Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

Some of the human activities can cause problems to the community, in to the

nation and the entire world. Human activities also affect the Earth’s atmosphere as they

increase the amount of greenhouse gases, aerosols (small particles) and cloudiness. In the

United States researcher Phillips (2013) says, the first change has resulted in wet areas,

such as the tropics, becoming wetter, while drier regions such as deserts have continued

to parch. The effect is expected to worsen as temperatures rises.

According to Sim (2013) in the Philippines, climate change is already having

dramatic effects on forests, natural resources and people’s livelihoods it became a hotspot

for climate change disasters particularly the risk for agriculture and food security due to

extreme El Niño and severe tropical cyclones. Severe super typhoons like Pablo that

destroyed millions worth of agricultural products and infrastructure. We cannot do

anything to stop the changing of the environment for it is already there but we can do our

best to slow the change.

In Tagum City especially in Barangay San Miguel, the resident’s perception on

human activities increases their prevention and protection with the help of their barangay

officials. The officials of their barangay implement programs and activities such as

cleaning and feeding programs to unite and nourish the bonds of its residents and assign

barangay police in every purok to ensure the safety of the residents. Until recently, those

Page 3: Research Project V

warnings were regarded as uncertain predictions of possible problems in the distant

future. (Tacio, 2010)

The researchers are encouraged to conduct a study to find out the level of

perception of residents of Brgy. San Miguel on human activities and their economic

status. The researchers came up with the idea of conducting the present study because of

the factthat, those residents of Brgy. San Miguel is suffering from the effect of human

activities in their community. In this regard, the researchers thought of measuring the

level of perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel on human activities and their

economic status.

Statement of the Problem

This study deals with the perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel on

human activities and their economic status. More specifically, the study seeks to answer

the following questions:

1. What is the level of perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel on the

following human activities:

1.1. fiscal management

1.2. usage of resources

2. What is the level of economic status of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel?

3. Is there a significant relationship between perception of the residents of Brgy.

San Miguel on human activities and their economic status?

Page 4: Research Project V

Objective of the Study

The objective of the study was to determine the human activities and the

economic status of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel. The researchers aimed to

determine if there was a significant relationship between perception of the residents of

Brgy. San Miguel on human activities and their economic status.

Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 alpha level:

Ho1. There was no significant relationship between perception of the residents of Brgy.

San Miguel on human activities and their economic status.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

This study was anchored on the theory of Lewis (2013) which stated that the

growth of output per head depends on the natural resources available and on the other

hand on human behavior. The poverty of natural resources set sharp limits of economic

status and that is a considerable part of differences in wealth between different countries

have to be explained in terms of richness in resources. But it is also clear that there are

great differences in development between countries which seem to have roughly equal

resources, so it is necessary to inquire into the differences in human activities which

influence economic status.

This was supported by Brown (2015) who said that human activities have the

biggest impact in economic status. Employment is the one factor that affects the

economy, on the other hand he append that great quality of the work gives great effect in

economy and the quality of the labor depends on proper education and work experience.

Page 5: Research Project V

Significance of the Study

The results of the study are beneficial to the following:

Barangay Officials. This study will give them awareness on the perception of the

residents of their barangay on human activities and its impact to their lives.

Residents of Brgy. San Miguel. This will give them understanding and

awareness about the human activities occurring in their community.

Community. This will provide the people of the community the understanding

they need about the human activities occurring and affecting their daily living.

Scope and Limitation

The study focuses on the level of perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel

on human activities and their economic status.

Definition of Terms

The key terms used in the study are defined as follows to give better

understanding.

Human Activities. This term means the affairs or businesses of people, which

they undertake for earning a living. This can also mean the habits that they manifest

either consciously or sub-consciously.

Residents of Brgy. San Miguel. It is defined as the settlers of Brgy. San Miguel,

Tagum City. In this study the residents of Brgy. San Miguel are the respondents.

Economic Status. This refers to the financial condition of the residents that

determine their level of sustainability in their day-to-day battle with life. In this study, it

refers to their perception of their own economic state.

Materials and Methods

This chapter discussed the research design, research respondents, research

instruments, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of the data.

Research Design

A descriptive-correlation technique was employed to describe the information

regarding the current condition because this was the most appropriate research design to

be used in this study as it involved correlation between perception of the residents of

Brgy. San Miguel on human activities and their economic status.

Research Subject

The respondents of this study were the 100 residents of Brgy. San Miguel, Tagum

City who were identified using the sloven’s formula. The researchers provided survey

questions that determined the perception on human activities and economic status in

Brgy. San Miguel. The respondents of the study were randomly selected.

