Music Industry

Famous music video directors in the music industry include; Jonathon Dayton and Vallerie Faris who have worked with musicians such as Oasis and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Jonas Akerland is another director who has created videos for Madonna and Lady Gaga.Directors known for creating videos in my chosen Chill genre include the Icelandic pair; Helgi Johannsson and Hörður Sveinsson, Jonathan Wing and Jason Bock who have all directed the music videos for the tracks I’ve posted previously in my blog.Music videos can be accessed online through steaming websites such as YouTube or TV channels dedicated to music videos such as MTV and SmashHits. Technological advancements mean that these can now be accessed from most devices such as smart phones and tablets etc.

Music Videos

A music video is made after a single is released. The team of directors, producers, film crew and artists join together to form the video. The lyrics are often mimed to- This can be done by slowing down the track and singing to it then speeding up the recording and adding the original song over the top. This usually means that the synchronisation is a lot more precise. The process is lengthy and has many stages to ensure that the video is technically and visually perfect. The track can be played over in the background of the videoing to get a visual on how the movements fit the sound and lyrics.A budget needs to be set and the video planned around this. The team needs to book out accommodation or transport dependent on where the shots need to be taken and every aspect considered and planned thoroughly. The following stages include extensive filming, sound control, editing and special effects.

Purpose The purpose of any music video is to promote the track. It often gives more of an insight into the meaning of the song or emphasises a certain portrayal of the singer. Successful videos often boost the sales of the song. Perhaps the most important role of the music video is to leave a lasting impression on the audience as this will also lead to increased viewings through word of mouth. An example is Michael Jackson’s song ‘Thriller’ who’s video is arguably more memorable than the song itself.
