    Prof. Richard Stobart

    Richard Stobart is Head of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough

    University and Professor of Automotive Engineering. He is also Director of the Innovation &

    Research Centre at Loughborough, funded by Caterpillar, the manufacturer of engines and

    machinery. Professor Stobarts research interests include engine systems, engine control,

    diagnosis techniques, control methods for hybrid and electric vehicles, and the control of fuel

    cell systems.

    Professor Stobart is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and received his research trainingin advanced engine technologies. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and

    is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Engineering Meetings Board.

    Dr. Yi Guo

    Dr. Yi Guo is currently an Assistant Professor in Department of Electrical and Computer

    Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Electrical and

    Information Engineering from University of Sydney, Australia, in 1999. She was a postdoctoral

    research fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2000 to 2002, and a visiting Assistant

    Professor at University of Central Florida from 2002 to 2005. Her research interests are mainly

    in nonlinear systems and control, autonomous mobile robotics, and control of multi-scale

    complex systems. She has authored and co-authored over fifty papers in archived journals,

    conference proceedings, and as book chapters. She has served as Program and Organizing

    Committee member of a number of international conferences, including IEEE International

    Conference on Robotics and Automation (2006, 2008), IEEE International Conference on

    Intelligence Robots and Systems (2009, 2010), IEEE International Conference on Robotics and

    Biomimetics (2009). Dr. Guo is a Senior Member of IEEE. She was the Meeting Finance Chair

    of IEEE Society of Robotics and Automation from 2004 to 2009. She currently serves on IEEE-USA Critical Infrastructure Protection Committee.

    Dr Jinling Wang is an Associate Professor in the School of Surveying & Spatial Information

    Systems, University of New South Wales (UNSW). His major research interest is in the areas of

    geo-positioning, mapping and navigation using multi-sensors. He is a Fellow of the Royal

    Institute of Navigation, UK, and a Fellow of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). DrWang is a member of the Editorial Board for the international journal GPS Solutions, and was

    Chairman of the study group (2003-2007) on pseudolite applications in positioning and

    navigation within the IAGs Commission 4. He was elected 2004 President of the International

    Association of Chinese Professionals in Global Positioning Systems (CPGPS), and the Founding

    Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Global Positioning Systems (2002-2007), Conference

    Convener of the 2004 International Symposium on GPS/GNSS in Sydney, Australia; Technical

    Chair for the world's premier GPS/GNSS conference (ION GNSS2008) in the USA. He holds a

    PhD in GPS/Geodesy from the Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia. He has

    published over 200 papers in journals and conference proceedings as well as two commercial

    Prof. J Kondo Hloindo Adjallah

    IEEE Member, NSF I/UCRC IMS Fellow

    Prof. Adjallah is currently with the Ecole Nationale d'Ingnieurs

    de Metz (a University of Technology) and head of the electrical engineering department, since

    September 2008. He was Associate Professor at the Universit de Technologie de Troyes (UTT),

    France, from 1994 to 2008. In 2003, he became Research Director, a national award received

    from the Universit de Technologie de Compigne, which raised him to the rank of senior

    researcher. From 2005 to 2006, he has been visiting Professor at the University of Cincinnati,

    Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Nuclear Engineering, NSF Industry/University

    Cooperative Research Center on Intelligent Maintenance Systems. He serves in the French

    National Association of Maintenance Engineers, member of the French Academic Working

    Group on Modeling and Optimisation of the Distributed & Collaborative Maintenance

    affiliated to CNRS, and also in the European Safety and Reliability Data Association (ESReDA).

    He is also member of the IEEE society since 2002 and leader of the international cooperative

    research network for the management of durable infrastructures of development (MID). Heorganized the International Conference on Intelligent Maintenance Systems, July 15-16, 2004,

    Arles, France, and special sessions on manufacturing systems monitoring and maintenance for

    the International Conferences INCOM2006 of IFAC and SSSM06 of IEEE. He is author of

    several papers and served as guest editor for international scientific journals.

