RESEARCH COMMITTEE
“As we near the end of 2016 and looking eagerly towards the dawn of 2017,
I feel, this is the right time to reflect on our contributions for the last three
years in terms of research. A real awareness on “where do we stand in
evidence based nursing practice” is essential in the context of the
advancement not only in the profession of nursing but also in the allied
disciplines.
This is the first and humble effort in bringing up the research projects &
publications of the faculty & students so far in the form of a research
newsletter. I hope this will facilitate in placing firm steps in the
enhancement of quality in research, critical thinking and motivation for all.
I wish to personally thank our Publication Coordinator Mr. Rajeesh R Nair
for his sincere efforts in compiling and presenting it to our well-wishers.”
Wishing all of you a happy new year,
In AMMA,

Research Corner: What is Statistical Power? Statistical power refers to the likelihood of detecting an actual significant difference (or association) when one truly exists. Having a large enough sample size increases confidence that an association will be seen if it truly exits. It is important to calculate sample size during the study design phase, before data collection, to ensure adequate power. Alternatively, power can be estimated if the sample size is predetermined. Various statistical software programs can be used to calculate sample size or power, along with assistance from a biostatistician or epidemiologist. The following information is necessary for performing a sample size or power calculation:
Significance level (usually P<0.05)
Desired power (usually 80%)
Desired effect size (e.g., expected mean difference in outcome between groups)
Estimated variance Desired effect size and variance can be estimated from pilot data or previously published studies
