RESERVOIR PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER No. 14 September 5th 2018
FUNDRAISING AT BUNNINGS: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! It’s on this Sunday 9th September – our turn to have the barbecue at Bunnings at Thomastown (Dalton Road). We would of course be keen for parents to volunteer an hour or two on that day. Please let us know if you can help out for a small part of the day! Our music students will be performing there; a great opportunity!
Some photos of last year’s trip to Bunnings
With only three weeks of term remaining, we have inter-school soccer, kanga cricket games still to come, PIT Gymnastics to complete for junior classes, and already we are sending out notes about swimming and our inter-school sporting program in term four. How the year has flown! Teacher planning takes place next week, and in the last week of term our Book Week celebrations! Our much-anticipated Book Character Parade is on Thursday 20th September. We are hoping for a lovely start to the day, so we can hold the event outdoors. So all those beautiful princesses and dashing pirates had better make sure they also wear something warm over their costumes. During recent weeks, the students have enjoyed some exciting activities during their lunch times. I know the Drawing Club was popular by the long line at the door of Room 3. Indoor Games and the “Fitness Club” – including the Beep Test were a real hit, as was the open Library three days each week. We will continue to have “clubs” offered throughout the year for those interested in some different things to do. A Science Investigating Club is imminent. And as the days become warmer, it’s a reminder that in Term Four, we will all have to dig out our school hats! Helen Miller Principal
PREP ENROLMENTS Do you have, or know a child who turns five by the end of April 2019? If so, they are eligible to begin school in February next year. Please complete an enrolment form and return it to our office. Our Transition program is in November; but please return enrolment forms as soon as possible. We do like to have the numbers organised so that classes, staffing and planning for the start of the year can be can be underway well before the end of the year.
‘Birthday Greetings’ to the following students who are celebrating a birthday in the next two weeks: Ahmed S., Hirday, Miller, Katherine, Alex, Roberta, Lucas A., John, Gene and Ritviksinh.

FOOTY COLOURS DAY!
Reservoir Primary students will show their true colours on Footy Colours Day to make sure kids with cancer achieve the same educational milestones as their peers. Football unites people, whether it’s AFL, NRL, A League, Rugby Union or any other code. On Thursday 13th September, support kids living with cancer. Dress in your team’s colours and donate a gold coin. This money will support programs to provide dedicated teachers who support up to 26 learners aged between 3 and 18 years through their fight against cancer. Thank you for showing your true colours and uniting in the fight against cancer in 2018. Young Leaders/Junior School Councillors and Maria Mirasgentis.

2018 Book Character Parade When: Thursday 20th September 2018
Time: 9:15 am It’s time to get excited for the annual Book Character Parade. The parade is a big event where children and teachers dress in costume to represent a favourite book character. Book Week celebrations are important because it reminds everyone that books offer more than just a good story. Literature can act as a source of knowledge, a vehicle to other places, a means to peer into the past and future and so much more. Costumes for our ‘Book Character Parade’ could be made from just simple pieces of clothing or items you may have at home e.g. belts, scarves, hats, headbands, boxes, leggings to name a few. We prefer that parents don’t use hired costumes. It’s much more fun when we make them with love and with your child in mind. We are really excited to see our community come together to celebrate Book Character Parade. Be creative and see you soon! Thank you for your support. Staff