    His research interests include methods for components reliability analysis, health monitoring,

    data collection and analysis, predictive maintenance decision support, and networked distributed

    systems management. After years of research with the research group of Industrial Systems

    Optimization at the UTT and the French CNRS affiliate Institute Charles Delaunay, he leads

    currently the maintenance and reliability research team of the Laboratory of Industrial

    Engineering and Production of Metz (LGIPM).

    Prof. Jiamei DengDr. Jiamei Deng received the Ph.D. degree in cybernetics from University of Reading in 2005.

    She Currently works as a research Associate in Loughborough University. She was a research

    fellow in the University of Sussex between 2006 and 2007. Before her PhD study in Reading,

    she was an associate professor in Shanghai University. Her research interests include predictivecontrol, nonlinear control, sliding mode control, optimal control, system identification,

    optimization, process control, power control, black-box modeling, automotive control and energy

    systems. Dr. Deng has published forty refereed papers in both Journal and conferences.

    Dr. Xiaolong Li

    Dr. Xiaolong Li received his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degrees in

    Electrical and Information Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in

    1999 and 2002, respectively. He received his PhD degree from The University of Cincinnati in

    2006. In 2006, he joined the faculty in the Department of Industrial and Engineering at

    Morehead State University, USA. In 2008 he moved to Indiana State University where he is an

    Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics, Computer and Mechanical Engineering

    Technology. His current research interests include design and analysis of wireless and mobile

    system, performance modeling, ad hoc networks, QoS issues and Microcontroller-based

    applications. Dr. Li published more than 25 papers on International conference proceedings and

    International Journals.

    Abstract:Throughout the history of engine development there has been a need for engine control systems

    to regulate the engines speed and load. Until the advent of electronic systems, those functions

    were provided by mechanical devices. With the need for a reduction in exhaust emissions and the

    growing interest in fuel economy, electronic systems brought both precision and flexibility.

    Electronic controls also brought the opportunity to apply the kind of control technique that had

    been previously applied in aerospace applications. The internal combustion engine posed unique

    challenges that required an adaptation of existing techniques. This keynote lecture will review

    the progress of engine control and highlight the current challenges and how those challenges

    being addressed through an exciting research agenda.

    Abstract:Collective behaviors have long been observed in naturally occurring systems, e.g., flocks of

    birds, arrays of nano-particles, and clusters of biological organisms. With the remarkable

    advances in networking technologies, a wide range of man-made systems have displayed

    cooperative behaviors, e.g., large power systems, transportation networks, and distributed sensor

    components communicating across high-speed data networks. This talk presents recent research

    advances in nonlinear control of multi-agent networked systems. In particular, cooperative

    control of distributed robotic systems and friction control of nano-scale particles will be

    addressed.

    In the first part of the talk, the problem of controlling a group of mobile agents to form a

    designated formation while flocking is considered. A potential field based method is used to

    drive the agents moving in connection with their neighbors, and flocking with environmental

    constraints. Stability properties are studied to guarantee that all agents eventually form the

    desired formation while flocking, and flock safely without collision with the environment

    boundary.

    The second part of the talk deals with friction control at the nanoscale, where a one-dimensional

    model of interconnected particles is established to imitate the atomic force microscopy (AFM)

    tip moving on a substrate. Stability analysis of the interconnected particle array is conductedusing Lyapunov stability theory. A feedback vibration control is then designed to reduce the

    friction force of the sliding AFM system. Comparing to the traditional way of controlling friction

    by chemical means, our proposed control provides a paradigm-shift mechanism to tune frictional

    dynamics mechanically by adding vibrations to accessible system element.

    Plenary Speech 3: Modelling and Quality Control for Satellite Navigation:Progress and Challenging Issues

    Abstract:

    A Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) includes a space-borne satellite constellation,

    ground control stations and user receivers. As more and more human activities are relying on

    the use of satellite navigation technology, the reliability and availability of the satellite

    navigation solutions has become a major issue. This issue can be addressed through robust

    integration between various GNSS satellite navigation systems (such as, American GPS,

    European Galileo, Ruassin Glonass, Chinese Compass) and between GNSS and other

    complementary navigation sensors, such as, Pseudo-Satellites (Pseudolites or PL): a ground-

    based radio ranging signal transmitter and Inertial Navigation System (INS): a self-contained

    and autonomous sensor based on accelerometers and gyroscopes for position and attitude

    determination.

