PhD ResearchTitle:Economic Development and Governance in the Arab Region, 1995-2014
Brief Overview of Research:Following the recent “Arab Spring” the need for a new Arab development model has become essential. That is, development with a human face. This study contributes to these efforts by examining the interdependence of inclusive governance, economic and social inclusion. Three key objectives are addressed, to: (i) evaluate the economic development status of Arab countries (ACs) and the effects of economic reforms; (ii) empirically assess the relationship between governance and economic development in ACs, and examine the differences in the relationship in three main income groups; (iii) develop and recommend a “New Development Framework”, for ACs that is based on a new social contract of mutual accountability. The outcomes will contribute to our understanding of the importance of key governance indicators on development in ACs, and what these countries need to focus on. More importantly, the “New Development Framework,” will provide an alternative path for sustainable development in ACs.

Title:The effect of knowledge sharing on supply chain performance: evidence from the Bangladesh readymade garment industry
Brief Overview of Research:The aim of this research is to explore the key constraints faced by the readymade garment (RMG) business. The research will employ a global chain framework. The product a chain framework is one which links international tread and product assembly to a full package network. A critical distinction in this approach is between buyer and producer product chains. Also a stress is the role play by global value chain leaders, particularly by the buyers, in transferring knowledge along the chains. For small firms in less developed countries (LDCs), participation in value chains is a way to obtain information on the need and mode to gain access to global markets. The reason will address how the knowledge can be shared between firms. Firms manage the resources flow effectively to be able to survive and to grow in a competitive business environment.

Title:External Factors impacts on Consumer attitude toward purchase online luxury shopping
Brief Overview of Research:Recently, many studies have detailed how consumer perceptions and experiences affect attitudes and behaviours towards web service quality and e-satisfaction. Controversy arises when it comes to luxury brands. Luxury brands associate themselves with the concept of exclusivity and they position themselves in the market as such. But in online placement, how do they remain exclusive when information is accessible to everyone? Consumers of luxury products and services have varying opinions on the subject. Not all consumers are susceptible to online marketing and retailing. The perception of consumers is highly relevant when assigning the term luxury to a brand. Therefore, a luxury brand has a certain personality and has an emotional and a creative appeal for the consumer. This study investigates the external factors that impact on consumer attitude towards online luxury shopping and it is the first empirical study to be examined in luxury context. Taking an exploratory approach, the study shows that in the case of brands in the premium luxury segment, external factors may have a positive influence on luxury perceptions, and more specifically on consumer attitude, which in turn may affect his/her to proceed to the buying online process. This study uses the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) (Davis, 1986) as a theoretical grounding to study adoption of using the Web environment for online luxury shopping.

The Determinants of Efficiency, Profitability and Stability in Banking Sector: Comparative Study of Islamic, Conventional and Socially Responsible Banks
Brief Overview of Research:This study aims to investigate the factors that affect efficiency, profitability and stability in the banking sector. The period of this study covers 2005-2012. This study compares three types of banking: Islamic, conventional and socially responsible banks. The statistical methods to identify the determinants are ordinary least square (OLS) and fixed effects models. This study helps managers and policy makers in the banking sector to reduce their costs and increase the profits with lower risks. In addition, finding the positive determinants allow managers’ decisions to be informed by the positive factors more. On the contrary, managers can avoid the negative variables in order to increase efficiency, profitability and stability in banking.

Title:
Knowledge network modelling to support decision-making for strategic intervention in IT project-oriented Change Management
Brief Overview of Research:
This work focuses on knowledge management to enhance decision support systems for strategic intervention in information technology (IT) project-oriented change management. It proposes a model of change management knowledge networks (CMKNM) to support decision by tackling three existing issues: insufficient knowledge traceability based on the relationships between knowledge elements and key factors, lack of procedural knowledge to provide adequate policies to guide changes, and lack of ‘lessons learned’ documentation in knowledge bases. A qualitative method was used to investigate issues surrounding knowledge mobilisation and knowledge networks. Empirical study was undertaken with industries to test the CMKNM. Results are presented from the empirical study on the key factors influencing knowledge mobilisation in IT project-oriented change management, knowledge networks and connections. The CMKNM model allows key knowledge mobilisation factors to be aligned with each other; it also defines the connections between knowledge networks allowing knowledge to be mobilised by tracing knowledge channels to support decision.

