Around noon the head media guy held an impromptu meeting about the Internet problems Hetold us the Internet would be up in five (it never was) and then announced that as of 6 pmon Thursday Camp Bisco X was officially sold out at 22000 We all cheered

Some kid wearing a bright green shirtand suspenders w ith unregular curly hairpoking out from under a backwardsbaseball cap strolled into the tent Hewould later become one of my bestfriends at the festival introducing me toJon Gutw illig and the bassist of Lettuceand starting my friendship w ith ZebblerHe texted me this photo he took frombackstage and got us into any part ofthe festival we wanted Wearing thesame shirt and suspenders for threedays straight he exists in mine and myattorneyrsquos phones only as ldquoDex MothaFuckin Terrdquo of UNRegular Radio

ldquoWHATrsquoS UPPPPEVERYBODYrdquo he says as he enters the

media tent as a Joker-like smile spreadsacross his face

In a flash he sw ivels to face me ldquoYoursquore coolrdquo He says pointing at me then plops into a chairw ith his boys and starts rolling a j The rest of the media people stare at him w ith disbelief as Ilaugh loudly interrupted by a text from my iPhone

ldquoHi Lauren This is Anne Cole Would you still like to interview the bassist of the Easy Star All-Stars I can set it up before their showrdquo

ldquoYESrdquo I scream as everyone in themedia tent looks at me like I just keep

confirming how nuts I amThe Easy Stars are on at 215 and itrsquos around 1230 now so that gives me a good amount oftime to think of the best things to ask them Unfortunately the interview is right now

ldquoAHHHHHrdquo I unleash a blood-curdlingscream

I didnt have anything prepared but I figured Id take on the attitude Ive had the entire festivaland w ing it assuming it would work out for the best

When Ras I Ray walked jovially into the media tentw ith sunglasses and the hat he later called hisldquocrownrdquo I knew it was going to be great I gave himthe biggest hug and told him how much fun I had athis show You can read the interview here but Rayhad a lot of insight and was laughing the whole time

He said all he wants is for his music to move thecrowd to make them want to dance and foreveryone to ldquofeel the loverdquomdashthat dynamic of sharedbliss I was talking about earlier how everyone atfestivals is so happy to be here that we all get along

Ray on w inging jam seshes on stage ldquoYou knowwhere you just POOF and it just happens nothingpredictedrdquo Ray explained ldquoAnd I love it I love thespontaneity it makes things freshrdquo

After telling him how I loved the Easy Stars and had a blast when I saw them play theirBeatles tribute album two years ago in Philly Rays response let me in on the reason he lovesplaying music

ldquoTo hear that coming from you that makes it all worthwhilerdquo he says leaning closer andpointing at me w ith an earnest expression on his face

ldquoThey donrsquot have to pay me to do thisbecause I love itrdquo

An hour later I demand to know why the Internet is still not working before grabbing myattorney and sprinting to the huge field in front of Main Stage A for the Easy Star set at 215

Everyone is dancing and ldquofeeling the loverdquo that the Easy Stars are spreading like w ildfiremdashawildfire caused by a joint dropped in the grass The merriment is contagious I hear joyfulexclamations when they cover ldquoTimerdquo by Pink Floyd (how cool is it that Easy Stars AND PrettyLights manage to take the same song and do two polar opposite things w ith it both equallygood)

We all bounce and sway and the smell of dankness fills the air as the Easy Stars flowseamlessly from ldquoSergeant Pepperrsquos Lonely Hearts Dub Bandrdquo into ldquoI Get By w ith a Little HelpFrom My Friendsrdquo surely an anthem of Camp Bisco X Wersquore all so exhausted from Day I that alaid back reggae show is just what we need

As Das Racist brings Brooklyn beats toupstate New York and pumps up thecrowd more off his feet than on themturning us into a mass of jumping hip-hoppers I almost lose my shit when akid walks by wearing a chicken head Ispin around and a full chicken is walkingtowards me Perplexed all I can do isembrace him

To everyonersquos disappointment (if anyshred of disappointment can possiblyexist at Camp Bisco X) Red Man is MIAbut the drummer of Break Scienceseriously destroys their set as he fuelsRJD2rsquos sinister space ship synth

ldquoEverybody keep your hands up thererdquo the synth player of Break Science shouts and raiseshis free hand pumping it up and down w ith us to the sick beats I understand why they callthem ldquoBreak Sciencerdquo because their percussive talent defies all physical laws

One of the best parts of their show is when RJD2 thanks the guys of Break Science for theirawesome beats to which the live drummer responds

ldquoYo thatrsquos a legend right there you all saythanks to RJD2rdquo The crowd cheers

Shpongle Live was my favorite show at Camp Bisco X it was pretty unbelievable The onlything I could think of from the moment they took the stage at 715 was how the hell are theyDOING that

