The Foundation must raise $50 million toward the total cost of $400 million.

We are already on our way, thanks to the

extraordinary generosity of our community.

and now the pace accelerates.

I want to thank you for allowing us into your lives throughout this past year. At Markham Stouffville Hospital, we strive to meet the health-care needs of our community members throughout their lifetimes. The staff, physicians and volunteers are thankful that they have been a part of some of the most important moments in the lives of our patients and their families. This has been another busy year at Markham Stouffville Hospital, which was originally built to serve a community of 110,000. This year, we provided care to over 300,000 community members from Markham, Stouffville, Uxbridge and surrounding areas. Despite this challenge, our Emergency Department, MRI and CT wait times were the lowest in the Central Local Health Integration Network. Due to the generosity of our community, we were able to purchase capital equipment that helps our staff help those who come to us for care. You will read more about these great investments throughout this report. There are many things to look forward to over the coming year as we continue to plan and prepare for our substantial expansion. On June 25th, Premier Dalton McGuinty visited the Hospital to announce a grant of $35.5 million to allow the Hospital to continue with the design and planning of our expansion and subsequent renovations of our current space. Renderings and pictures are now available on our website and I encourage you to take a look. Soon, you will see the back hoes arriving at the Hospital as we begin our “Enabling Works” projects – activities that we can do in advance to prepare our site for construction. We expect to have a “shovel in the ground” during 2010. This is truly an exciting time. On behalf of the Hospital, our staff, physicians and volunteers, I would like to thank you for your much-needed support. Yours Sincerely,

Janet M. BeedPresident & CEO, Markham Stouffville Hospital www.msh.on.ca

A Message from Suzette StrongP R E S I D E N T , M A R k h A M S T O u f f v I l l E h O S P I T A l f O u N D A T I O N

Even in the toughest times, you support your Hospital. That’s the lesson I learned during 2008-2009. The dramatic economic downturn caused many charities to see decreases of 20 to 25 per cent. Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation, however, reached its fundraising goals for the year.

This achievement speaks volumes for the commitment of you, our donors, who clearly make Markham Stouffville Hospital a priority. And that, in turn, reflects the wonderful care you and your families receive from the Hospital’s health-care professionals. It is truly a virtuous circle, from great care to generous giving that supports more great care. My heartfelt thanks to all of you for making the circle complete.

Our success is also a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff team and Board of Directors at the Foundation. We are focused on being a truly donor-centred, accountable organization.

During the past year, we completed the case for support for our $50 million campaign, articulating important details of the Hospital’s much-needed expansion. This is an important milestone and represents the true beginning of our ambitious fundraising journey. You’ll be hearing more in coming months.

The year 2009-2010 will be a watershed year for the Foundation and our campaign. We urgently need to raise money to leverage the government’s commitment to the expansion project. We will be turning to you and our community to raise millions of dollars.

We have a big job ahead of us. Now is the time to build the future. I know we can count on our community to rally around the Hospital. Together, we can make great things happen!

Yours Sincerely,

Suzette StrongPresident, Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundationwww.msh.on.ca/foundations/msh

Long-time supporter Terry Coughlin recently discovered just how good Markham Stouffville Hospital is.

Terry Coughlin hadn’t been treated in hospital since he had his tonsils out at the age of four. This year, a routine test sent him to Markham Stouffville Hospital for surgery and ultimately saved his life.

Terry was born on an air force base in Clinton, Ontario during World War II. After the war his mother and father moved into the real estate

development and brokerage business, and he followed in their footsteps. He and his wife, Marlene Storry, lived in the Markham area for many

years and are now settled in Thornhill. A managing partner with North American Development Group, he is currently piloting

several major developments.

The Coughlins have been supporters of Markham Stouffville Hospital since the early days. Marlene,

who grew up on a century family farm in Bloomington, served on the Hospital board for

nine years, the maximum term.

When Terry turned 65, he received a letter stating that he qualified for an aortal ultrasound, a standard screening test. His family physician, Dr. Stephen McLaren, agreed it was a good idea and the test was scheduled. As it happened, the technician, in addition to imaging his aorta, ran the ultrasound around his internal organs and noticed a suspicious bulge on one of his kidneys. Within a week, urologist, Dr. John

DiCostanzo, (see profile page 10) confirmed that Terry had a tumour. A

month after the first ultrasound, Terry went in for surgery. The operation was a success, his recovery was swift and his prognosis is excellent.

Terry has nothing but praise for everyone who treated and cared for him at Markham Stouffville Hospital. “The experience was extremely professional all the way through. The staff seemed to understand that at a time like that your mind is filled with thoughts and worries, so they went out of their way to be clear about what was being done. While I was in the Hospital, everyone who came into the room was efficient and friendly.” Best of all, says Terry, his diagnosis and treatment was quick, leaving little time for worry.

Dr. McLaren says one thing that helps ensure speedy diagnosis for people like Terry is Markham Stouffville’s advanced system for electronic data exchange with local family doctors. “If a test is

done at the hospital, or a consultant makes a note, or one of our patients visits a clinic, we can pull that data into our electronic medical records immediately. That’s not commonplace in Canada.”

Dr. DiCostanzo says Terry’s experience also reflects the hospital’s ethos. “We do everything we can to ensure that people feel they are getting the best possible care.”

