one of our most valuable assets at susquehanna health is the Williamsport

Family medicine residency. this hidden gem has been attracting, training and

retaining quality physicians for the past 40 years. Accepting just seven out of

more than 800 applicants each year, the highly selective residency Program

brings the very best of the best right here to serve our community. in nearly

four decades, the residency Program has graduated 240 family physicians,

with more than half of those graduates staying in Pennsylvania, and almost 60

physicians continuing to practice right here in our region.

our residency Program is nationally ranked for its family medicine training

and is specifically sought after for training family physicians in obstetrics.

Family medicine residents are attracted to our completely integrated

curriculum and full access to patients and services without competition of

other residency programs. residents are trained by family medicine faculty

but also have the chance to work with and learn from other specialists within

What makes the program

so valuable is not just the

opportunities it provides residents

the community. the Williamsport

Family medicine residents are

responsible for many advancements

and services susquehanna health

provides for our community.

Beyond supporting our family

medicine doctors, they make

their own local impact through

volunteerism. recently, a team

of residents developed a support

group for women who have

experienced a miscarriage in their

second or third trimester.

residents also volunteer within our

schools to teach our teens about the

dangers of drugs and alcohol and

to provide support for high school

sporting events. those interested

in sports medicine are drawn to

Williamsport and can serve as a team

physician during the Little League

World series. in addition to these

services, residents also run a

pre-natal clinic for underinsured

women, a public std clinic and a

free clinic at st. Anthony’s center.

the residency Program provides

top-quality education and

experience to these physicians, and,

in turn, susquehanna health attracts

and retains the best family physicians

to care for our community.

Access to a higher level of healthcare would have never

Outgrowing the Current Facility

rapidly advancing technology and the growing

patient population have caused the program to

outgrow its cramped quarters in the basement level

of the Williamsport regional medical center’s 699

rural Avenue medical office Building. Although

the residents perform to and exceed national “best

practice” standards, the facility does not meet those

high requirements.

New Facility, Renewed Hope

the Continuing the Innovation Capital Campaign

includes the construction of a state-of-the-art clinical

and teaching facility for the Family medicine residency.

the new facility puts residents at the heart of the

community they serve, allowing more space for

collaboration and group care through diabetes and

pregnancy clinics.

the center will help further the residency Program’s

increasing participation in research, training initiatives

and collaborative projects with prestigious medical

institutions. in turn, the residency Program inspires

the rest of the medical staff to explore the latest

healthcare trends.

regional medical center for the

newly renovated and expanded

Emergency department. the

event paid tribute to Donald B. and

Dorothy L. Stabler as well as the

former Honorable Judge Malcolm

Muir. the donald B. and dorothy

L. stabler Foundation contributed

$3 million to the renovation and

expansion of the Emergency

department and named the area

in honor of donald’s cousin, Judge

Malcolm Muir.

“his legacy was truth and fairness,”

says Sister Teresa Ann Jacobs,

director of sponsorship for the

sisters of christian charity. it is

only fitting that this department,

serving those who are most in

need, will bear Judge malcolm

muir’s name. he left a legacy

of traditional moral values and

a genuine passion for helping

others. Within this legacy, the

donald B. and dorothy L. stabler

Foundation saw its mission and

values reflected. “don would be

proud that his Foundation could

perpetuate Judge muir’s memory,”

says Sherill T. Moyer, Esquire,

The Kathryn M. Freeman Race for Ovarian Cancer is building awareness of ovarian cancer and raising funds to help women become empowered in their healthcare. The event is a ray of light that emerged from sadness when this beloved wife and mother’s life ended too soon.

Kathryn was devoted to her family. She was kind and non-judgmental toward everyone—strangers and friends. Her daughter Kimberly’s friends teased that a visit to her family farm in the Williamsport area was like staying at a bed and breakfast because Kathryn made them feel at home with great food and pampering.

She took care of everyone, but like so many women, she was slow to address her own health concerns. By the time she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it had progressed to stage 4. She passed away in June 2010.

