Top Story FMCG majors offer hefty discounts FMCG companies such as Cadbury, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Procter & Gamble and Heinz have launched discounts ranging anywhere between 10% and 70% on high‐value items in the past two weeks in an attempt to drive premium products amid slowing demand. P&G is offering 15% extra for its INR 3 shampoo sachets while HUL has been offering discounts on its premium detergent brand Surf Excel Matic. This has been made possible by falling input costs for these manufacturers.
News Update General Boffi forays into Indian market Italian luxury kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobe maker, Boffi SpA is expected to form a subsidiary to manage businesses in Asian markets more independently. This is expected to be formed by end of 2013. Early this March, Boffi opened its first shop in Delhi, in partnership with the Bhartiya Group, a fashion and real estate firm. Boffi has opened a 4,000 sq. ft single‐brand store in Mehrauli, New Delhi. It also plans on expanding to other Indian cities such as Mumbai and Bangalore. Woodland forays into personal care sector Footwear major Aero Club, manufacturer of Woodland brand of apparels and footwear, is all set to enter the FMCG category, with a range of personal care products. The products, such as sunscreens and anti‐bacterial lotions, would be imported from a German company, BNS. The brand plans to use the distribution strength of its 380 company‐owned stores before selling it across retailers. It has allotted INR 800‐1000 mn for investment this fiscal as it expands with new stores and enters the FMCG business. The 20‐year‐old brand plans on opening 50‐60 stores this year and all of them will be company‐owned. Hindustan Unilever buys out Aquagel Chemicals FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) announced the complete take over of Aquagel Chemicals Pvt Ltd by acquiring the remaining 74 percent stake in the company. It already held an investment to the extent of 26 percent of the equity share capital of Gujarat‐based ACPL. This made ACPL a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindustan Unilever Ltd with effect from April 1, 2013.

Aquagel Chemicals manufactures soaps and detergents. It was set up around two decades ago as a sister concern of privately held Madhu Silica Pvt Ltd, a precipitated silica major in India. Vibgyor introduces new range of jewellery Kolkata based, Vibgyor Gold is all set to introduce a new range of gold jewellery collection under its brand name Virtue to celebrate Bengali New Year. The range comprises necklaces, bangles, drop earrings and other items. The range is priced from INR 5,000 onwards along with various discounts to woo customers. With ‘Poila Boishak’ (Bengali New Year) just a week away, it is a opportune time for jewellery makers to launch a new range of jewellery as gold is also considered highly auspicious in all Bengali households. Versace partners with Infinite Luxury Group Italian fashion house Versace has partnered with designer Manav Gangwani's Infinite Luxury Group, just months after snapping its ties with Blues Clothing Company late last year. Gianni Versace SpA and Infinite Luxury are re‐opening the existing stores and setting up new ones. Nickelodeon brings Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise to India Viacom18’s kids broadcast brand Nickelodeon India has forayed into the action toys category with the launch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) toy products. The new toy‐line is created by Playmates and is targeted at young adventure loving young boys. The product will hit the market in May 2013. The company has appointed Toy Triangle as its distribution partner. The launch will be supported by a 360‐degree marketing campaign that will also include on ground events in four cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai. Priced between INR 699 and INR 8,999, TMNT toys will be distributed across retail formats such as Hamleys, Shoppers Stop, Hypercity and Reliance Timeout. Rusta launches India operations Swedish retail chain Rusta has launched its Indian operations by opening its country headquarters at Delhi. The New Delhi office of Rusta underlines the company's ambitions to increase business in India. Textiles, handicraft, rugs and small furniture, lighting, home decoration, cooking tools and utensils are the areas in which Rusta intends to increase its sourcing from India. Prayag Group enters fast moving consumer goods space Kolkata based, Prayag Group on Monday announced its foray into FMCG sector. The latest entrant into this consumer goods space launched 30 goods across personal, home and kitchen care segments. The company would use its direct selling network to sell these products across West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and North‐eastern states.

