W hen the Fed raised short-term interest rates in December, did you

feel obligated to buy, sell or change your investing strategy solely on that knowledge? The urge to make an investment decision is often influenced by media reports and the sentimental value you apply to those investments. This frame of thinking may lead you to make investment decisions based on your emotions, and in the long-term, emotional investing may prevent your portfolio from reaching its true potential.

Focus on the long-term. Check yourself for news-driven fear or euphoria before you call your financial professional. Remind yourself of what your long-term financial goals are, and ask yourself

if making a change would help you reach them. If you still feel you need to make a change, ask your professional for their perspective.

Root out unfitting investments. Do you still have your first stock certificate from mom and dad? Shares inherited from a favorite aunt? Stock from an early employer? There are all kinds of ways to acquire stocks over the years, and over time, some investments may not “fit” with your overall investment goals. It can be hard to detach from stocks with an emotional connection, but like unruly branches in your backyard, portfolios need pruning on a regular basis to perform at their best. Portfolios and individual stocks should be evaluated periodically to determine whether they are still

appropriate holdings given your time horizon, risk tolerance and overall portfolio. Keep in mind that sometimes no changes are warranted, but it’s a good habit to regularly review.

Strive for a balanced portfolio. Portfolios often need to be rebalanced over time, as your individual circumstances and the individual holdings’ situation changes. Take an objective look at your portfolio and ensure you are comfortable with the level of risk. If company stock options are available to you, make sure you’re aware of how that may impact your overall investment strategy. While it’s good to have confidence in your company, having too much stock in one company may expose you to more risk than you intend.

Be consistent. Counteract impulse buying and selling with a consistent approach to investing. Automated investing makes it easy to implement a disciplined approach, such as investing a set amount at regular intervals. This systematic investing

can be a way to help minimize the effects of market volatility in a portfolio; however you will still need to review over time to make sure the strategy fits with your overall goals.

Embrace diversity. You’ll be in a better position to hang on to a sentimental favorite if the rest of your portfolio is diversified across a range of industries and assets. Diversity may provide balance in the event one or more sectors are down, but do keep in mind that diversity alone cannot protect against an investment loss.

Sell when the time is right. If you identify a loser that’s not likely to turn around, it may be advantageous to sell it now. Many investors continue to hold an investment with the hope that one day it will pay off to hold it. If you’re unsure about if you should cut your losses and move on, consult a financial professional who can give you an objective opinion.

Request a portfolio review. If you suspect your personal preferences and emotions are interfering with your investment decisions, defer to the experts. Ask a financial professional to conduct an objective review of your portfolio, with an eye to performance and your financial goals. Together you can look for opportunities to grow your earnings through disciplined investing strategies.

“Everything in Life is a Vibration. Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It cannot be any other way. This is not philosophy -it’s physics.” -Albert Einstein

H ave you ever thought of yourself as energy? The law of nature states that

everything has a vibration. We are made up of atoms that are in a constant state of motion.

Your personal vibrational frequency impacts your physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being. Your vibrational energy is like a radio station. Whatever frequency you generate is the exact source of what you manifest.

What impacts your frequency? Everything! The Law of Vibration essentially says that everything in the universe moves and vibrates. The same principals of vibration in the physical world apply to thoughts, feelings, desires and wills.

Our inner beliefs create our thoughts and our thoughts create our emotions. Emotional energy is much stronger than thought energy.

Emotions can get trapped or stuck in the body. One process used in hypnotherapy is to identify where in the body we are storing our emotions. We may not even be aware of our emotional state, as it can be at a very subconscious level.

Your vibrational frequency is directly impacted by your emotional state. Dr. David Hawkins, author of Power vs. Force, documents a 20 year scientific study, backed by doctors and scientists, revealing how our emotions directly impact our own vibrational frequency. After years of documented research, what is termed as “Levels of Consciousness” emerged. What was discovered was each emotion carries a measurable vibrational frequency. Our vibration therefore is equivalent to the emotions we are holding.

The levels of consciousness show that contracted emotions keep us vibrating at below a 200 frequency. Once we go above 200, we are in a state of “em-POWER-ment”.

Levels of ConsciousnessEmotions that ContractShame . . . . . . . . . . . . . .20Guilt. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35Apathy . . . . . . . . . . . . . .50Grief. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .75Fear . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .100

Desire . . . . . . . . . . . . . .125Anger . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .150Pride . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .175

Emotions that ExpandCourage . . . . . . . . . . . .200Neutrality . . . . . . . . . . .250Willingness . . . . . . . . . .310Acceptance . . . . . . . . . .350Reason . . . . . . . . . . . . .400Love . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .500Joy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .540Peace . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .600Enlightenment . . . . . . .700+

First steps at raising your vibration is becoming aware of your inner thoughts...what feelings are they creating? Where are you on the level of consciousness? Don’t judge it -just observe it, i.e. allow it -stepping into the energy of acceptance.

Think about this... we are told to work on our bodies by doing regular fitness; to go to school to get big brains, and to engage in regular spiritual practice, to work on our spirituality. But what do we do for our emotional well-being?

