Scholars in general use research

writing, academic writing and scientific

writing interchangeably or sometimes in

synonymous. Although it shares some

similarities, there is a subtle difference in the

usage based on its application.

Research Writing: Any Writing that

involves extensive research can be primary or

secondary like in any subject (e.g.

Management) conducted in a particular field

of study (Banking) focusing on a specific

problem (challenges in funding MSME: lack of

an innovative financial model for funding

MSMEs in India). The reason for the research

is to identify the appropriate solution or

strategies to overcome the problem based on

the systematic investigation. The proposed

solution can be applied to that Industry.

Therefore, research writing is the term mostly

used in industries in the form of research

reports and white papers. Survey findings

were commonly used to identify a solution to

the particular problem being faced by the

firms /industries or to determine the need for

the market. Further, Writing involves the

usage of English that resembles everyday

English or use of informal English.

The term ‘academic’, usually centred

on colleges and universities where it

represents scholar at an institution of higher

learning such as a university. Academic

writing involves scholarly writing were a

culture that values writing as an essential

process by which individual develop scholarly

knowledge, practical wisdom and critical

thinking skills. The purpose is mostly used to

obtain a scholarly degree (Bachelor’s,

Master’s or Ph.D.). The style of academic

writing involves in-depth research, follows

stringent methodology thereby demands

certain structure and logical. The style of

writing requires a lexicon that is different

from everyday English, thus demands formal-

sounding alternatives to increase the writing

clarity. Apart from that, it also includes field-

specific terms, jargons that are Greek and

Latin to someone outside the field of study.

The academic writing is published in high

impact journals, books or thesis form based

on the innovative concept being perceived by

the scholar after some form of peer review or

editorial referring to quality.

Scientific Writing is writing for

science, which means, the writing focuses on

science and technology based subjects

including the most rapid advancement in

history, genetics, biotechnology to

extraordinary discoveries in astrophysics. The

research conducted by the scientists are

reported and communicated in high-quality

peer-reviewed scientific journals. Typically,

pharmaceutical firms involve in the scientific

writing process.

Although the purpose of

communication and structure of the report

varied across all the terms, as a common all

the three has research as the base. Without

in-depth analysis, it can be primary (by

conducting qualitative interview or surveys, or

observation or laboratory studies) or

secondary research, the research is not

complete nor been communicated.
