Gender (Males)

Our genre is Crime and Thriller and therefore there are more male characters than females because males are portrayed as strong, independent, powerful, brave etc. They are usually expected to be the hero of the movie and save females from danger and are over protective. Crime is full of violence and fighting and because of this males are the perfect role as they are masculine. When two characters are fighting, you are able to see who is more dominant. In Crime films, you don’t see many males and females fighting with each other because there is a high chance males would win as they have more experience and skills. For example in Fast and Furious 7 there are 7 male characters and 2 female characters which shows who is more dominant. Male characters are carrying more weapons such as; guns, grenades, knife etc while female characters are not carrying that many weapons which implies males are more powerful and are able to use the weapons properly.

Gender (Females)

On the other hand, females are portrayed as weak, vulnerable, emotional etc. Female characters would usually be the one who interferes with the plan because they might be in danger and because of this the male character would need to save the female character which leads to a lot of problems. Females are portrayed as less important in crime movies because they are usually shown in movies because of their body. They are also portrayed as charming and beautiful because of their costume and make up. For example, in Fast and Furious 7 Roman was starring at a females body because she looked attractive this is a “male gaze.”

Target Audience

Crime films are targeted to teenage boys because they enjoy films which include fighting, violence, danger etc. However, not many females would be interested in crime films as they are not a huge fan of movies that include violence, but like films that are funny, romantic, etc.

Place

Place is important because it tells the audience where the film is being set, and it also gives an idea of what genre the movie is. For example, in Fast and Furious 5 the establishing shot was a city which connotes there is going to be a lot of crimes as it’s very busy and there are a lot of people. This tells the audience the city plays an important part in the film as there are many banks which indicates they might rob a bank which creates suspense and excitement.