Research Instruments

The instrument utilized in the study was a researcher made tool designed to draw

out information concerning the level of perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel

on human activities and their economic status. To regulate the item of the constructed

instrument, the material was validated by a group of experts.

Chapter 3

Results and Findings

This chapter presents, analyzes, and interprets the data gathered. The presentation

of results and discussion follows the sequence of the statement of the problem as stated in

chapter 1.

Level of Perception of the Residents of Brgy. San Miguel on Human Activities

The level of perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel on human activities

in this study was measured in terms of fiscal management and usage of resources. The

data of each indicator are presented and discussed below.

Fiscal Management. Presented in Table 2 are the responses of the respondents on

fiscal management. Computations revealed a mean score of 4.85 or very high for the item

live within their means; 4.35 or high for the item thrifty spending money only on things

practical and useful; 3.14 or moderate for the item set aside budget for savings before

determining how much shall spend; 4.84 or very high for the item allocating budget

basing on priorities/basic needs; 4.54 or very high for the item allocating budget on

expenditures or prime commodities ensuring no wastage and excess; and the overall

mean score of fiscal management is 4.34 or high.

Analysis of the data showed that the respondents reported the highest level of

perception on fiscal management with the item live within their means and this indicates

that the residents cutting their expenses so they have money left over at the end of each

month and they carefully budgeting their expenses to have a significant amount of money

left over each month. This also suggests that the residents are thinking of saving for their

future and they are aware of the difference between what they need and what they want.

Further analysis of the data showed that the least perceived of the fiscal management was

setting aside budget for savings before determining how much shall spend. This indicates

that most of the residents don’t think of having savings at the end of the month because

most of them are focusing on how to budget the money they have for the needs of their

family. The findings of the study is comparable with the findings of Liahona (2008), that

even the residents have positive perceptions on fiscal management, they must define the

path that is best for them and for their families and including the principle of stewardship

in their thinking and add a spiritual dimension to their moneymaking decisions.

Level of Economic Status of the Residents of Brgy. San Miguel

Presented in Table 3 is the summary of residents’ economic status by income

bracket. The responses of the residents were categorized by income bracket and the

results of the computations revealed an overall mean score of 1.21 or very low; 83 or

83% of the respondents have a monthly income of less than Php 10,000; 13 or 13% of the

respondents have a monthly income of Php 10,001 to Php 20,000; 3 or 3% of the

respondents have a monthly income of Php 20,001 to Php 30,000 and 1 or 1% of the

respondents have a monthly income of more than Php 30, 000.

Analysis showed that in every income bracket most of the residents have a

monthly income of less than Php 10, 000 which means that the level of economic status is

very low. This indicates that the residents are experiencing financial difficulties. It also

implies that the residents’ perception on their economic status is affected by the global

economic crisis which affects their daily living.

Usage of Resources. Table 4 presents the responses of the respondents on usage

of resources. Computations on usage of resources revealed a mean score of 4.83 or very

high for the item use water and other resources wisely to minimize water and electric

bills; 4.24 or high for the item make sure to exhaust the usage of a thing until it wears out

before buying a new one; 4.73 or very high for the item conserve energy at home by

putting off lights and other appliances when not in use; 4.26 or high for the item reuse

and recycle things as much as possible; 4.49 or high for the item using alternatives in the

use of electricity e.g. using improvised oven over commercial ones, coals, wood, etc.; and

the overall mean score of usage of resources was 4.51 or very high.

Analysis of the data showed that the respondents reported the highest level of

perception on usage of resources with the item use water and other resources wisely to

minimize water and electric bills and this suggests that the residents are using wisely the

water within the community to help achieve an environmentally sensitive place for them

to live. This also implies that using water efficiently also saves energy and reduce carbon

footprint which could help the environment. This indicates that water and conservation of

other resources is clearly an important component of sustainability. The findings of this

study is comparable with the findings of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (2010),

that the amount of water used per person per day for food production is nearly 510

gallons, for household energy production it's 465 gallons, direct use of household water

for drinking, bathing, laundry, watering yards, etc. accounts for only 100 gallons per day

and the amount of water used for producing electricity for each household is more than 4

times greater than the actual water used in each household.

Summary on the level of perception of the residents of Brgy.San Miguel on

human activities. Presented in table 5 is the summary on the level of perception of the

residents of Brgy. San Miguel on human activities. The overall mean score of the

residents’ perceptions on the human activities was 4.43 or high, with respect to its

indicators 4.34 or high for fiscal management and 4.51 or very high for usage of

resources.

