The primarily requirements are

given by the application* Pipes and fittings for hot and cold water supply (inside buildings) is covered by ISO DIS 15874

* Semi finished products for industrial applications is covered

by ISO DIS 15 493 and -494

General requirements for pressure systems

* Semi finished products for industrial applications

* Pipes and fittings for hot and cold water supply (inside buildings)

- drinking water approval of the recipe (FDA, NSF)

- organoleptics (odor, taste)

- high resistance to internal pressure at elevated temperatures

- life time of the system > 50 years at 60/70C and 10 bar pressure

- weldability

- chemical resistance

- certification and registration of the Piping-system

- governmental registration (DIBt, DVGW, WRc, DWI etc.)

* Corrugated and solid pipes for conduit / sewage/ drainage

(Inside and outside buildings)

- good correlation of stiffness and toughness

- life time > 50 years at max. 40C

- weldability

- chemical resistance

- governmental registration (DIBt, DVGW, WRc, DWI etc.)

Only coloured materials for pressure applications are allowed- PP natural + colour master batch = new material = new tests

- Basell is not responsible for such a material

What are the necessary tests and approvals you

have to do, if you want to be in pipe business

1 Creep rupture curvesThe new material (change in polymerisation and compounding plant) has to be tested according to

ISO TR 9080. That means that about 100 pipe samples have to be tested at different temperatures

and pressure levels by an external test laboratory.

Time for testing:more than 1 Year

Costs for testing:about 100 TDM for every colourOnly with these test results the market can be entered.

Note

From every production lot two control points of the creep rupture curves are checked in internal

pressure tests.

Necessary equipement: pipe extrusion line for PP (pipe diameter e.g. 32 mm) / testing equipment

for internal pressure testing at least at 95 and 120C.critical:experience of lab staff

2 ProcessibilityThe PP is quite critical in creating rough surface.

The surface quality of the pipes with high speed extrusion has to be tested.

Necessary equipment:Pipe extrusion line with output of > 200kg/h

3 OrganolepticsOdor and taste level of granules and pipes has to be tested according to the international

standards. Test has to be done in production control lab, because the odor level is certified

on a lot by lot base on the certificate of analysis.

Critical:training of the lab staff

Four times a year the organoleptic test is done by an external institute.

4 Impact resistance of the pipesTest according to ISO 9854. The specimen are cut from the pipe and tested at 23 and 0C.

Necessary equipment::- Pipe extrusion line with at least 2 different sets of dies to produce pipes

with different outer diameters - Test equipment to do the impact test at lower temperature.

5 Choice of pigments and dispersionThe choice of pigments is critical. There can be a detrimental drop in the hydrostatic pressure

resistance.

The dispersion of the pigments has to be inspected by optical microscopy. No agglomerates of

pigments are allowed.

6 Physical propertiesDue to the fact, that the life/service time or piping systems are usually more that 1 year, the raw

material supplyer should have product informations about the

- weldability (determination of short and long term welding factors / also in connection

with other PP-grades)

- short and long term creep properties at different temperatures

- change in mechanical properties as a function of temperature

- aging

- chemical resistance (minimum tests with 3 different chemicals according ISO 4433)

Time for testing:more than 1 year

NoteTests should be done parallel on external testing institutes to show independent test results.

7 Technical serviceThe introduction of the material needs a high level of technical support, regarding processing and

design of the fittings and injection moulding tools and approvals by local authorities.

Regulations for drinking water contact in the different countries have to be fulfilled.
