CENTRE DESCRIPTION

MISSIONCRBR is a multi-faculty research centre that seeks to advance knowledge in human and animal reproduction, develop and transfer reproductive technologies, and examine the impact of these technologies on society. CRBR strives for excellence in student training and the responsible conduct of research.

CRBR is a dedicated team of researchers from the Department of Animal Sciences and the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproduction at Université Laval.

Created in 1995, CRBR brings together researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, research professionals, and technicians who carry out their work in the Department of Animal Sciences’ integrative physiology laboratory, the laboratories of the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF), and the laboratories of the CHU de Québec research centre.

CRBR’s scientific program is underpinned by an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to investigating the transgenerational factors involved in producing embryos capable of developing into healthy offspring.

The research centre’s areas of expertise include gamete production, fertilization, embryonic development, and maternal-fetal interactions during pregnancy.

At the 38th Annual Conference of the American Society of Andrology (ASA) in April 2013, Jacques J. Tremblay, director of CRBR’s Laboratory of Molecular Regulation of Gonadal Steroidogenesis and professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproduc-tion, received the prestigious Young Andrologist Award, which recognizes ASA members under the age of 45 who have made significant contributions to the field of andrology.

Student training is a cornerstone of CRBR’s scienti-fic program. Collaborative projects among research teams give students unique access to a broad range of knowledge, expertise, and equipment. CRBR’s scientific program enjoys an excellent international reputation and its faculty members regularly offer specialized courses on reproduction. In addition to talks by CRBR members, students also have the opportunity to hear and dialogue with prominent guest lecturers every year.

CRBR has established a number of partnerships with industry and government, making it possible for students to carry out their research in industrial settings—primarily through BMP Innovation’s research scholarship program. Students are exposed to the realities of industrial R&D and have an opportunity to establish professional relationships and foster future employment opportunities.

Another way CRBR supports student training is through scholarships ($2,500) and travel grants ($500) to encou-rage student participation in national and international scientific conferences. Several CRBR students have won awards for their conference presentations. The majority of CRBR members also belong to Réseau québécois en

reproduction (RQR), a strategic network supported by Fonds québécois de la recherche – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) whose members include most scientists active in reproductive biology in Quebec. Through the network, RQR members enjoy access to scientific expertise and specialized equipment. Collaboration with researchers and students from other universities and research centres is strongly encouraged. The RQR strategic network also receives funding through the CREATE Program administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), which promotes recruitment, financial support, and graduate and postdoctoral training. Several CRBR members are also members of the pan-Canadian EmbryoGENE strategic network supported by NSERC and various industry and government partners.