Reliance Brands to roll out London Fog in North India Iconix Lifestyle India, a 50:50 JV between Iconix Brand Group and Reliance Brands, has partnered with North India‐based retailer Kapsons to manufacture the 80‐year old American fashion brand London Fog in India. London Fog is famous for manufacturing coats and jackets. It has a string of associations with Hollywood celebrities like Kevin Bacon, Eva Longoria, Gisele Bundchen, Christina Hendricks and Nicole Scherzinger. London Fog will compete with the likes of Tommy Hilfiger here in India. A London Fog shirt in India will start at the price point of INR 1,800 and is likely to be positioned higher than Arrow and Van House. Hidesign launches sunglasses Hidesign has launched a range of sunglasses priced between INR 3,000 and INR 4,500. The glasses will be sold on the fashion plank through the brands own stores. They have been placed in 40 stores and soon across its 74 exclusive stores. Hidesign’s sunglasses would be priced at the lower‐end offerings of Ray Ban and brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Esprit, Elle and Fossil.
News Update Expansion Plans Shoppers Stop to invest big this fiscal Mumbai‐based premier department store chain, Shopper's Stop Ltd, plans to invest INR 1.25 bn this year, to expand its various brands of retail stores. The company is planning to add around 20 stores across its brands during the period. It also plans to expand its department stores with around 8‐10 more outlets, the large format hyper market HyperCity with 2‐3 stores and its premier home solution chain HomeShop with another 2‐3 shops and five speciality stores across its other brands. Although the company primarily focuses on tier I cities, it is also expanding into the cities like Surat, Agra and Thane, where it expects more customer attraction.. Citizen launches new exclusive store in Kerala Citizen watches launched its new exclusive store at Lulu Mall in Kerala with a range of collection that is fashionable, casual and sporty. Currently, Citizen has approximately 600 retail outlets across India, including 40 in Kerala. Baby care retailer Toonz reveals expansionary plans Baby care products retail chain, Toonz Retail plans to open 100 stores in the next one year. It currently has 40 stores across 7 states. Toonz opened its first store in 2010 at Bangalore. The investment ranges from INR 5 mn to 7.5 mn for each store. Currently, Toonz has 4 stores in Delhi, 2 in UP, 3 in Haryana, 2 in Punjab, 11 in Andhra Pradesh, 6 in Karnataka, 9 in Kerala

and 2 in Tamil Nadu. The company plans to open 10 stores in Hyderabad and 10 in rest of the Andhra Pradesh in the near future. Wowmom and Superyoung are the two brands that Toonz has been promoting since it was founded. Wowmom offers products for infants and toddlers while Superyoung sells products for children between 2 and 12 years. Gems and Jewelry market major Gitanjali Group forays into apparel segment Indian Gems and Jewelry market leader Gitanjali Group has entered the apparels segment as part of its brand extension of its popular brands and is planning up to 300 selling points across the country in this calendar year. For online apparel sales, Gitanjali Group has signed up with Jabong, Myntra and Flipkart. The company will soon launch apparels under Asmi and Viola. It will also soon enter into men apparel under Revv, a brand targeting the youth population. The Gems and Jewelry company is planning to invest INR 200‐250 mn as marketing expenditure to promote these apparel brands. The company is targeting the apparel segment penetrate the Tier II and III cities besides the metro and Tier I cities. These apparels under the Gitanjali brands will mainly be supplied in its manufacturing units in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Prowl Germany to invest INR 6 bn in India Prowl Germany UG, a multi‐brand retailer of baby products, plans to invest INR 6 bn in India in the next 4‐5 years to set up a manufacturing plant and a chain of stores. The company formed a distribution partnership in January with Kochi‐based Zaal Commercial Pvt. Ltd for its 101‐year‐old feeding accessories brand called Nip, and is preparing to file an application for foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi‐brand retail. Prowl Germany represents four brands—Nip, wooden toys brand Hess‐Spielzeug, portable baby beds brand Deryan and Spiegelburg International’s concept‐ and character‐based products range. Gems and Jewelry major PC Jewelers to expand by FY2014 end Delhi based Jewelry maker PC Jeweler plans to open around 20 new showrooms in the country by the end of the current financial year. The company has opened its first showroom in the western region in Ahmedabad recently. With this showroom, the company now has 33 showrooms in the country. The Gems and Jewelry retailer plans to increase the number of total showrooms to 50 by March 2014. The jeweler has also come out with a new strategy to attract high‐end customers with a special lounge. Recent decrease in the gold price has led to increase in sales in the Indian Gems and Jewelry market with jewelry retailers also believing that gold prices will decrease further from current levels. Raymond Weil to expand presence in Indian luxury watch market Swiss luxury watchmaker, Raymond Weil is looking to set up three more stores and also expand its presence across at least 10 multi‐brand outlets in the country in the coming year.

Raymond Weil is one of the last independent Swiss brands in the Indian luxury watch market. The company's watches are priced between INR 45,000 and INR 0.8 mn. Factors like growing affluence, young population and the increasing desire to spend on luxury products are expected to drive sales in the Indian luxury watch market. Madura Fashion to treble 'The Collective' outlets by 2015 Aditya Birla group firm Madura Fashion & Lifestyle plans to expand the reach of its multi‐brand retail chain 'The Collective' by almost three times at an investment of over INR 100 bn by 2015. The company is looking to increase the number of 'The Collective' outlets to over 20 from the current 7. All the stores will be company‐owned. The average size of a 'The Collective' store is around 15,000 sq ft and each unit requires an investment of about INR 0.07‐ 0.1 bn to be set‐up.