Title:An econometric analysis of non-oil sectors and economic growth in the GCC: Evidence from Saudi Arabia and the UAE
Brief Overview of Research:As a depletable resource, oil is a useful source of economic growth, but may not be relied upon for long-term sustainable development. Diversification from oil is needed to achieve this. This research applies three models to examine the most important determinants of oil and non-oil sector economic growth in two of the largest economies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), namely Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The empirical analysis applied the Johansen approach and ECM to access the relationship between all variables, both long and short term. Given the governments’ determination to reduce dependence on oil income, this study focuses on the role of non-oil sectors. Explanatory variables in the models included exports, government spending, investment (private and public), tourism (religious and international), labour and capital, while GDP is used as a dependent variable.

Title:The Determinants and Consequences of corporate social responsibility (CSR) Disclosure Quantity and Quality: Evidence From Saudi Non- Financial Listed Firms
Brief Overview of Research:Corporate Social Responsibility is considered one of the vital issues in the business of the world today. In the last few decades, researchers have indicated the importance of the impact of business operations on the society, environment and communities, particularly, in developed countries. Consequently, there is little research on this issue in developing countries. This study investigates the determinants and consequences of CSR Disclosure level Quantity and Quality with a focus on Saudi Arabia.

Title:Does Affirmative Action policy Impact Labour Market Structure: Evidence from Saudi Arabia
Brief Overview of Research:Few public and social policy subjects have attracted as much attention as Affirmative Action in social sciences. AAP refers to a broad term for strategy that takes some sort of initiative either compulsory or voluntary, to increase, facilitate, maintain, or rearrange the number or status for members of the groups they target usually defined by race or gender, within a larger group. Mainly, it aims to eliminate or prevent past discrimination against protected classes or disadvantaged groups. This study aims to examine this policy effects on labour market structure in Saudi Arabia.

PhD ResearchTitle:Determinants and consequences of adopting accounting standards in Islamic banking: cross country study
Brief Overview of Research:Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) is a non-profit organization based in the Kingdom of Bahrain, with sets of standards for Islamic financial activities. After 25 years of its establishment this study’s primary aim is to contribute to our understanding of the determinants of AAOIFI accounting standards adoption in Islamic banking industry. Key objective is to investigate the determinants of adopting AAOIFI vs IFRS and local standards in Islamic industry empirically. This study covers 30 countries offering Islamic finance services and categorised into three groups: (i) countries adopting AAOIFI; (ii) countries adopting IFRS and; (iii) countries adopting local standards in the Islamic Banking Industry. Data for the analyses include the World Bank Indicators, World Bank Governance Indicators and from the Zawya website. Multinomial Logistic regression run on Gretl would be used to investigate the significance of environmental variables as determinants of accounting standards adoption. Other than filling the literature gaps in this field of study, this study is of importance to many stakeholders including: policy makers, Islamic banks, standards bodies, investors and capital market. Finding the determinants of adapting AAOIFI vs IFRS will help all the interested parties to either adopt AAOIFI or IFRS in Islamic banking industry based on empirical evidences. In addition, finding out the incentives and the motivations of adapting either AAOIFI or IFRS will help the professional standards bodies find out where to promote their standards.

PhD ResearchTitle:The Determinants and Consequences of Risk Disclosures: Evidence from Annual Reports of Saudi Arabian Listed Firms
Brief Overview of Research:The study aims to investigate the practice of risk reporting in the context of Saudi Arabia. Particularly, it addresses the following objectives: (i) measure the risk of reporting; (ii) identify the factors that may affect risk reporting level; (iii) investigate the impact of risk reporting on the value of Saudi Arabian non-financial firms. Quantitative approaches are adopted for the analyses, using a sample of non-financial listed firms in the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawal) over 2006 to 2014, with financial data collected from Tadawul database. The measurements of risk reporting will be done using the manual content analysis technique. A regression analysis will be used to identify the factors that may affect risk reporting. Firm value in the market will be calculated using the Tobin’s Q valuation model, and regression analysis will also be used to examine the impact of risk reporting on the value of Saudi Arabian firms.

