Who will/ should read it? Any person noitamrofer laicos dna pihsnoitaler namuh cisinrtni ni detseretni
Synopsis: Melghat, situated amid the dense forests in the Satpuda mountain ranges, is a region
steeped in poverty. A doctor couple, Ravindra and Smita Kolhe, decided to take an untrodden path,
and opened a dispensary in this land of no doctors in 1985. With a consultation fee of R s. 1, the
Kolhe‟s treated and saved the life of innumerable patients. With time, they focused on other social
problems, striving relentlessly to resolve them.
Challenges were plenty, like malnutrition, poverty, unemployment, atrocities on women, corruption,
forced conversions, or smuggling in forests. Dr Ravindra and Dr Smita confronted them head on. They
donned the role of a watchdog.
They evolved a scientific cultivation pattern that turned farming into a gainful activity. Melghat today has
set a benchmark for the schemes to fight malnutrition all over India. A total of 11 primary health centres
(PHCs) have been opened in the area. They explored new and newer ways of transformation, but did
not build an institution.
But this is not merely an inspiring &path-breaking story of the Kolhe‟s. It is about human traits that
make people put in an honest life‟s work. It is not just about Melghat. It is about people crushed by
penury, abuses, and corruption but still happy to share their last bite with others. The book offers a
universal experience that such people and such villages do exist.