A few months before Kathryn died, Kimberly was running in her first half-marathon on a miserable, cold, rainy day. About halfway through the race, Kimberly began thinking about her mother and wishing Kathryn could cheer her

on like she did when Kimberly ran track at Loyalsock Township High School. Glancing at the sky she noticed a single crack in the clouds where light was trying to make its way through. In that moment Kimberly felt as if her mother was pushing through all the negativity—illness, bad weather, the difficult run—to be with her.

To Kimberly, that beam of light symbolized how Kathryn was in life—a small bright spot prevailing over darkness. So when her mother’s life ended, Kimberly wanted to do something positive in her memory and established the race, a half-marathon and five-mile walk. She includes information about ovarian cancer on the race website and invites people to write about their experiences with the disease. She hears from survivors as well as those who have lost beloved women in their lives to the disease. These interactions affirm Kimberly’s desire to encourage women to put their healthcare needs in the forefront.

After a successful first race in November 2011, the 2012 event grew both in the number of participants and in

fundraising strength because runners and walkers were encouraged to solicit donations. Kimberly was pleased to see people run and walk in honor and memory of individuals who had ovarian cancer as well as have survivors participate. The 2012 event yielded a little more than $17,500, which was given to Susquehanna Health’s Spirit of Women program to use toward a guest speaker for Girls’ Night Out in October 2013. This event, along with future programs, will provide hundreds of women the opportunity to learn more about the causes, symptoms, treatment plans and prevention of ovarian cancer.

The national Spirit of Women program came to Susquehanna Health in 2011. It’s a free membership program available to women of all ages and aimed at helping them gain valuable, even lifesaving, information to manage their health and become informed healthcare consumers. Girls’ Night Out, one of Spirit of Women’s signature events, is an October evening event that combines health education and screenings with fun and pampering.

“The big thing with mom was that she knew something was wrong, but she didn’t take time for herself. She was always worried about everyone else,” Kimberly explains. “There aren’t many programs in the area aimed at empowering

women in their healthcare, but Spirit of Women is all about educating women and having them be proactive. I thought this was a great way to honor my mother.”

Kimberly, who just completed her first marathon, still thinks of her mother every time she runs. She plans to continue holding the race each November and hopes she can garner a team of volunteers to help with the growing fundraising event.

“Losing a mother is horrible. To know that we are raising awareness about ovarian cancer and encouraging women to be aware of their bodies and to take the first step to see their doctor when there’s a problem, then that is something positive that can come out of it,” she says.

Ask Dr. Joseph English about his impressive contributions to Susquehanna Health and the Williamsport community, and he’s quick to point out that it was all possible because of the support and strength of his wife.

“Ginny has really done the lion’s share of the work,” says Dr. English. “While I was attending meetings or getting called into work, she was raising five kids and up to her neck in Boy Scout and Girl Scout activities. She has also been an outstanding volunteer in the community and has met every challenge in a very, very positive way.”

Born and raised in Williamsport, Dr. English returned to what he calls the most beautiful area in the world in 1963. A graduate of Bucknell University, he earned his medical degree at Temple University, completed active duty in Korea for the United States Army and was ready to set up a family practice while caring for his aging parents. He met Ginny at Williamsport Hospital, now Williamsport Regional Medical Center, the setting for many great events in his life including the births of their five children, Linda, Andrew, David, Christopher and Patrick, and the place where he has enjoyed a very long and successful career.

Over the years Dr. English and his wife have made financial contributions to the health system and recently made a Caduceus Society gift to support new building and renovation projects.

system provide excellent medical care, and so many different kinds of medical care. There are specialties here for just about everything, and we do it very well,” says Dr. English. “Steve Johnson [Susquehanna Health President & CEO] is excellent at watching the progression in medicine across the nation and ensuring that we are providing the most up-to-date care right here.”

Dr. English knows something about creating new healthcare services for the community. In 1970, he and five other physicians collaborated to provide 24-hour emergency coverage for the community and started the Emergency Department at Williamsport Hospital. He became Vice President and Medical Director of Williamsport Hospital in 1992, serving on the administration team when the hospital merged with Divine Providence Hospital and Muncy Valley Hospital to become Susquehanna Health.

