The ArtistInitially the artist has been presented as an aggressive character. This is achieved through the close up photo and the gnawing expression. This sort of expression presents images of a flesh hungry animal. To add to this, the glowing light on hisface makes it look like he is angry andcreates a shadowing effect, making him look more menacing.

The artist is also presented as being trendy by the way he poses and the clothes he wears.

He shows confidence in his poses and by wearing Nike and through the use of accessories he shows that he is a man who considers his image and look.

The images on the following slide support this…

The language used by the artist show that he is prepared to stand out and possibly break rules.

He is prepared to use language some might consider unacceptable which highlights his confidence and self belief that he is a music star.

The MagazineThe magazine itself also presents different social groups for instance age, gender, race and those with a particular interest.

Page 7: Representation Power Point

AgeI believe the magazine is presented as being a fairly young magazine. This is because the majority of people that would buy this magazine would be maybe 25 and under. Furthermore the artists pictured are young so this adds to its appeal. However, on the other side, the slightly retro feel to the magazine and the inclusion of older artists such as The Beastie Boys should also make the magazine appeal to older customers aged between 30 and 40 who would have been teenagers at the time of that music.

GenderThe magazine represents males in a more powerful light. One reason for this is because there are no female artists within the magazine. This continues the stereotype that males are more dominant and have the capability to make more money. Although modern music shows that this is not true, in the late 80s and 90s hip hop scene this was very much the case.

RaceI would say the magazine is represented as being more aimed at black readers in the UK or in the US. This is because of the stereotype that hip-hop music is most popular with black individuals. This is potentially due to the genre originating out of US states such as Compton from black artists and groups, some of which included in my magazine (Grandmaster Flash, NWA).Furthermore, there are no white artists pictured in my music magazine.

InterestsAnother important social group that my magazine needs to be able to represent is those people who enjoy hip-hop music. Although this is less specific than the previous social groups, it can be achieved simply through the music within the magazine and also other factors such as fashion and use of language. For instance, my magazine would not represent rockers, goths or classical people simply because of the motifs in the magazine.
