to advance innovative clinical research and medical

of an established protocol, such as increasing the

frequency of oral hygiene on ventilator-dependent

patients to prevent deadly infections; or innovative

investigation into how the adhesive on the feet of

geckos might be used in ophthalmology surgeries; or

collaborating with academic institutions to develop a

safer polymer material for breast reconstruction surgery,

discovery and innovation at Summa Health System is a

Your support also enabled the purchase of equipment

to provide much-needed dental care to our area’s

developmentally disabled population at the Summa

Center for Dental Health and a renovation of the

Women’s Health Clinic, so underinsured and under-

served women in our region can receive medical

treatment and care in a more dignified setting.

Ongoing funding from our donors also helps bring

to our region nationally known presenters such as

Robert C. Like, MD, MS, professor and director of the

Center for Healthy Families and Cultural Diversity at

the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Actively

involved in research, Like provides training and techni-

cal assistance to physicians and medical staff about the

delivery of patient-centered, culturally responsive care

to diverse populations.

With your help, the Foundation presented the second-

annual Health Policy Summit, which focused on the

role of philanthropy in healthcare reform; hosted Ohio

Speaker of the House Armand D. Budish and State

Senator Tom Niehaus as part of our legislator leader-

ship series for Summa’s executives and management

teams; and worked to address healthcare workforce

development initiatives in the region.

The Foundation is able to encourage our researchers,

support our physicians and medical staff, and impact

the lives of our patients and their families because

of your generosity. In turn, efforts like these affect

our community and act as a catalyst for change in our

region. We are so grateful to our donors for your com-

SAPPHIRE BALLNearly 600 guests of Summa Health System gathered on September 12, 2009, at the John S. Knight Center in Akron for the ninth annual Sapphire Ball. Chaired by Summa Foundation board member Julia R. Bianchi, the dazzling event raised approximately $300,000 to refurbish Summa Health System’s Women’s Health Center at Summa Akron City Hospital. Savannah Brinson served as patron chair of the gala and attended the event with her partner, LeBron James.

The Summa Foundation provides support to a broad spectrum of innovative clinical research conducted at Summa Health System and through collaborative efforts with other institutions in the region. One cooperative project currently underway is research into using cells to grow cartilage outside the body that may eventually be used to treat osteoarthritis.

Research – $6.7M

As a major teaching hospital, Summa enhances its focus on medical education through support from the Summa Foundation. Summa’s continuing medical education program provides physicians with ongoing knowledge and skills they need to give patients the highest quality care and is accredited with commendation, the highest ranking awarded by the Ohio State Medical Association.

Medical Education – $1.3M

In keeping with our mission to provide the highest quality compassionate care to our patients, funding for capital improvements at Summa provides necessary equipment and facility updates, including new beds for increased comfort, a state-of-the-art MRI and the latest patient health monitors for the critical care unit.

Capital Improvements – $1.6M

Support for community outreach programming, such as the Summa Center for Dental Health, is a core tenet of the mission of Summa. In addition to medical screenings for diabetes, blood pressure and other health issues, outreach programs include wellness initiatives, health information seminars, and participation in community events.

Community Outreach Programming – $0.6M

2009 SUMMA FOUNDATION FINANCIAL SUMMARY We are deeply grateful to the more than 3,000 donors, volunteers, board members and friends of Summa Health System who made contributions last year in support of medical education, clinical research and innovation at Summa. As a result of philanthropic support received in 2009 and spendable income available from past philanthropic investments in the Foundation; revenue for 2009 totaled $18.9 million.

Central to our mission are four key areas of support: research, education, community outreach and capital improvements. The following examples are representative of our $13.5 million reinvestment into Summa Health System and the community in 2009.

Additionally, in December 2007, the Foundation’s board of directors endorsed deeper investments in three strategic areas beyond our annual operating allocations. Three one-million-dollar funds were created to strengthen Summa’s commitment to continued advancement in education, clinical research and innovation, and workforce development. Through 2009, nearly $1.5 million has been invested, allowing Summa to better compete for top medical talent in the region, build our clinical research capability, and significantly advance health career awareness – a strategic investment in healthcare that will positively impact the communities we serve for years to come.