“Certainly during that time we were at the forefront of change,” says Dr. English recalling the merger. “It was such a great decision. It was very inefficient having three hospitals competing in the same small area, and when we came together it made things

easier for the community. It helped cut costs and gave people many more opportunities to have medical services. It really opened up a larger number of facilities to the population here and with so many specialties and programs including free screenings and other health activities.”

A year after the merger, Dr. English left administration and worked solely

in the Emergency Department. In recent years he has provided occupational health services two to five days a week for Susquehanna Health’s WorkCenter, a service area that’s growing due to the demand for healthcare created by the Marcellus Shale Industry.

In addition to his contributions to the medical community, Dr. English has served his country and his community. After retiring from the Army Reserves with 26 years of service, he joined the Navy and served in Operation Desert Storm, remaining in the Navy Reserves for an additional 10 years. He has been an active volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America for 68 years and has served the Thomas Taber Museum, the Lycoming Historical Society, Kiwanis and his church.

His entire family shares a love of the outdoors. They are avid downhill skiers who have all been active with the National Ski Patrol as well as ski instructors and ski racers. He and Ginny are looking forward to getting back out in the snow after successful knee replacement surgeries at

Susquehanna Health. They also enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, snowmobiling, snorkeling and visits with their eight grandchildren.

“I’ve had a very exciting life, a very good and long life, and with my wonderful wife by my side, I’ve been able to do a lot of things,” Dr. English explains.

A three-season athlete from Warrior

run high school in turbotville, Micah Watts attended susquehanna health’s

Basic and Advanced Athletic trainers'

Workshops as a sophomore and

junior in 2005 and 2006. now micah

works as an outreach Athletic trainer

for the sports medicine center that

gave him his start.

Athletic trainers' Workshops are

week-long educational day camps for

students at the 14 area school districts

served by the sports medicine center,

as well as other interested school

districts. the 21-year-old program

has inspired more than 50 students

to pursue careers in sports medicine

and athletic training. others have

gained skills to help their school’s

certified athletic trainer while learning

the basics of how to prevent and treat

sports injuries.

“We’re really proud of the program,”

says Mike Ludwikowski, ms, Atc,

coordinator of outreach Athletic

training services and staff Athletic

trainer, who developed the Workshop.

“With so many other types of camps,

we’ve survived the test of time.”

First-year students earn cPr

certification while learning about

anatomy and common injuries,

including concussions, as well as

taping techniques. they also take a

field trip to Lock haven university’s

sports medicine/health science

facilities. the advanced students build

on their skills and delve into more

intensive injuries and rehabilitative

techniques. At each level, participants

receive a college-level textbook.

the sports medicine center’s

outreach athletic trainers lead the

Workshops. “there’s a lot that we

cover, but we keep the pace up and

make it fun with quiz games that help

to reinforce what we’re teaching,”

mike says.

A majority of the funding is raised

through the annual Susquehanna

health sports medicine coaches

invitational Golf tournament and the

Foundation’s Wish List (page 26).

Participating high schools benefit

from the Workshops as their outreach

athletic trainers gain skilled assistants

to support athletes in up to 16 PiAA

interscholastic sports. students are

exposed to careers in athletic training,

emergency medical training, physical

therapy and orthopedics. mike has

also connected interested participants

with professionals for shadowing and

internships.

micah’s second Workshop convinced

him to study athletic training. When

he began classes at Lock Haven

university, he felt his experience

gave him an advantage. he also

valued the connections that he made

with both students and certified

Athletic trainers. As a student athlete,

he knew who to go to with an injury

at another school.

micah is thankful for his opportunity

with the student Athletic trainers'

Workshops and that his connection

with mike helped him break into the

profession. he looks forward to giving

back by helping at the Workshops that

got him started in a career he enjoys.

telehealth monitoring provides doctors a

daily snapshot of the patient’s condition as

they recover from a recent hospital stay or

learn to regulate their chronic condition

at home. not only does the technology

allow doctors to detect subtle health

changes that could lead to larger issues,

but it assists patients in becoming more

independent in their home healthcare.

With the help of this technology, doctors

are more able to prevent re-hospitalization

and emergency room visits, promote

healthy diet and activities, and modify

medications in order to heal patients

faster. the interactive home monitoring is

primarily for patients with congestive heart

failure or pulmonary disease but can now

be used for individuals with heart disease

or expectant mothers experiencing high

blood pressure.