Title:An Evaluation of online service failures and recovery strategies in the UK fashion industry
Brief Overview of Research:E-commerce technologies have changed the traditional trade -off between richness and reach. The internet and the web can deliver, to an audience of millions, “rich” marketing messages with text, video, and audio, in a way not possible with traditional commerce technologies such as radio, television, or magazines. Yet, although the potential for e-commerce is undeniable, we have only witnessed its infancy. There are numerous issues related to this new environment that remain largely unexplored and unresolved. One of these issues involves the management of online service failures because of its actual impact on consumer satisfaction and subsequent behaviour.

Title:Effects of political decision on participants of energy market based on the example of “German Energiewende” (energy transition) focused on established hydropower operators.
Brief Overview of Research:Germany has one of the most ambitious renewable energy targets in the world under the term “Energiewende”. With the Energiewende translated to energy transition, Germany sets up a new framework for the electrical power industry. The inspiration behind this research proposal is based on the investigation of the relationship between the current situation of the energy market caused by political decision for the Energiewende and its effects on participants of the energy market focused on established hydropower operators.

PhD ResearchTitle:To what extent does the analysis of structural violence help to explain the persistence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? A case study of the ‘Separation Barrier’Brief Overview of Research:The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the world’s longest standing conflicts. The tension between the Jews and Palestinians started to emerge in the late nineteenth century with the immigration of Jews to the area. The conflict has claimed many victims and has taken a high toll on both sides. Since the collapse of the Oslo Peace Pro-cess in 2000, there have a number of peace initiatives trying to bring an end to the conflict. Yet in spite of the numerous bilateral attempts and third-party interventions, peace between the parties has failed to materialize. This research project proposes a new analysis of the reasons of the continuing failure to achieve a peaceful solution to the conflict, based on Johan Galtung’s triangle of violence: direct, structural and cultural. The project proposes the hypothesis that the continuing failure to address structural and cultural violence prevents the possibility of resolving the conflict, and thus contributes to its protraction. The project seeks to answer the following research questions: What is the scope and magnitude of structural and cultural violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? How does cultural violence justify and legitimize the use of structural and direct violence? What aspects of culture are used to legitimise the use of violence? How does the presence of structural and cultural violence affect Israeli-Palestin-ian relations? How/to what extent does the concept of structural and cultural violence explain the persistence of the conflict? How/to what extent does the peace process address structural and cultural violence?

Career Interests:
Supply chain modelling, retail supply chain, green supply chain, system dynamics modelling, quality & change management, e-retailing, e-commerce, team working, communication and negotiation skills and public engagement.
Brief Overview of Research:The increasing number of organisations accessing new markets to seek higher efficiencies in sourcing and production has heightened the importance of supply chain management today. Consequently, intense competition has also required supply chain managers to consider various capabilities and value creation strategies for their customers. Supply chains are now operating in more dynamic environments, characterized by globalisation, rapidly evolving technologies and increased customer responsiveness, and, therefore, require more integrative and collaborative efforts. Moreover, independent small grocers are facing spiralling cost burden and intense competition from modern and mixed grocery retailers. This research investigates the impact of collaboration strategies on order polices through developing an integrated Grocery Retailer Supply Chain System Dynamics Model that increases the overall retailers’ supply chain efficiency.

Title:The role of Oil in economic development - A case of Libya.
Brief Overview of Research:Countries rich in natural resources grow more slowly, on average, than countries without such resources. This “resource curse” is an empirical regularity documented by a number of studies, starting with the seminal work of Sachs and Warner (1995). A decade of theoretical and empirical work has brought out some of the nuances of the resource curse. The curse seems to relate particularly to so-called point resources such as petroleum and minerals, rather than diffuse resources such as land. While early theories focused on Dutch disease effects of resources, the problem has increasingly come to be identified as one of poor institutions leading to sub-optimal social outcomes. This study investigates empirically whether such a curse exists in Libya and if so, how could it be alleviated?

