REPRESENTATIONS OF AGE IN BRITISH AND AMERICAN TV DRAMA’S

Page 2: Representations of 7 12 year olds

BOBBY BEALE

In the TV soap drama Eastenders, Bobby Beale is a 11 year old boy. Bobby wears dorky clothes that make him look innocent however his character is actually quite spiteful and mischievous. This represents 11 years old as being nasty when that isn’t always the case. His clothes represents him as being geeky which sets the image that 11 year olds are nerdy.

In this photo we can see Bobby wearing a school uniform this represents him as vulnerable and makes the audience realise that he is only young. This could then make the audience like Bobby.

CHARLIE- HOLLYOAKS

In this photo Charlie appears to be about eight or nine. We can see in this photo that he is clearly upset, shown through the tears. This represents young children as emotional, we don’t know why he is upset but we can assume its over something petty. This represent young children as irrational and over dramatic.

Here we can see Charlie having fun and smiling. This represents young people as happy and playful.

SIMON- CORONATION STREET

In this picture Simon appears to be about ten or eleven. We can se that in this picture Simon is shouting, this represents young children as moody and angry which we know isn’t always the case.

In this picture we can see simon looking unhappy about something, we can see this though the way he has his arms crossed. He looks very moody about something, we don’t know what has made him like this but it could be that he hasn’t got his own way. This is a common stereotype amongst ten year olds which is how old Simon looks in this picture.
