GEORGIAN BAY WATER LEVEL CONCERNS The steadily increasing water levels in the past two years have become a major concern to the members of this association, especially those who own shore line properties and are experiencing the erosion first hand. Many are seeing the loss of property, including the destruction of docks, piers and boat houses as well as impacts on water and sewer systems. The purpose of this article is to provide you with website information with relevant current data and what the future might hold. Options for feedback to relevant organizations are provided. Your feedback might be helpful in making the appropriate agencies aware of your particular situation, concerns and opinion. From a month ago the water levels on Lakes Michigan and Huron are up 4 inches and from this time last year they are up 15 inches. By May/June this year the level is expected to increase another 4 inches. The Georgian Bay Association says "potentially record high water levels are expected to persist for at least the next six months, so flood prone areas are expected to remain vulnerable." In their 2012 Upper Great Lakes Study, the International Joint Commission determined that there are three main

drivers impacting long term water levels in Georgian Bay and Lakes Michigan and Huron: (1) climate changes; (2)

previous dredging and unexpected erosion in the St. Clair River; and (3) glacial isostatic rebound.

OPTIONS: 1. If anyone would like to become involved in advocating for better management of the Great Lakes water levels the following link to the Georgian Bay Great Lakes Foundation provides an excellent opportunity to join and support a relevant organization. It believes the Long Lac and Ogoki water diversions have significantly aggravated the water level situation (in addition to those 3 drivers above) - the diversions were undertaken in 1940 to increase Canada’s electricity supply during World War II. Water was diverted from the Hudson Bay watershed into the Lake Superior basin, increasing the power of the flow through the St. Marys River. For more information: Georgian Bay Great Lakes Foundation. Are these diversions still required?

2. You are also invited to relate your experiences and submit your opinions to the International Joint Commission

(IJC) by completing this Questionnaire. The IJC governs the management of the Great Lakes for both the Ameri-

can and Canadian governments.

This graph is from the U.S.

Corps of Engineers and is

based on the

scientific data they

collected. It provides a

water level forecast up to

September 2020.

You will get a chance to win prizes online, be interviewed by our panelists about mental health, ride your bike or walk in the comfort of your own home.” Want to help? If you’re already registered for Ride Don’t Hide Grey Bruce you’ve been converted to a virtual registration! Just a few questions to complete this: 1. Let them know if you want to ride outside, ride inside or ride in spirit! Or 2. Let them know what you’d like done with your registration fee.

“As we face an unprecedented physical health crisis due to COVID-19, we are also facing an unprecedented mental health crisis. Businesses are shutting down, offices are closing, people are working from home and others have lost their jobs. We are being asked to self-isolate when social connection and belonging are core to good mental health. Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually raises essential funds for core services and critical programs that work to keep people out of crisis and support people of all ages with the mental health help they need, when they need it, wherever we are. We can’t be together, but in Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually, no one rides alone. We may be at home, but together we’re a movement for mental health.”

LOCALS LAUNCH COVID-19 FRONTLINE SUPPORT INITIATIVE

As a member of your local ratepayers' board, and the wider Grey Bruce community, I’m excited to announce a new initiative supporting our frontline and local businesses in this challenging time. Working with neighbours in Owen Sound, our group is looking to help community healthcare workers and local independent restaurants by organizing prepared meal deliveries to staff at hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home care - at NO COST to those essential workers. Donations will help provide nutritious, FREE meals for nurses and doctors, paramedics, PSWs, aides, and other frontline healthcare workers in our area. We will be providing oven-safe packaging to independent restaurants and purchasing prepared meals from them. Local restaurants are not expected to donate their time or supplies, this is about local support - and part of that means ensuring our small businesses get back on their feet as well. Our volunteers will then coordinate deliveries of the refrigerated meals to local hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home care organizations. Frontline healthcare workers will be invited to have these meals for their lunch or take them home for their next meal. Please click through for more info! If you are not able to support with a donation at this time we get it, we would really appreciate a share instead! Fuelling the Frontline DONATE HERE! - Nicole Egan Note: This is a local initiative, however many of our seasonal members live across the province and USA and could also look for similar programs in their area to support.

LOCAL NEWS

1. A local food delivery service, Persephone Market Garden, will be offering their own fresh vegetables mid-June. Read about it here:

Folks can sign up for the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programme or for their Farm Stand at Persephone Market Garden. The CSA runs weekly from June 19 to the end of October:

• people can choose all 20 weeks or just 10 (called "every other week" but you can pick the weeks you would like to receive a share)

• there are three size options = small, medium or large

• after signing up, members can set their preferences for all the vegetables Persephone grows

• each week, the programme assigns vegetables based on availability and member preference. So, if a member does not want kohlrabi, they do not get kohlrabi!

• in addition, members have a time period each week in which they can further customize their share and order extras (as available).

In addition to the CSA, there is the Farm Stand:

• people sign up on the Persephone website

• when Persephone has extra vegetables available, you receive an email and can then choose what vegetables you would like to get.

For both options, delivery is on Friday afternoons. 2. The Big Bay Ice Cream Wagon is setting up at the Great Canadian Retail Outlet in Owen Sound. 3. The Balmy Beach Convenience Store now has a LCBO Convenience Outlet with a wide selection of
