Rock music is a genre of popular music thatoriginated as "rock and roll" in the UnitedStates in the 1950s, and developed into arange of different styles in the 1960s andlater. Rock music mostly involves electricguitars, electric bass and drums, like othergenres as well. But, modern rock involvesdistorted guitars, effected bass, drums withsteel snare and a wide range of equipmentsis used in the modern rock. 5. Rock is further on divided into types.Some of the types of rock are given below:Alternative RockSoft RockHard RockProgressive RockPunk Rock 6. General Rock is derived from the rock music. It was introduced in1990s. It is more of a heavy and progressive form of rock music.There are several bands all over the world who produces generalrock music. For example, Dream Theater (American), Nickelback(Canadian Band), Entity Paradigm (Pakistani Band), Nirvana(American Band), Foo Fighters (American Band), etc. I am inspiredby all of the bands as mentioned above, specially, by DreamTheater because, the music they produce, attracts me and thestructure of their music, inspires me. They play very technical songs,which are quite difficult to play. For example, A Nightmare toRemember, Metropolis, Hollow Years, The Dance of Eternity. Iwanted to make my song very difficult and challenging, thats y Iopted this genre for my portfolio of Media Studies. I tried to make thetrack sound good and technical at the same time as well, for theaudience. 7. The Looking Glass DreamTheater (Example # 1)I am inspired by the video of The Looking Glass Dream Theateras it uses dark lighting, variety of camera shots and angles, which Imay use in my self-produced music tracks video for the portfolio, butnot confirmed. Some of the screenshots of Dream Theater songsvideo are shown, in next slides. 8. Guitar Close-Up is used here because a guitar riff has been played at thisparticular shot. 9. Birds Eye Shot is used here to show Mike Manginis giant drum kit. 10. Over the shoulder shot is used here to show that both of the guitarists areplaying at the same time. 11. The band have used their own jam room forthe shoot of this video and I will also use thisidea in my video. 12. Very light make up has been applied on DreamTheater in this video. They have kept it totally naturaland I think that I should also keep it this way. 13. All of the band members have long hair in the video, as mostlyrock musicians or metal musicians have long hair because itgives a heavy and a dark impact on the audience. Well, the set used in this video is quite simple, but the camera shots,angles and lighting used in this video are very reasonable and attractivefor the audience. Lights used in this video are white, which creates anepic, dull and aggressive appearance. The thing I like the most about thevideo is directions. I am planning to use such directions in my musicvideo. 16. The location used in this video is a house, andthe video has shot in a jam room as shown in thenext slide. 17. The Location 18. A high angle shot has been used in the video to show the drum kit and theother equipment in the room. It also focuses the drummer and the guitaristof the band. 19. A low angle shot is used to focus on Chad Karoeger while playing theguitar riff. 20. Another high angle shot it used to show the entire jam room below thestairs. I saw this shot for the very first time in a rock video and if I will geta chance to take a high angle shot in my music video, I will use such typeof a shot. 21. HairstylesMembers of Nickelback also have short hair like Entity Paradigm (Shownin the next example). Maybe, the trend of long hair is changing day by dayin rock bands or the modern rock bands. 22. The Make-UpThe Make-up used in this video is of such a type which looks good in whitelighting as it has kept so natural, like the previous example of The LookingGlass Dream Theater. 23. Website URL: www.nickelback.com 24. Entity Paradigm is a Pakistani General Rockband. The video of Ajab Tamasha is one of myfavorite video ever made. The yellow and warmlighting and the pyrotechnics made this videolook so good. They gave it a lively and a rockingfeeling. It has a perfect video opening as shownin next slide and I may use such type of openingfor my music video. 25. The Opening 26. The pyrotechnics used in the video enhanced the level ofthe video. It gave a lively feeling. This concept is used veryrarely in the videos as pyrotechnics are costly and they doesnot fix/suits in every Rock music video. 27. Water splashes were stroked on the drums to create a different andan attractive appearance. I have never seen such type of concept inany video so far. 28. The Make-UpBlush on and eye make-up are used in the video to create a rock feelingbecause most of the rock/metal bands uses such type of make up to expressa dark feeling. If you compare it with the other examples, no one has appliedsuch type of make-up, so this example is comparatively unique from the othervideos. 29. Hairstyles and TheLocationAll of the band members have short hair unlike most of the rock bands.The location used in the video is a big hall. 30. The video of Nightmare by the famous bandAvenged Sevenfold is quite different from theother examples. The video contains theperformance as well as the narrative acts. Thenarrative depicts lead vocalist M. Shadows aboutto undergo surgery, when the surgeons take himout of the room on a gurney. So this idea iscomparatively different from the other videos andmakes it unique. 32. A screenshot from the video is shown below of the narrative. Thelocation used in this part of the video is a hospital. Whereas, theperformance part of the video has shot in a studios small room, asshown in the next slide. 33. The Location 34. The Make-UpThe make-up used by the band members is very different, one of theexample of a band member is shown below. He have used a make-upbase on his face and the blood on his forehead to show an evilappearance. 35. A guitar close up has taken while the guitarist is playing the solo, just tomake the video more attractive and natural. 36. HairstylesWild hairstyles like spikes are used by the band, unlike the otherbands, one of the band members hairstyle is shown below. 37. So it is an another example of a music videowhich contains narrative as well as theperformance shots in the video. A graveyard isshown in the narrative and the whole concept ofthe song is shown in the narrative. The locationsused in the video are a graveyard and a liveconcert. The Make-UpSo this is going to be my first example in which no make-ups are used bythe band members as they have merged a live concert video in their musicvideo. 45. A transition between the narrative and performance part of the video isshown below. None of the other examples contains such type of transitionused in this music video. 46. If we talk about sound, Dream Theater uses a varietyof musical instruments, including Guitars, 6-StringsBass Guitar, Pearl Drum Kit, Keyboards, Steel Guitar,Fingerboard etc. Every music has a different feel. Softsongs gives you an emotional feel and hard songsgives you a crazy feel. If we talk about DreamTheaters wither, it gives you a deep, emotional feel. Ifyou talk about Dream Theaters Enigma Machine, itgives you a hard, aggressive and a crazy feeling but ifyou talk about my own song, which I have produced forthe portfolio, it gives you both types of the feeling,emotional in chorus and aggressive in verses and riff. 47. Logo is a graphic mark or design whichrepresents a firm, band, etc.A font is a specific typeface of a certain sizeand style. Logo and fonts of a band depends on thegenre of course, as all of the logos and thefonts cannot be used in every type of music.Rock bands uses a Gothic or simple type offont and logo, pop bands use fancy type offont and logo. It all depends on the music aband produces. I will use Gothic fonts andsimple logos for my project. 48. The distinct shape of alphabets (especially that of O) in theMaiden logo superbly depicts the heavy metal imagery the bandis closely associated with. The Iron Maiden logo has probablysold bigger amounts of T-shirt and merchandise sales than mostof the other metal bands. The font used is Metal Lord and indeedgives the Iron Maiden logo a slick metallic touch and finish. Thegrey and red colors in the font signify passion, strength andrefinement.The distinctive features of the maiden logo indeed classify itamong the best rock band logos of all time.Creed have used a font named as Mason,which represents the band perfectly.Creed literally means Faith and withrespect to the meaning of the bandsname, they have used a modern simpletype of font. 49.