Terry was so impressed by his experience that he wrote a letter of appreciation, enclosing a generous donation. He also sent the letter to the local paper.

He concluded the letter: “I can state categorically that Markham Stouffville Hospital, through its wonderfully efficient and cheerful staff and dedicated and competent doctors not only saved my life but also made my experience great!”

Dr. John DiCostanzo has been providing exceptional care at Markham Stouffville Hospital since it opened

“For its entire history this hospital has had a very unique culture – a culture that has been geared to delivering patient-focused care and making the experience great.”

That’s John DiCostanzo, a urologist at Markham Stouffville Hospital and former Chief of Surgery. He knows what he’s talking about. He joined the

Hospital in February 1990, and has been part of its development every step of the way.

John grew up in Montreal, completing his first degree at McGill University. He came to Toronto to do his MSc, and then returned to McGill for

medicine, completing his MSc alongside his demanding medical studies. He chose urology as a specialty because at the time it was one of the few

that involved microscopic surgery. “In my Masters I spent a great deal of time working under the microscope, so

I wanted to keep and use that skill. Now, of course, almost all surgery is done microscopically or endoscopically.” He completed his specialty training in Toronto hospitals and spent a year working at St. Michael’s before joining Markham Stouffville.

John and his family moved to Stouffville when he took the

position, and have been here ever since. He and his

wife, Donna, have two children. Melissa has

completed a degree

Dr. Monique Forse, President, Medical Staff Association, presents Dr. John DiCostanzo with the Bruce Brooks Award to honour his focus on patient-centred care and in appreciation of his empathy, compassion, collegiality and excellence in his field.

in journalism, and Andrea is studying nursing at Queen’s University.

The early years at the hospital weren’t always easy. “We had growing pains,” John recalls. “The community had to get used to a new group of doctors and we had trouble keeping our volumes up.” Much has changed, of course. The community has grown rapidly, and today the Hospital is bulging at the seams and planning a major expansion.

The “Make It Great” culture began, John says, when the Hospital opened. “The hospital leaders were very particular about who they hired. They interviewed all the nurses, and selected people with good reputations. The patient-focused mindset was there at the get-go, and it has been reinforced for the past 20 years. Now the challenge is to maintain it as we expand.”

Recently, John was awarded Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Bruce Brooks Award, named in honour

Page 11: REPORT TO DONORS 2 0 0 9

of the former Chief of Medicine, who died in 2005 at the age of 52. The award, voted on by his fellow physicians, has great meaning for John. “This relates not only to Bruce’s knowledge of science and medicine,” he says, “but to his humane approach to medicine. He was able to communicate with patients, to empathize with them – basically to sit on the same side of the desk with them.”

John believes that medicine has two components – the science that allows for life-saving surgeries and medical treatment and the art, which recognizes the need for compassion and empathy. “When I get a complimentary letter from a patient like Terry Coughlin (see story, page 6), it tells me that I’ve done what I have been inherently trained to do, not only as a physician but also as a person. My schooling taught me the science part of medicine; my background taught me the humane part.”

The Pakistani community makes a $500,000 commitment to the hospital’s expansion

“Whatever I have today, I have because of Canada. This is the best country in the world. There is nothing to stop you, if you have the right attitude – the attitude to make a difference.”

Khalid Usman certainly has the attitude to make a difference. He arrived in Canada from Pakistan with nothing but $50 and a newly-minted university degree in his pocket. He became a Chartered Accountant and has run his own accounting firm in Markham since 1985. Khalid has also been a town

councillor, a corporate director and a volunteer leader of extraordinary commitment and impact. Among his many contributions, he spearheaded a

campaign to educate the local community about Islam after 9/11, served as a member of the Race Relations Committee for Markham, helped raise money to build a cancer hospital in Lahore and raised more than $1 million to help

those affected by the recent earthquake in Pakistan.

Khalid served as a member of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Board from 2004 to 2006,

and joined the Board of the Foundation in 2007. For him, the Hospital has warm

associations – two of his three daughters and his granddaughter were born

here. “It’s a very special hospital with a homey feeling,” he says. “The professional staff and leadership are very dedicated. It has done a wonderful job serving our communities, and now it is in expansion mode.”

Khalid is also impressed by how open and responsive the Hospital is

to its diverse communities. For example, the Hospital is now providing Halal food for Muslim

patients and Muslim women can choose to be cared for by female doctors and nurses.

As Chair of the Canadians of Pakistani Origin organization, Khalid made a pledge of $500,000 toward the campaign for expansion. A gala dinner in honour of Pakistan National Day in March 2009 raised close to $300,000. A plaque honouring the contributions of Canadians of Pakistani Origin will be mounted in the Diagnostic Imaging Centre in the Hospital.

“When I talk to the Pakistani and Muslim communities about Markham Stouffville Hospital, it’s so easy to raise the money,” says Khalid. “We all know how lucky we are to have this Hospital, so everyone is happy to give. We hope other communities will feel the same way and match our commitment!”

Janet Beed, Hospital CEO, accepts a cheque from Canadians of Pakistani Origin, joined by Mayor Frank Scarpitti, members of the Hospital Board, and representatives of the Pakistani community.
