have similar attributes, and have shown significant improvement from earlier years. Because of their attributes and growth, each city has become home to several manufacturing companies. With Rhino Precision and Solid Concepts in Austin, and Mobicon Systems and other companies in Brisbane, each city has proven useful for manufacturing. Along with growth, each city is located in a good location. Being close to the coast, this allows us to ship our products by sea, as well as by air or road.
