Managed Access Training I29 July 2013
Research ethics• Definition:– A system of moral principles. – The recognized rules of human conduct– Values relating to the rightness and wrongness of
certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions.
Research ethics• Ethics are necessary for our
interactions with other people.
• Research dealing with human subjects needs to have ethical considerations.
• Reading and interpreting our results needs to be ethical.
Activity• Try to imagine an ethical challenge that could
be faced in your work with MA expansion or with your partners.
• Share them with the rest of the group (plenary or in private).
Research ethics is applied in three major areas:
1.How to use your research regarding the human society you work with.
2.The integrity of how to collect and analyze the data (information).
3.The way to treat people who participate in research as subjects (participants).
Case studies
• The insider (movie) – whistleblower • Traditional knowledge, crops, medicinal plants, SPAGs • Your ‘friend’ the poacher • Or any of the 2 prepared case studies • Discussion:– What do you think about the situation discussed? – Was anything wrong here? If so, what was wrong? – What would you do, and why would you do it? – Discuss the case within your group.
Best practices for presenting and using community data
Data should be reported to communities and partners in a timely manner
Data should be presented clearly and objectively-
both the good and the bad
Personally identifiable information (PII) should be protected
Researchers should have consent from respondents to collect and use
data- including photographs
