What is research data?
Any Information you use in your research

Research data
What is research
Data?
Observational
Experimental
simulation
Derived /compiled
Captured real –time eg. Survey data, sensor data
From lab experiments eg. Gene sequences
From test models eg. Climate models
Eg. Data mining

Why should I care?
• Huge amount of data due to higher computing
power
• How would you manage /store research data once
the grant runs out?
• Data is fragile and easy to lose
• Storage media is fragile
• Can be hard to find
• Software used to generate/access data may
become defunct in future
![Page 6: Research Data Overview](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051817/547b605c5806b5f93f8b45f5/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Research Data Management
• Process for collecting, organizing, archiving and
accessing data created during the research
process
Create Data
Process Data
Analyse data
Preserve data
Give access to data
Re-use data

What’s the hype? • Open access for publication –what about research data?
• Journal requirement (to enable replication of research)
• Funder requirement e.g. Funding agencies like NSF, NIH, NOAA, DOE, NASA
Funding agencies

Collecting research data • University wide mandate at NTU?
• Requirement from funding agency in Singapore?
“Given this environment, the Data Management Services Group at CMU has chosen to build a research data management service infrastructure first and ask for a university policy on data management later.” - Cornell university poster presentation by Steven Van Tuyl at rdap14
• Setting up a Data management Services Group
• Information gathering : Faculty survey, in-depth data interviews
• Web – presence to define level and type of service

Questions – not 1 nor 2 ..
1. Don’t know when and where researchers publish
2. Researchers want credit for their data but don’t want to release their data
3. Who own’s the data: university or the researcher because he got the grant or funding agency
4. What data events should researcher notify library about?
5. Data citation standards?
6. Rights issues
7. What requirements are imposed by other institutions/funders?
8. Which data should be retained? Data from failed experiments?
9. Who decides which data to keep?
10. How long should data be maintained?
11. How should digital data be preserved?
12. How will data be accessed? 13. How open should data be? 14. How will costs be managed? Who pays?
15. Wide variety of data formats

A data sharing nightmare ..
A scenario that could be quite common unless..