Title:Crowd Behaviour and Managing Safety
Brief Overview of Research:This research has developed a conceptual framework for effective crowd management strategies from the existing literature that underpins and will be tested against the research to be conducted in relation to events industry practice for this study. It proposes that effective crowd management strategies should adopt a two-tiered developmental approach, whereby the audience profile and legislation unique to an event must be considered first and should then inform a second, detailed phase of crowd management planning linked to design of the event environment, site, and crowd management and control planning to provide a detailed structure for safe event set up and delivery.

Title:The Construction of Graduate Employability: A case study of UK based Hospitality Graduates
Brief Overview of Research:Using a dialogic approach I am analysing graduates ‘narratives of employability’ in order to develop a socially grounded understanding of the future prospects of graduates. This relies on an understanding of employability beyond the skills and attributes discourse commonly found in academia and the media. I therefore draw on structure and agency within my definition of employability and use this in order to inform my discussion. The research takes a case study approach, focusing specifically on students studying hospitality based subjects. This is a particularly interesting due to the balance that must be sought between academic and vocational content of these and other similar degree subjects.

Title:
Media Frames and Foreign Policy Aims; Examining the Framing of Conflict through Print, Online and Social Media
Brief Overview of Research:
My doctoral research involves an examination of the media framing of conflict and subsequent British foreign policy responses. I explore the use of discourse in the construction of media frames through which the public generally access information about global conflict and foreign policymaking. Further attention is levied towards the relationships between media, with data collection spread across both ‘mainstream’ and ‘new’ media, including print, online and social media sources. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) provides a regional focus, with my case studies being the recent conflicts in Libya, Syria and Iraq. My research employs a constructivist approach and utilises framing analysis from the broader tradition of discourse analysis.

Title:Precarity and Precariousness, experiences and ‘intending’ of precarious work in the South West
Brief Overview of Research:My research is on the construction of precarious (short-term, low-pay) work meanings through direct experiences and indirect views, opinions and impressions (‘intending’). Through a range of precarious perspectives provided by migrant, care and hospitality workers, I challenge the view that precarious work has a deterministic and unilaterally-negative impact. For precarious workers in the South West, work, even precarious work, thus, can retain its significance as a source of positive meaning and social support.

PhD ResearchTitle:The Island Image: A means of segmentation
Brief Overview of Research:This project aims to segment visitors to the Isles of Scilly based upon their perceived destination image in order to create a typology. The research will identify whether different types of visitors can be identified when image is used as a segmentation criterion. It is proposed that those with different types of image will engage in different activities and trends may be identifiable with regard to demographic characteristics. The relationship between memory, nostalgia and place image will also be explored in order to further understand image forming agents and the complex destination image.

Since 2011 I have been the Chief Operating Officer, NHS Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group – a Board member with responsibility for managing the business, setting strategic direction and commissioning of health services for Portsmouth city. Previous to this role, I have over 20 years’ experience in public sector strategy, management and operational delivery of services.
PhD ResearchTitle:Liberation and Control: an analysis of the freedoms and governance of NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups
Brief Overview of Research:With the establishment of new NHS bodies as part of the 2012 NHS reforms, the message from the centre strongly emphasised the role of local autonomy in decision-making. At the heart of the emerging NHS network, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), and the GP practices that constitute them, represent the most localised organisational unit of decision-making for local health services. As such they are being seen as symbols of local autonomy, with much of the national policy direction setting out expectations that CCGs are to be the primary decision-makers for healthcare on behalf of their local population. This research evaluates the governance systems that have emerged as part of these reforms and the relationship between the decisions made by local Clinical Commissioning Groups and national policy directions. It enquires as to the boundaries and restrictions that may surround and influence the CCGs’ decisions and seeks to understand the factors that direct their decisions.

About Me:
I currently live and work in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
Career Interests:I see the opportunity in a part-time PhD to add to the body of research on governance and decision-making in the public sector whilst also maintaining a professional role within that sector. In addition, with the significant changes initiated in the NHS in 2012, I will be conducting my research from the early stages of this change giving me the opportunity to evaluate from the start the possible impact on local decision-making of this latest central policy and re-structure. I am interested in social research predominantly from an phenomenological approach, with my current research adopting an ethnographic methodology.

