How do we represent the Earth?

We can use: A globe
A map

When we represent the Earth on a flat map, the areas are distorted.

When we represent the Earth on a flat map, the distances are also distorted.

Physical or relief maps. They illustrate the mountains, rivers and lakes of an area. The water is usually shown in blue. Colors are used to show relief (differences in land elevations). Green is typically used at lower elevations, and orange or brown indicate higher elevations.

Economic or resource maps. Economic or resource maps. They show info about natural resources or economic activities.

Climate maps. They give information about the climate and precipitation (rain and snow) of a region.
Road maps. They show major highways, roads, airports, railroad tracks, cities and other points of interest in an area. People use road maps to plan trips.

A scale says exactly how much distance is represented by 1 cm, in this case, 8 km.
Scales are very useful for calculating distances.

Parallels or lines of latitudeThey are imaginary horizontal lines. They go from east to west and help measure the distance from the Equator in degrees north or south. The Equator is at 0° latitude.
