Jesus is always moving, inviting his disciples and us to follow. Mark wants those who hear and read his Gospel to come to understand Jesus and recognize him as the Son of God. In today’s passage Jesus moves quickly through a growing crowd rebuking those who misunderstand his power, warning those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit and redefining their understanding of family. The matter in question is Jesus’ authority as the scribes accuse him of using demonic power to cast out demons. Jesus replies in parables based on one principal: a power that battles against itself is bound to collapse. By implication Satan’s kingdom is still operative, so Jesus’ power must have another source. In the saying, ”No one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man”. Satan is the strong home owner who has been bound and whose property is being plun- dered by Jesus, whose exorcisms demonstrate the over- throw of Satan’s power. The saying about the forgiveness of sins reverts to the issue of Jesus’ authority: all sins are forgivable, except blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. It is a denial of Jesus’ power in his exorcisms, so the implica- tion is that Jesus expels demons by the power of the Holy Spirit. Refusal to accept this is the unforgivable sin. To the news of the arrival of his family, Jesus responds by show- ing that not family ties but doing God’s will is decisive in the Kingdom.

WEEK X OF ORDINARY TIME

REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

A s we return to the Sunday’s of Ordinary Time we re-sume our reading from the Gospel of St. Mark who

wrote his Gospel as a dramatic story with Jesus at the cen-ter. Satan is the strong home owner who has been bound and whose property is being plun-dered by Jesus, whose exorcisms demonstrate the over-throw of Satan’s power. The saying about the forgiveness of sins reverts to the issue of Jesus’ authority: all sins are forgivable, except blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. It is a denial of Jesus’ power in his exorcisms, so the implica-tion is that Jesus expels demons by the power of the Holy Spirit. Refusal to accept this is the unforgivable sin. To the news of the arrival of his family, Jesus responds by show-ing that not family ties but doing God’s will is decisive in the Kingdom.

THIS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13th we will celebrate the Feast of St. Anthony at the 8:30 AM Mass. We will pray the Litany of St. Anthony and Bless and distribute bread

Unfailing Prayer to Saint Anthony Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore of you to obtain

for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle. Even so, you are the Saint of Miracles.

Most images of St. Anthony depict him holding the Child Jesus and with lilies. It is a part of tradition in Christian art to use lilies as a sym-bol of purity when portraying Our Lady or the Saints and even An-gels. With Saint Anthony lilies have special significance. Lilies are in bloom around much of the world in the month of June. Of even more im-portance there are two incidents hundreds of years old relating to the Saint of Padua and these magnificent flowers. In 1680, on June 13, in the church at Mentosca d'Agesco in Austria,

someone placed a cut lily in the hand of his statue. For an entire year the lily remained fragrant and fully alive, without wilting. Then the following year it grew two more blooms, so that the church was filled with the fragrance of the flowers. A little over a century later, during the anti-clerical, anti-Catholic French Revolution, on the island of Corsica, the Franciscans were forced to leave their parishioners. The people refused to give up their devotions although they had no choice in the matter of the Sacraments because they had no priests. They invoked the intercession of St. Anthony. On June 13 they erected a shrine to the Saint in the de-serted church; the shrine included lilies in his honor. Months later the blooms were still fresh as if they had just been placed there.

ST. ANTHONY BREAD is a term used for offerings made in thanksgiving to God for blessings received through the prayers of St. Anthony. It is used to support the poor. Louise Bouffier, a woman greatly devoted to St. Anthony, seems to be the one who started this prac-tice. She had a small shop in Toulon, France. One morning she found it impossible to open the shop door. Since the safety lock seemed broken she called locksmith and he couldn’t open it and gave up in despair saying the only thing to do was to break open the door. While he went after other tools Bouffier prayed fervently to St. Anthony that the door might be opened without force. She prom-ised, if her request be granted, to distribute loaves of bread to the poor in his honor. She then begged the locksmith to make another effort with his keys. As soon as he did the door came open without the slightest difficulty. As a result of this and other favors granted through the help of St. Anthony his clients increased so rapidly that Bouffier, together with her friends founded the work of charity called “St. Anthony Bread”.
