From the Chief Executive
Geoff PageC H I E F E X E C U T I V E
Since taking up the position of
Chief Executive earlier in the
year, I have been impressed by
the quality and variety of
research and scholarly activity
across the Institute. The
research programmes within
degree teaching departments
continue to develop well and this
has been commended by the
external monitors for these
programmes.
I regard staff involvement in
research and related scholarly
activity as critical to maintaining
excellence in teaching and
learning. It is essential that staff
remain at the cutting edge of
their discipline and that their
research publications contribute
to the relevant body of
knowledge. It is also important
for staff to engage in
consultancy work with industry
and the community and to
develop partnerships for the
purpose of research. Reference
to the important relationship that
has been established between
Industrial Research Limited,
WelTec and MIT as well as the
Genesis Consulting initiative is
included in the Report.
A major focus over the
coming year is to ensure that
resources are available to enable
staff to engage in research
whether they are involved in
teaching on degree level
programmes or teaching at
diploma and certificate levels.
One such resource is the
Institute’s Library and the Report
gives a brief update on its
developments in support of
research.
Collaborative research is
beneficial to staff and the
Institute and MIT staff continue
to be involved in cross-sector
initiatives. An example is the
formal relationship that has been
established between AUT’s
Diagnostics and Control
Research Centre and MIT’s
Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering.
I am pleased to present the
2004 Research Report and to
acknowledge the research
achievements of MIT staff,
together with the BE(Hons) level
students. I look forward to the
continued growth of research
and scholarship at MIT.
Geoff Page
Chief Executive

Dr Andrew Chalmers,
Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering, was the
first recipient of the newly
established award for research at
the MIT Distinguished Teachers
Award Ceremony.
Andrew is Senior Lecturer:
Research Development in the
Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering. His
award recognises the years of
extensive research he has carried
out into colour measurement,
colour reproduction systems and
digital image processing.
In 2004 Andrew was involved
in a joint project into conservation
lighting for the illumination of
museum antiquities. This is a
medium term project, the
ultimate purpose of which is to
produce a practical source for
museum lighting, having a colour
increased radiant efficacy (i.e.
more visible light per watt of
radiant energy). This type of
source will be very suitable for
the illumination, under
conservation conditions, of rare

artefacts and artworks. To
establish the acceptability of
these sources for museum use,
they will be subjected to rigorous
evaluation by a panel of
experienced viewers. A grant
was received from the Getty
Conservation Institute, USA, for
the research.
Andrew is designing a piece of
research equipment that will be
taken to the Getty Conservation
Institute by his research
collaborator, (Kit Cuttle of The
University of Auckland). This will
be used to assess the so-called
‘Spectra’ light-source concept
that Kit has developed.
MIT has been invited to act as
the primary contractor on the
project with Andrew as Project
Director and Kit Cuttle (UoA) as
Design Consultant and Chief
Researcher.
During the year Andrew was
also engaged in the writing of
two papers to be presented at
the Conference in Granada, Spain
in 2005;
“A case for a CIECAM02
colour appearance space”; co-
authors S Soltic and R
Jammalamadaka (both at MIT).
This will be given a high-profile
session to be chaired by M.D.
Fairchild of RIT (USA) who is the
acknowledged expert on colour
appearance models.

been actively involved in research
in partnership with industry and
the community. The following
outlines some of the initiatives:
Research and Development
Jumpstart is an initiative
between Industrial Research
Limited (IRL), Wellington Institute
of Technology (WelTec) and MIT
to provide research and
development assistance to small
to medium businesses (SME’s),
by connecting businesses with
the science and technology
capability in polytechnics and IRL.
Projects have been established
with eleven companies (14
projects). Students and
supervisors are getting involved in
activities such as embedded
control systems, optical imagery
and mechanical design through to
business process solutions.
SMEs benefit from receiving
assistance that they may not
otherwise have been able to
resource. MIT benefits through
providing:
• An enhanced learning
experience for students who
are able to work on real-world
issues while being exposed to
the business environment
• An opportunity for students
and academic staff to extend
into higher learning and
original research.
Genesis Consulting is a
marketing and advertising
consultancy service that provides
a work experience platform for
Business and Communication
Studies students. The final year
degree students gain experience
in serving commercial clients in a
consulting role.
Marketing research is
conducted on behalf of small to
medium sized business through
the greater Auckland area.
Research includes random-
sample telephone surveys and

Library Support for Research
The quality of Library provision is
a key component of developing a
research culture. This includes
the acquisition of appropriate
resources, the training and
development of staff, and the
communication of the Library
services available.
Over the year the suite of
databases was expanded to
include Emerald Fulltext, and
through the EPIC consortium,
Infotrac OnFile and other
associated databases including
Business and Industry and
Business and Management
Practices from Thomson Gale.
Searching for serial titles in the
Library’s print and electronic
serials collections through the
catalogue has become easier
with the installation of EBSCO’s A
to Z module. Interested lecturers
are shown how to take advantage
through e-mail of the on-line
alerts service provided by some
of the database vendors.
When research topics are
outside the scope of the Library’s
own resources, professional
library staff assist researchers
with sourcing and obtaining
material in NZ and overseas.

Hardware Image Processor for
Car Navigation by Machine Vision
A system based on an FPGA
was to be developed to determine
whether a lead car on a motorway
with a specific target is
accelerating, decelerating, moving
left, or moving right. This
information can be used to allow
the trailing car to follow the lead
car without human intervention.
The approach was to analyse a
series of still frames from a digital
camera mounted on the trailing
car. The image processing was
done in the FPGA to allow for real-
time processing.

Spectacle Fitting
This project is a continuation of
previous work and involves
implementing a 3D face modelling
technique using view morphing.
This provides image rotation to
allow the person to view their face
from different angles – and so gain
a better impression of their
appearance while wearing a
particular pair of glasses. Also
included are ways of internet
deployment and, if possible, to
deploy the working project on the
internet as a java applet.

Maya Graphics API
The main aim of this project
was to explore the Maya API, and
to extend its functionality by
adding plugins. The Maya API
gives access to Maya’s internal
core, which makes it a powerful
tool to add new functionalities to
Maya. Maya’s user interface is
written in MEL (Maya Embedded
Language). In order to maximize
Maya’s extensibility, it was
necessary to understand and use
MEL and its API together.

OpenGL Graphics Language
OpenGL is an emerging
graphics standard that is used for
high performing graphics
applications. Its device-
independency has made OpenGL
a widely accepted API that
provides advanced rendering
features. This low level graphics
API provides the facility for
programmers to develop simple
and complex models easily and
efficiently. The aim of this project
was to characterize the features
of OpenGL and demonstrate each
of the major features with a
collection of working examples.

DirectX Media Technology
DirectX is a group of
technologies that are used to
develop games and animations.
The newer versions of DirectX also
support 3D features and provide a
platform for developing complex
3D graphics and animations. This
is a Microsoft standard and is used
in game consoles like the ‘Xbox’.
It also supports features like
sounds in games, multi-players
over networks and a wide variety
of input devices like keyboard,
mouse or joysticks. The aim of
this research was to investigate
the different features offered by
DirectX and put them to practical
use in the development of games
and animations.