The Best Trampoline Parks in Melbourne
Bounce off the walls at these indoor trampolining parks
Unless you're game to jump out of an aeroplane, hitting up an indoor
trampoline park is probably as close as you’ll ever get to flying. Take
the challenge and jump around at these indoor trampoline parks across
Melbourne.
Latitude
Heidelberg West
Boasting over an acre of indoor aerial activities, Latitude offers a world of aerial entertainment for little
kids and big kids alike. There’s more than 100 interconnected trampolines, a performance area, a giant
airbag, dodgeball courts and basketball lanes in this indoor centre. After you bounce, go for a round of
climbing at Latitude’s rock climbing walls or tackle the six-section sky-high obstacle course. There’s fun
for the littlest bouncers too with Latitude’s dedicated Kids Zone, designed for kids aged 18 months to
five years.
Bounce: Essendon
Essendon Fields
Bounce – the springy land of pure joy – is an indoor trampoline park
inside an impressive heritage-listed hangar. You've got dodgeball
courts, basketball hoops and giant airbags, but in addition, the
Essendon location is the first to get the one and only Supertramp. Yep,
this five-metre monster is the biggest in Australia. Also available in
Glen Iris and Blackburn North.
Rush HQ
Rowville
Rush HQ packs a lot in: there’s the central trampoline area, four
trampoline catwalks that lead to basketball slam dunk areas, a
dodgeball court and super-fun foam pits to plunge yourself into.
After jumping, visitors can try Mount Madness, a high-octane
climbing wall that cantilevers above a foam pit, or the Gauntlet, a
two-tiered obstacle course set above the ground.
Xtreme Air
Keysborough
This place well and truly lives up to its name. With wall-to-wall
trampolines, a foam pit and dodge ball trampolines, Xtreme Air is
Melbourne’s largest trampoline centre. A great venue for jumpers of
all ages, it has a large free jump court featuring more than 60
interconnected trampolines as well as six foam pit lanes, three
dodgeball courts and four slam dunk lanes. Let this place be your
go-to for family events, birthday parties, corporate events and
more.
Airborn Indoor Trampoline Park
Coolaroo
With over 1,300 square metres of custom made trampolines spread across the floors and walls, Airborn
has something for everyone. You may even like to launch yourself into Airborn’s blown up airbag!
Why we require proper footwear in P.E.
For students own safety when coming to PE the expectation is that students are wearing appropriate shoes as it is essential for physical activity. Sometimes children’s footwear is chosen based upon what is aesthetically pleasing rather than what is best for safety and efficient movement. Style is often the major reason a particular pair of shoes is purchased (French, Kinnison, & Silliman-French, 2009), and are often not suitable for physical activity. Please understand that the necessity of wearing proper shoes is 100% instruction and safety driven. What an ideal PE shoe looks like: -Shoe fits the foot, not slipping out -Shoe has a back where heel is not exposed -Shoe has an appropriate bottom/sole where running or other physical activity will not hurt the foot. Ride2school August 2018 The morning of our Ride2School day proved to be mostly clear with light winds and morning frost. The sun peeped through the clouds and helped keep us warm. A few extra accessories would have helped whilst walking to school such as scarves, beanies and gloves. Not a bad idea to end the last few week of winter yet the lowest recorded temperature for this time of the year. An increased number of parents are choosing to drive their kids to school even when it’s easily within walkable distance. Children who live within 1-2 kilometres of school are likely to walk but even that number is decreasing. Parents are really nervous about letting their kids walk. While their concerns are understandable, it’s also sad because many kids are missing out on the benefits of walking to school. There are many potential benefits of physical activity for our youth including: Weight and blood pressure control Bone, muscle and joint health maintenance Reduction in the risk of diabetes Improved psychological welfare Better academic performance Here is an overall ‘Hands up Survey” for our students on the morning of Tuesday 28th of August 2018.

Improving the health and wellbeing of Australian children by making movement a
part of everyday life
Children (5-12 years)
Being physically active is good for kids’ health, learning and physical, social and emotional development. Physical Activity Recommendations For health benefits, children aged 5–12 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day. Children’s physical activity should include a variety of aerobic activities, including some vigorous intensity activity. On at least three days per week, children should engage in activities that strengthen muscle and bone. To achieve additional health benefits, children should engage in more activity – up to several hours per day. Sedentary Behaviour Recommendations To reduce health risks, children aged 5-12 years should minimise the time they spend being sedentary every day. To achieve this: Limit use of electronic media for entertainment (e.g. television, seated electronic games and computer use) to no more than two hours a day – lower levels are associated with reduced health risks. Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible.
