Company continues to be a
family venture as Champion Oil
celebrates 60 years in business.
Founder Ralph Lowe was raised in
a German farm family. While he
wanted nothing to do with farm-
ing, ultimately that was what
helped lay the foundation for his
new business. Ralph moved from
Iowa to Clinton, MO where he
bought 100 acres. There he was
able to raise cattle and hogs to
supplement his income and start
Lowe Oil in 1956.
Son David remembers in the
beginning his dad had the family
station wagon and a two-
wheeled trailer. He would travel
as far south as necessary in the
evening, sleep in the car and
then drive his way back north the
next morning making his deliver-
ies. David and his brothers have
always been a part of the busi-
ness, stamping the lids of cans
when they got home from school.
It was in these earlier years
that Milestone co-owner Michelle
recalls her grandfather doing
business with Lowe Oil. He was
the supervisor for Henry County,
which includes Clinton, and he
bought road oil from Lowe Oil.
In 1998, David’s brothers re-
tired and sold their interest in the
company to David and a silent
partner, and it then became
what is known as Champion
Brands. Today there is a third gen-
eration, David’s son Matt, working
in the business that has grown to
be a globally recognized industry
leader in specialty lubricants,
chemical and brake fluids.
