GM went bankrupt in 2009, and it affected upwards of 11,000 workers directly. Indirectly, it will affect every large manufacture of GM products throughout the country. Along with GM’s bankruptcy, it will close nearly 2,100 dealerships, also leading to more job losses. The retirees may experience a reduction in health care benefits as well. However, there is speculation that GM will pick back up.

Detroit’s city is in collapse. There is inflation, over $5 billion in healthcare debts, and the highest homicide rate in 40 years. It has been deemed for the last 20 years one of the United States’ crime capital. But, recently, population has increased and unemployment rate has decreased. The city is a hot spot for investors who want to take on a challenge because they feel Detroit has potential despite it’s negative statistics. Because of they many investments going on in the city, it is now improving from where it once was. However, Detroit’s debts are piling up faster than they can be paid. So an investor, Rand Paul, has organized a plan to encourage a neoliberal market with much lower taxes and less restrictive visa guidelines. On top of the investments, Detroit is planning to “make a comeback” by enhancing it’s arts, culture, and history in hopes of bringing in more traffic.

Cities like Detroit that are declining rather than improving have shown to be the perfect selection for careful economical and real estate revitalization. There are groups called “Think Tanks” that insist on restoring the land market of Detroit by encouraging homeownership and an increase in capitalism. They believe homeownership is the success to secure neighborhoods, and they have collected their data through meticulous examination and exploration of Detroit’s “legislative proceedings, tax foreclosure auction data, and interviews with developers, officials, and activists” (Akers).