    At the very heart of positioning and navigation data processing is the use of the modern optimal

    estimation theory to process the measurements for reliable positioning results. Before any

    optimal estimation procedure can be applied, both the functional and stochastic models of the

    sensor measurements need to be defined. Therefore, major efforts should be made to seek

    fundamental understanding of the statistical and geometric characteristics inherent within themeasurements from various navigation sensors. Such knowledge is then used to design robust

    modelling and quality control procedures formulti-sensor navigation systems, towards reliable

    and seamless navigation solutions for various applications.

    This keynote presentation reviews recent progress, and discuses the challenging issues, in

    developing modelling and quality control procedures for use in positioning and navigation with

    modern GNSS constellations and the integration of GNSS with other sensors.

    Abstract:

    The development of the nanotechnologies, the biotechnology and the technologies of

    communication and information, pushed back the limits of information of the product, which

    forces to reformulate the problem of extraction of information on health condition of the product

    over the life cycle. Thus, the performance of a product should not be limited any more only to

    the evaluation of macroscopic measurements, as the state of the components can be now

    evaluated starting from intrinsic data at the level nanometric. It will thus be possible to

    characterize a component in the product by information of DNA type (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)

    that will enable following, for example, the degradations of involved materials. This prospect can

    help reinforcing the quality of the collected data to feed the information extraction models.

    Decision support requires data and information of high quantity in all level in the product

    decomposition. This need led today the human society to becoming increasingly voracious to

    information on products or systems lifecycle. Data quality has forced improving the reliability of

    the data collection systems for product life cycle management. Unfortunately, there does not

    exist yet of well-established models of data collection process enabling strengthening their

    effectiveness. On the other hand, the advances in information technologies and the increasing

    power of computer systems enable to consider products and production systems with valueadded support services. Thus, it is a challenge today to design quite intelligent and self-healing

    products, by using the nanotechnologies and intelligent embedded information devices. In this

    presentation, we will describe the products health condition information extraction approach, for

    decision support in maintenance and in risk assessment. A modeling approach of data and

    information collection processes, based on the product identification technologies and the

    nanotechnologies, will be presented with the associated data processing tools. It will also point

    out the emerging scientific problems, of which solutions will enable to make efficient, the

    information systems supporting the product lifecycle and health condition monitoring.

    Abstract:Hybrid systems are composed of continuous systems and discrete systems. Hybrid system

    control is in its infancy as a branch of systems engineering. The newly emerging energy

    requirement has made the hybrid control become a hot topic. One example is that a renewable

    energy scheme uses a combination of methods to maintain a reliable supply. Each mode (wind,

    wave, tidal and solar) may be used at maximum efficiency, but from time to time, one or more

    modes may not be accessible due to extreme conditions or to a breakdown. The choice of modes

    will vary according to the prevailing weather conditions, how much energy is stored and the

    demand for power.

    Another example is the hybrid vehicle in which an engine [probably working with an alternative

    fuel] powers a generator with some of its output combined with the output of an electric motor.

    The motor uses electricity previously stored in a battery or possibly a super-capacitor where

    braking energy has been stored from the last braking event. The engine is complicated by the

    need to switch modes (from compression to spark ignition for example) to stay efficient.

    Hybrid control is concerned with the proper management of systems that will switch between

    modes. Within those modes a control process is needed. Between modes a smooth and efficient

    transition is needed.

    This speech will address the key issues related hybrid systems, such as, modelling, supervisory

    control, optimal control, robust control, and stability problems.

    Abstract:

    Mobile ad hoc networks have now become one of the most vibrant and active fields of

    communication and networking research. Given many intriguing future applications of mobile ad

    hoc networks, there are still some critical challenges and open problems to be solved. Thus,

    broadly this presentation will address several challenging issues and the future work of mobile ad

    hoc networks.