How it Works

telehealth monitoring utilizes equipment

such as a telephone or satellite

connection, a monitor the size of a

calculator and a scale. A home care

nurse evaluates the patient and their

home environment before setting up the

system to ensure it can be used safely and

successfully. Patient participation in daily

monitoring is essential, but patients will

also receive weekly home visits as part of

their complete healthcare services.

the monitor will prompt patients in a

friendly voice to begin their daily five-

minute assessment and then proceed to

check their vital signs, blood pressure,

pulse, weight and blood/oxygen levels.

It will also ask the patient a series

of questions based on their current

condition. Each answer the patient gives

determines the next question, until the

assessment is complete. data gathered by

the telehealth monitor is transmitted to a

web-based system monitored by a nurse

seven days a week, including holidays.

Attention 24/7

the benefit of telehealth monitoring is

that it’s not limited to scheduled daily

assessments. Patients who are not feeling

quite right can use the monitor at any

time, day or night, to confirm all vital signs

are on track.

through the monitoring system,

home care service providers can also

remind and confirm that patients have

taken their medication and alert them

of other situations, such as severe

weather conditions.

telehealth monitoring gives patients

peace of mind in all aspects of their

healthcare, from letting them know they

are progressing to helping them build

confidence in their independent care

ability. susquehanna health home care

& hospice patients who have received

these telehealth monitoring systems are

“We are a very broad, caring group.

We are here to help the community—

that’s one of our main goals,”

says Alesandria “Sandy” Hughes,

treasurer and responsible officer.

many of the club’s 700 members,

ranging in age from 23 to 85, have

benefited from the services of

Susquehanna Health Home Care &

hospice, the Gatehouse (inpatient

hospice unit) and the Kathryn

candor Lundy Breast health center.

Each of those services has received

numerous gifts from the club over

the years. the club recently made a

$1,000 gift to support susquehanna

health home care & hospice, $500

to support the Breast health center

and another $1,000 to help with

renovations at the Gatehouse.

“Any financial assistance we can offer

to organizations that help to maintain

quality of life for those suffering, that

is what we are about, and we are

happy to participate,” sandy says.

“We have two employees who are

breast cancer survivors, and many

of our members have experienced

the dreaded disease in the form of

breast cancer, prostate, ovarian and

lung cancer, including me; so, we

are very connected to the services

provided by susquehanna health

hospice, the Gatehouse, Breast

health center and cancer center.”

“As a survivor, who has been

through the cancer center, i know

you will not find a better group of

caring, loving, affectionate angels

to take care of you and give you

the necessary treatments," sandy

continues. the care begins with the

oncology staff, the radiation staff and

filters right down to the infusion and

clerical staff.

At the Breast health center, dr. susan

Branton and her staff are such caring

individuals who try to comfort you

when they must deliver the bad

news. And, the hospice staff, they

too are just like angels who have

been sent to you. the compassion

and love that they give to families

and individuals is just what is needed

during the time of waiting for our

loved ones to pass. i do not know

about other facilities that offer these

services, but the services offered at

susquehanna health cannot be beat.”

cheryl began working in the

Foundation office on January 19,

1998, and was involved as the

foundations of then Williamsport

hospital and divine Providence

hospital came together following the

alliance that formed susquehanna

health system. during her 15

years with the Foundation, cheryl

has helped with special events,

open houses and donor-related

celebrations while coordinating the

golf tournaments for the Kathryn

candor Lundy Breast health

center, sports medicine center,

muncy Valley hospital and the

annual susquehanna health Golf

tournament (previously known as

the Lefty Wagner Golf tournament).

“cheryl has made such an impact

in our office and our community.

We are thankful for the time,

skills and positive energy she has

brought to make each event a

success, and for her incredible

organizational skills and attention

to detail,” says sherry Watts, Vice

President of development.

