Research Report.Why and What I am doing.For this project I have decided to create a Music Video because out of all of the mediums (Print, Radio, Television and Film) I feel as though I need to boost my confidence with Filming and Editing and this for me would be a good idea.The genre of the music video is Contemporary Folk and this means that the music is very slow and the music videos tend to be quite dark and with a melancholy atmosphere which creates empathy towards either the character in the video or towards the artist singing the song. I chose this topic, as after weighing up pros and cons of other ideas and topics I could not find an idea I felt strong enough to produce.

Audience profiles.

Research.I decided to research 2 different styles of the same song (sung by 2 different artists) because then I can get a better understanding of the genre of music and style of video that I would like to produce and how I can do this effectively.I discovered when doing this research that the music videos themselves tend to be quite dark and with a melancholy atmosphere which creates empathy towards either the character in the video or towards the artist singing the song.I also found that the visuals tend to run smoothly and relate to the music put with it.

Survey Results I created a survey to collect data from multiple people to gather what exactly I can achieve in this project. The data I collected would help me when it comes to researching and producing my Music Video. I got input as to what content people want and what kind of style of video they want and what they will watch it on most.

“What is your age?” Was my second question. I decided on this question because it will give me more of an understanding as to who will watch or listen to the music video and the style it would be. However when creating the questions I forgot to add an ‘under 18’ category so my results aren’t as accurate as I would’ve hoped. A majority of the people who answered my survey was between the ages of 18 and 24 which means that most of my content will be looked at for a slightly more mature view than if I’d have asked a 14 year old.

I then asked, “What’s your favourite genre of Music Video?” I decided on this question because I wanted to get a sense of what people are interested and how I could make my music video more appealing. I had a varied amount of results from this question which means I can make the video as diverse as possible. The most popular answers were “Drama”, “Comedy” and “Horror”. This will help me when I come to making my Video because I get an understanding of what is current and liked and to make something diverse.

I tried to make all of my questions as helpful to my project and as beneficial as

possible so I asked “In your opinion, what makes a good Music Video?” Most of the people that replied to this question said that a storyline is vital and in my opinion I would agree. However, they also said that choreography is important so I have

to be careful when recording my video.

I created the question “How do you watch Music Videos?” to get a sense of what the most popular site was and to help me when releasing my video on the World Wide Web. Everyone (from an 8 people survey) responded with YouTube, this means that I can share my video easily and quickly.

Overall I thought that the survey was very helpful to my research because I feel it gives me a better understanding of what people want to see and what is relevant to the age group. I will continue to use Surveys in the future to get a better understanding of what the audience want to see.

Mind Map

I decided to create a mind map to help me piece together my ideas, weigh up the Pros and Cons of each idea to then come up with a final idea, which was my Music Video idea. I felt this was the most effective way to do this as this looks into what I am good at and what I know and can/can’t achieve. I kept it short and sweet and it didn’t take me long to choose an idea.