Photo by Zebbler of the Zebbler Encanti Experience

The show was a total sensory experience an expansive performance complete w ith celloviolin laptop synths dancers male and female vocals and spoken bits acrobats in yellow andblack checkered pants and masks outrageous costumes lights all mixed together hellip thegroup hits all the senses in all the right spots Multi-layered sounds multi-dimensional feelShpongle Live is a melting pot of musical genres from all influences

Together the talented Simon Posford(dazzling us w ith his expertise as heplayed the guitar two synths and hislaptop all at the same time w ith ease)accompanied for the first time in theUS w ith his partner in crime Mad-hatted Raja Ram (dancing animatedlywhiled playing his flute like a mysticalminstrel or court jester) as well as JoeRusso (drums) Pete Callard (guitar)Harry Escott in his glittering silver shirt(cello) Janey Choi in a zebra-stripeddress (violin) Jonathan Shaw (bass)the two enchanting vocalists AbigailGordon and Michele Adamson andspecial guest Encanti (on stage behindthe mixing board) orchestrate asymphony of magical psychedelic

sounds and classical and jazz instruments The music has a downtempo chill out flow but isso layered that as jammy as it is it carries a surreal power It doesnrsquot matter how far you arefrom the stage because Shponglersquos music is so all-encompassing that it fills the sky (Photo byZebbler of the Zebbler Encanti Experience)

I was elated becoming a dancing gypsy during my favorite song of the set as my handsfloated to a cacophony of sirensrsquo voices Middle Eastern guitar riffs trippy synth sounds drivenby light-speed drum rolls between a deep steady beat catapulting us into another dimensionof sound

Out in the crowd beach balls bounced around blow-up turtles on sticks and balloons floatedlazily before being propelled back up by smacking hands Raja Ram entertained us all w ith hisalien instruments running around the set and making ridiculous faces while mouthing some ofthe weirder sounds and sharing the stage w ith a huge contorting rainbow slinky

When the set ended I had no idea what just happened but knew that performance was goingto be nearly impossible to beat I squelched into the artist lounge soaking wet w ith thatexhilarating feeling you get after one of the best shows yoursquove ever seen even running intomy friend Brian as we released our excited comments about the show

Page 3: REPORTING LIVE: CAMP BISCO X DAY II | DigBoston€¦ · Easy Star All-Stars -- Karma Police (feat. Citizen Cope) by superlucy-oficial As Das Racist brings Brooklyn beats to upstate

When Ras I Ray walked jovially into the media tentw ith sunglasses and the hat he later called hisldquocrownrdquo I knew it was going to be great I gave himthe biggest hug and told him how much fun I had athis show You can read the interview here but Rayhad a lot of insight and was laughing the whole time

ldquoTo hear that coming from you that makes it all worthwhilerdquo he says leaning closer andpointing at me w ith an earnest expression on his face

ldquoThey donrsquot have to pay me to do thisbecause I love itrdquo

Together the talented Simon Posford(dazzling us w ith his expertise as heplayed the guitar two synths and hislaptop all at the same time w ith ease)accompanied for the first time in theUS w ith his partner in crime Mad-hatted Raja Ram (dancing animatedlywhiled playing his flute like a mysticalminstrel or court jester) as well as JoeRusso (drums) Pete Callard (guitar)Harry Escott in his glittering silver shirt(cello) Janey Choi in a zebra-stripeddress (violin) Jonathan Shaw (bass)the two enchanting vocalists AbigailGordon and Michele Adamson andspecial guest Encanti (on stage behindthe mixing board) orchestrate asymphony of magical psychedelic

sounds and classical and jazz instruments The music has a downtempo chill out flow but isso layered that as jammy as it is it carries a surreal power It doesnrsquot matter how far you arefrom the stage because Shponglersquos music is so all-encompassing that it fills the sky (Photo byZebbler of the Zebbler Encanti Experience)

instruments controlling the weather As the music filled all of Camp Bisco like the dense smokerising and floating out over the crowda storm gathered above us andShpongle Live brought rain The scenewas gorgeous a subtler-than-usuallight display soft blues lime greensand hot pinks reflected off the raindrops and twenty minutes into the setI realized it was pouring but it didnrsquotmatter the rain was absorbed into thesquishy muddy field w ithout disturbingthe music Plus the lightning theygenerated created a natural light showthat transcended the stage

Opening the show w ith ldquoDivine Momentof Truthrdquo the band also played I AmYou and ldquoAround the World in a TeaDazerdquo w ith Ram playing spacey flittingflute that match echoing vocals and smooth dances undercut w ith darker violin lines Rossbrought us all together w ith his deep steady beats as we swayed in unison

The rest of the time I hung out w ith DexZebbler and Encanti doing silly things andtalking to them about how the ZebblerEncanti Experience has been touring w ithShpongle Live Theyrsquore heading to Canadanow (OH CANADA) but Zebbler couldnrsquotget his passport in time so Encantirsquos goingto fly solo for this onemdashbut Zebbler isexcited to meet back up w ith the band on

Shpongle Live we shall meet again at the music festival that puts all others to shame BurningMan (fellow performers include EOTO Infected Mushroom Random Rab and the ZebblerEncanti Experience)