Long before her work at the

Foundation, cheryl attended the

school of medical transcription

at Williamsport hospital in 1973

and became the secretary for the

newly created recreational therapy

department at Williamsport hospital

in 1974. After eight years and a brief

stint in human resources, cheryl

was asked to work in the corporate

office while a search to replace

President & cEo clive Waxman

ensued. in 1984, when don creamer

was selected as the next President

& cEo of Williamsport hospital, she

became his assistant until just before

his retirement 17 years later.

cheryl is sad to say goodbye, but

she is excited about the next chapter

of her life with her husband, dale,

which will include lots of time for

family, friends, fishing, skiing and

traveling around the country on

their motorcycle.

“i value the friendships i’ve made

here over the years; they will last a

lifetime,” she says. “i am proud to

have been a part of the work we

have done and definitely one of the

highlights was the bringing together

of the area’s hospitals to work for the

good of the community.”

The Foundation wishes a fond farewell to longtime employee Cheryl Chapman, Special Events Coordinator, who retired February 1, after more than 38 years of service.

in 2012, ronald mcdonald house charities of nEPA, inc. generously donated $20,000 to the Birthplace at Williamsport regional medical center. their donation made the Education and conference room a reality within susquehanna tower’s new Birthplace. this room provides a high-tech and specially dedicated area to educate more than 1,250 patients and their families as well as 65 staff members on an annual basis.

Did you know there are physicians who specialize in taking care of hospital patients from admission to discharge? They’re called hospitalists.


HospitalistsHospitalists Role in Patient Care

Dr. Luke Stefanile, Associate Medical Director of

the Hospitalist Program

Over the last 10 years Susquehanna

Health has developed a team of

16 hospitalists, all board certified

in internal medicine, to provide

round-the-clock care for patients at

Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

Hospitalists have the same training

as other medical doctors, but rather

than working in a practice and seeing

patients outside the hospital, their

work is exclusively in the hospital.

During a typical day, a hospitalist

makes rounds to evaluate patients,

determines whether patients should

be admitted to the hospital, plans

their hospital care, orders tests

and checks results. The hospitalist

also determines when the patient

can be discharged and ensures

that arrangements are made for

any required follow-up treatments.

Hospitalists also consult with

specialists on cases when needed.

“During my residency I did both

inpatient and outpatient care, and I

found that I preferred the inpatient

care,” says Dr. Luke Stefanile,

Associate Medical Director of the

Hospitalist Program. “This was

around the time the hospitalist field

was really beginning to develop, and

it seemed perfect to me. I like that

it keeps me up to date, and I see

a variety of patients who are sicker

than I would see in a family medicine

setting. It gives me the opportunity to

help different types of patients.”

The hospitalists admit patients

at Williamsport Regional Medical

Center through the Emergency

Department as well as directly from

family physician offices. They also do

consultations for surgical patients if

a medical need arises after surgery.

They keep each patient’s primary

care physician apprised of changes

in condition and treatment. In addition

to a faxed report within 24 hours

of admission, all updates to the

patient’s electronic medical records

are available to physicians within

Susquehanna Health Medical Group.

The patient’s primary care physician

also receives a discharge summary

that includes information about

the care the patient received and

recommended follow-up treatment.

“When I came to work at

Susquehanna Health, the hospitalist

program was just eight months

old. I saw that they were very

accommodating and very dedicated

to developing a high-quality hospitalist

program, and they have been true to

that commitment,” says Dr. Stefanile.

Key benefits for patients are

accessibility and efficiency.

Hospitalists are physically in the same

building, so there’s less waiting and

more one-on-one time to address

a patient’s needs. This presence

typically expedites the process for

admission, discharge and other

decisions about care throughout the

day. The hospitalist can effectively

communicate with the patient’s

healthcare team and is familiar with

the routines and best practices at

the hospital to potentially reduce a

patient’s stay and improve the overall

quality of care.

“I think there’s a great deal of

satisfaction for the patient and family,”

says Dr. Stefanile. “We can be very

efficient. We’re right here to answer

questions and evaluate any changes,

so there’s less waiting for the patient

dr. Afolabi is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. she possesses a high level of expertise and training, including fellowships and a residency in electrophysiology and cardiology from the university of Florida and cleveland clinic.

Electrophysiology is the specialized treatment of heart rhythm disorders using medical management and procedures such as ablation or device implantation. individuals with existing heart disease are at the greatest risk of heart rhythm disorders, which can be present with no symptoms.
