GREATER HAMILTON REGION
1. PETER FRANCIS POINTS ARBORETUM (COLERAINE)
Once the site of an abandoned quarry and rubbish dump with only one surviving tree, ‘The Points’, is now home to the official Eucalyptus collection of Australia. It features walking trails, picturesque views and tranquil picnic places.
2. WANNON AND NIGRETTA FALLS
Just 20km west of Hamilton, lie two exceptional waterfalls, Nigretta and Wannon Falls. The Wannon Falls, created by lava flows that surged upstream to the Wannon River, feature a spectacular thirty metre vertical
precipice of hardened basalt lava over which water cascades into a deep plunge pool below. Further downstream, rapids wind their way around large blocks of basalt, dislodged over time down the embankments of the narrow valley. A cantilevered viewing platform at the Wannon Falls offers spectacular views and a rotunda features interpretative signage for visitors, covering geology, flora and fauna, Koori history and details of colonial artists who painted in the area.
Nigretta Falls has excellent viewing areas, river walks, free barbeque facilities with red gum picnic tables, toilets, fishing areas and a jarrah timber stairway leading to the base of the falls.
3. BYADUK CAVES
Mt Napier State Park also takes in the Byaduk Caves, considered to be the most extensive and accessible set of lava caves in Australia. The caves were formed when lava flowing from the volcanic crater was quickly cooled by outside air, forming a crust with hot liquid lava flowing beneath. When the lava flow
ceased, a hollow tube was left behind. The largest caves are 18 metres wide, 10 metres high and extend 20 metres below the surface. Walking tracks follow cave edges and have a number of viewing points to observe flora, fauna and lava features.
4. LAVA BLISTERS (TUMULI)
West of the Byaduk Caves, near the limits of the Harmans Valley flow are a number of unusual clusters known as Lava Tumuli or ‘Blisters’. Lava Tumuli are clusters of unusual circular mounds or hummocks of rock, up
to 10 metres high and 20 metres in diameter, caused by the lava flow. The Lava Tumuli can be seen along the edge of the Harmans Valley flow at Wallacedale, 13 kilometres west of the Byaduk Caves.
5. HARMAN’S VALLEY LOOKOUT
The Harmans Valley Lookout provides the unique opportunity to view remnants from volcanic activity believed to have occurred less than 10,000 years ago. Australia’s youngest volcano, Mount Napier overlooks the
remains of the river of lava that reached as far as the sea between Port Fairy and Portland.
6. MT ROUSE (PENSHURST)
Twenty minutes east of Hamilton, lies the town of Penshurst, home to the extinct volcano Mt Rouse. To the south of the main scoria cone is a deep circular crater with a small lake contained within a shallow, basalt rimmed crater. Past lava flows from Mt Rouse followed shallow, gently sloping river courses, extending at least
60 kilometres south. A thin basalt lava flow contained in the scoria cone has been dated approximately 1.8 million years old. The Mt Rouse summit provides panoramic views of the lava plain and surrounding district.

TOWNS IN THE REGION
TARRINGTONThe small village of Tarrington is situated to the south east of Hamilton. The town was established by German settlers who arrived in 1853 and quickly established themselves as farmers. Formally known as Hochkirch, this area is quickly becoming a well known “pinot noir” grape producing area within the Henty wine region.
7. VOLCANOES DISCOVERY CENTRE (PENSHURST)
Situated at the base of Mount Rouse in Penshurst, the Centre interprets how volcanoes are formed, their geology, their history in Western Victoria, a video simulation of Mt Rouse
erupting, the interaction of the Koori people with volcanoes, and an educational program aimed at school children. Open 10am to 4pm - Friday, Saturday and Sunday, school and public holidays.
8. DUNKELD ABORETUM
The Dunkeld Arboretum is a community project based at the old Water Reserve. There are over 7000 trees in the reserve, including the second largest collection of oaks in Australia. The Old Reservoir Walk follows the creek at the bottom of town, below the hotel, taking in the
arboretum, the sawmill, the labyrinth and other natural sights. This is an easy walk suitable for all ages and takes approximately 40 minutes.
9. GRAMPIANS NATIONAL PARK WALKS
The Grampians National Park offers spectacular walking opportunities only minutes north of Dunkeld. Mt Abrupt (2.5-3hrs) Mt Sturgeon (2.5-3hrs) are ideally suited for the fit and energetic walker, both providing panoramic
views of the surrounding ranges. The Piccaninny (1hr) is a gradual climb through open forest with the summit providing excellent views of the Dunkeld township and surrounding farmlands.
10. SETTLERS WALK (CAVENDISH)
Established as a memorial to the Solider Settlers, the mid 50’s pioneers, ‘Settlers Walk’ brings our past back to life via brief stories on plaques affixed to volcanic rocks situated along
the river. Entrance to the walk is through the garden beside the Police Station. A plaque can be seen as you enter through the hand gate. Settlers Walk provides picnic areas and pleasant pathways with wheelchair accessibility.
11. ROCKLANDS RESERVOIR AND THE BLACK RANGE STATE PARK
The Rocklands and Black Range area is a picturesque block of public land, rich in flora, fauna and history. Lying to the west of the Grampians National Park, the area includes the Black Range State Park, Rocklands Reservoir,
Claude Austin State Forests and many smaller reserves. The area is popular for a wide range of outdoor activities including camping, fishing, boating, horse riding, bushwalking and nature study.
KANAWINKA GEOTRAIL
Wannon and Nigretta Falls, Mt Eccles, Mt Napier, Mt Rouse, Byaduk Caves and the Lava Tumuli (blisters) are all part of the Kanawinka Geotrail encompassing western Victoria and south-east South Australia.
Volcanic eruptions began in this area approximately 20,000 years ago and continued until approximately 8,000 years ago. The volcanic plains which encompass western Victoria and south east Australia rank as Australia’s most extensive volcanic province.
MT ECCLES NATIONAL PARK
Situated 45km (1/2 hour) south of Hamilton, Mt Eccles is surrounded by 6120 hectares of national park and boasts Victoria’s highest koala population and largest Manna Gum woodland - koala’s favourite food.
Three main craters at Mt Eccles hold the waters of Lake Surprise, a body of water around 800 metres long and 300 metres deep.
The park has well developed walking trails for visitors to enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna, fascinating volcanic formations and interesting lava caves.
GREATER HAMILTON REGION