Data revealed that the respondents held high perceptions on the human activities

which they undertake for earning a living and this means that the residents are aware on

how to manage their resources and control their budgets. This also suggests that the

residents’ shows act of responsibility in terms of managing their family finances. This

implies that the residents are wise on spending their money based on their priorities to

provide security and promote family well-being.

The findings of this study reflected on the idea of Mizell et al. (2014), that the

data revealed high interest in the practice of resource management and personal finance

principles. Residents believed that their knowledge about this topic increased upon

finishing the conducted survey and data revealed various impacts on residents’

perceptions.

Further, the findings was manifested by Heald et al. (2013) that respondents

portray themselves as actors’ not as passive recipient and learned that usage of resources

was regarded as one of the external pressures to be managed and its requirements largely

represented professional views of best practice. With this, residents’ perception shows

positive result on human activities because these human activities are the activities they

undertake in earning a living.

Page 19: Research Project V

Significant Relationship between Perception of the Residents of Brgy. San Miguel on Human Activities and their Economic Status.

Table 6 presents the results of the computations for the test of significant

relationship between perception of the residents of Brgy. San Miguel on human activities

and economic status. Pearson’s r was utilized to determine the significant relationship in

residents’ perception on human activities and economic status. Computation yielded an

r-value of 0.162 with a p-value of 0.108 or not significant for fiscal management and

economic status; r-value of 0.052 with an associated p-value of 0.608 or not significant

for usage of resources and economic status; and r-value of 0.131 with a corresponding

p-value of 0.194 or not significant for the overall human activities and economic status.

Analysis showed that the residents did not significantly vary in their perceptions

regarding on human activities and economic status. Data revealed that the residents were

experiencing financial difficulties and suffering from economic crisis with their respond

in their economic status. Overall, the residents’ shows positive perceptions on the human

activities they undertake every day that contributed in improving the way of their living.

The findings justified the assumption of Garasky et al. (2012) indicated that most

respondents do not feel able to handle their finances, yet believe that they are doing

relatively well financially. Perceived economic status was positively associated with

ability to complete daily living activities, cognitive ability, and psychological well-being

with results of differing institutional status. The resident’s perception on human activities

varies from one resident to another. On the other hand, the overall findings on the test of

significant relationship in the resident’s perceptions suggested that the residents were of

similar beliefs. The latter finding counteracted the former dissimilarity in perceptions of

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

The summary of findings conclusions and recommendations are presented in this

section. The data were obtained from the One Hundred (100) respondents using self-

constructed instruments.

Summary of Findings

The findings of the study were as follows:

1. The mean score for the economic status of the respondents was 1.21 or very low.

2. The computed mean score for economic status of the respondents in terms of fiscal

management was 4.34 or high, 4.51 or Very High in terms of Usage Resources and

the overall mean score for economic status of the respondents was 4.43 or High

Level.

3. The computed r-value for the correlation between perception on human activities and

economic status was 0.131 or significant.

Limitations and Advantages of the Study

This study has several limitations. First, the respondents of this study were the

residents of Brgy. San Miguel particularly in Purok 8, Laureta Homes. Second, the

research model was tested using a survey questionnaire to gather data regarding the

perception of the residents on human activities and economic status. Lastly, the study

consists of only two variables and doesn’t cover more variables.

This research will serve as means of imparting knowledge to any concern citizen

of the society about the perception of residents on human activities and economic status.

Page 23: Research Project V

This research can be used as a tool for increasing the level of awareness and

understanding about the human activities which the residents undertake in earning a

living.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn.

1. The level of perception on human activities of the respondents is high. This indicates

that the respondents are living with their means in terms of financial management is

high and high for usage resources. This finding suggests that the respondents should

provide savings due to financial difficulty. This gives an implication that the

respondents must know their priorities.

2. The level of economic status of the respondents is very low. This indicates that the

respondents are in deep state of crisis and this suggests that they have to adjust budget

and lifestyle to fit in reducing their income and increased expenses.

3. There is no significant relationship between human activities and economic status of

the respondents. This indicates further that the perception of the respondents on

human activities is not linked with their economic status.

Recommendation

Based on the following finding and conclusion, the following recommendations

are offered.

1. The Local Government Unit should make a step about the issue of crisis in their

localities. They should implement livelihood program especially to the people who

are deeply affected with poverty. Competency Training should be available to help

people and to provide their day to day battle with life.

Page 24: Research Project V

2. The Strategic Planning and Budgeting Program should imply to the families in their

localities. This helps them on how to budget towards providing accurate management

and timely data for decision making to be ready for financial difficulty.

3. The Local Government should lead those people and act as a spearhead to understand

the linkages of human activities and economic status. To barely improve the

capabilities of the lives of the people due to financial difficulty.