2009 – 2012 Plymouth Business School, Plymouth University, UK BSc (Hons) Tourism Management
2002 – 2009 Estover Community College, UK

During the course of my ResM I have continued to participate in and contribute to the research culture within the Business School. The most predominant example being my contribution to Undergraduate teaching. This has involved participating in fieldwork to Concarneau in October 2014. During this fieldwork I delivered a lecture on River Tourism. In my capacity as a staff member I also had the responsibility of maintaining time schedules. After this trip I was approached by other faculty members to take part in their fieldwork to Amsterdam. On this trip I was responsible for all travel arrangements once we had arrived in the city for the duration of the fieldwork. I contributed to the organization of the River Tourism Conference held at Plymouth University and also delivered a paper. I am now in the process of editing and creating an e-book publication of all the papers delivered at the conference. This is due to be published in late November 2015. As part of Plymouth University’s HTM 135 Module I lectured, set, assessed and marked the Undergraduate’s summative assessment.
PhD ResearchTitle:Mapping Generic Territory: The Pedagogy and Practice of Travel Writing
Brief Overview of Research:An investigation into the pedagogy and practice of travel writing from two humanistic perspectives: (1) academic; (2) practitioner. Like Mansfield (2015) this thesis endeavours to submit uses for the knowledge it generates, filling theoretical apertures concerning the literary and practical knowledge necessary to research and practice the travel writing discourse. To this end, this thesis collates a portfolio of the researcher’s own negotiated sustained professional travel writing production. These entries will be analysed using the ADA apparatus – illustrating the macro and micro elements that contribute to the ‘perfection’, ‘importance’ and ‘successes’ of each. The research also develops a process for eliciting new tourism, or more specifically, travel writing knowledge, in the hope that this toureme will assume validity, reliability and legitimacy from the perspectives of practicing travel writers and the academics that devote their research endeavours to educate students on this literary pedagogy.

Title:Port performances and crude oil export logistics system distribution in Nigeria
Brief Overview of Research:Oil is a major source of energy all over the world and the demand for energy keeps on increasing in homes, industrial and commercial activities. More important, is how this commodity reaches the final customer at the right quantity and cost, and customer satisfaction, are critical factors in the oil and gas logistics chain. This chain involves extraction, production, distribution and sales. Nigeria is one of the world’s largest exporters of crude oil to the international market and the oil sector accounts for a high proportion of the GDP and government revenues. The need to conduct critical inquiry into the Nigerian oil and gas logistics is significant owing to the public perception of the high cost of oil production in Nigeria. A day lost because of a logistics error means millions of dollar lost with estimates indicating that the cost of logistics in countries like Nigeria could be as much as 30% of a project total cost. A better development of this chain is needed since this can bring about cost reductions and effectiveness in the associated infrastructure in the network. The research aim is to look at all the critical avenues to ensure proper logistics management of crude oil exports through critical analysis and evaluation of the oil industry in an ideal system.

Title:An examination of the US Container Security Initiative (CSI) and exploration of its potential implications for EU container port competition
Brief Overview of Research:The security of maritime transport has received particularly significant attention since the 9/11 attack in 2001. As a major maritime security initiative, the voluntary Container Security Initiative (CSI) was established in 2002, managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Nevertheless, implications relevant to port competition distortion have emerged. This research aims to examine the CSI program and find out the potential implications of the introduction of CSI for EU port competition by adopting the Delphi method. This research will also explore some feasible solutions to the problems discovered.

Antecedents and Consequences of Overshooting in the Context of Product Innovation
Brief Overview of Research:My research reveals that when a technological trade-off is broken in favour of the focally improved attributes, the disruption begins immediately from the high-end market of incumbents. The mechanism for high-end disruption to disrupt is through the trade-off-breaking innovation smoothing over the tension between the focally improved attribute and the compromised attribute so that customers will not be so upset by the compromised attributes while in the pursuit of an even better performance of the focally improved attributes.
