Specific representation can be defined by these questions:

• What idea is being represented?• How is it represented, within genre?• How is the representation made to seem

natural or real? • Who is the representation targeted at?

How do you know?

Propp • He also concluded that all the characters could be resolved into 8 broad character

types in the 100 tales he analyzed:• The villain — struggles against the hero. • The donor — prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object. • The (magical) helper — helps the hero in the quest. • The princess or prize — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to

marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. the hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.

• her father- gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished.

• The dispatcher- character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off. • The hero or victim/seeker hero- reacts to the donor, weds the princess. • False hero- takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.

The hypodermic needle this theory was the first attempt to explain how mass audiences might react to mass media.

The Payne Fund studies of the 1930s, which focused on the impact of motion pictures on children, and Hitler's manipulation of the mass media during WWII to unify the German public behind the Nazi party.

Schemas: is a packet of information that is derived from past experiences.

Therefore when the audience sees a trailer they will look at characters and Identify them with already known stereotypes and immediately judge that person to determine their personality.

Connotation-The set of associations or meanings implied by a word or action in addition to its literal meaning

Denotation-The most specific or direct meaning of a word

Denotes a red flower

Connotes a symbol of honour for the soldiers who died in WW1

This is used in films when trying to portray an event in a subtle way, it is also used in comedies to mock situations or iconic characters, such as Hitler.