Mindful living creates awareness of the moment. Awareness opens the door to change. Each moment carries an energetic value, matching that of our energetic frequency. Becoming mindful of what you are thinking and feeling in any given moment are some of the first steps in raising your vibrational energy.

“The key then is to understand that the power is in you. The answer is in you. And you are the answer to all your searches. You are the goal. You are the answer. It’s never outside.”

What brought you to working at this Chamber?

My husband and I literally picked this area out on the map because of all the things it had going for it. When we decided we were going to move, (my husband) talked to his company and they decided to let him work from home, so we both moved down here and I didn’t have a job. We knew the area because we had visited and just loved the vibe of Wesley Chapel. I was looking for jobs and saw a posting here (Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce) for an executive director position and sent my resume. They emailed me back that they had already hired someone. About three weeks after we moved, I received a phone call to come and interview for a job in a sales and marketing position, and I took the job. I went home and my husband asked how the interview went, and I just said ‘I start on Monday’.

How long have you been working at the Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce?

Three and a half years. I came here (Wesley Chapel) and thought wow! This is where it is. This is amazing.

Where did you live and work prior to coming to this area?

My family and I lived in Pensacola, Florida, prior to relocating here. I was the Vice President of Membership at the Chamber there for five years.

What excites you about being part of the Chamber?Oh my gosh, every day that I walk through those doors it is something different. It is something exciting. It is something that I may not have done before- it may be all new, or it

may be something that I know a lot about. It’s just the energy of it; I feel like a juggler. I’ve got lots of balls in the air and I’m juggling; I never know which one’s coming down, so that’s what excites me. Watching businesses grow is fascinating to me. I can give you example after example of how we connect people here. There’s nothing like when a person walks through the door and says, ‘I quit my job today, I’m going to start a business, and I don’t know what I’m doing.’ I’ve had maybe three of those walk through this door, and do you know when it’s time to cut their ribbon- I cry. I celebrate with them. We’ve helped them and watched them grow and connected them, and now they’re paying it forward to somebody else. It’s fascinating to me, and it gets me energized every day to be part of that. People allow us into their business- they want us to be there and they want to help us help others. It’s like a giving tree.

What has changed in the Chamber since you’ve taken over the role of President/CEO?

Everything has changed. I think it’s very important that as our community is evolving our Chamber evolves as well. We can’t do business the same way we did ten years ago, five years ago, or even two years ago. Business looks drastically different now, so I think that as a Chamber it is our job to evolve with our businesses.

How many members were here when you started, and where are we now?

When I started, it was in the mid-400s. Now it’s around 530, so we’ve added about 100. We’ve changed the way we sell; we don’t have sales people and we don’t actively solicit new members to join. We have

Hope Allen ambassadors that are phenomenal. They are the lifeblood of our organization. We had twenty-two new members in the month of January join our Chamber. When someone new joins it is absolutely our job to find out why they joined. I have one member who just needs me to sign their certificates of origin, because they export out of the country. I’m an authorized agent to sign certificates of origin, and that’s all they need the Chamber for. So I exceed his expectations by going to them. They never had that before, so I’m going to give you over and above. I go to them.

Seeing all of the changes in the Chamber take place and the memberships grow, is there an

experience that you’ve had in your life to which you can attribute your ability to make these changes?

I take everything that we go through and I learn from it, and I will reflect on things. The experiences I’ve had have definitely helped me, and have helped me to appreciate what we have here in Wesley Chapel.

What is something that you think most people don’t know about the Chamber that you’d like to make known?

People need to know that we don’t sell memberships. We are building this organically, and we listen to our members. If there’s something

Continued from page 7.

We provide programs and events to help our members connect and to grow their businesses. All of our programs and events are for our members and each one is an opportunity to connect. Whether you like to do a coffee morning social, or you like to play golf, or you like the after hours, or you like the big breakfast, or the women’s group. Whatever it is, we try to have something for everybody, and I think that’s the benefit of being part of the Chamber. It’s not just a listing in our directory or being on our website. We try to tailor our benefits to what you’re looking for to grow your business.

What types of businesses can join the Chamber?

The membership belongs to that of the business. Any business can join our Chamber.

What’s a typical type of business that is a Chamber member?

Sixty percent of our memberships are small businesses, and for us our definition of a small business is under ten employees. So that means forty percent are larger businesses, and that number is growing. We are seeing some trends where businesses are adding employees, and they’re coming out of that small business section.

Directly after a new business joins the Chamber, what are some recommended next steps so they can get the most benefit and success out of their membership?I mentioned our ambassadors and they play a crucial role in this portion of it. When a business joins our Chamber, at the next ambassador meeting we assign an ambassador to each new member for the next year. The ambassador is going to go to the new member’s office; they’re going to talk to them, meet with them, and go through the packet of information for the Chamber. The ambassador will put their decal up, and add them to their book of business. They say, ‘Who do you want to connect with? What do you want to do? How can we help you and make sure you

that they need, we will explore it. If they want to meet people, we’ll help them to meet those people. That’s how all of our programs are starting to evolve – we really and truly work for our members. I tell everybody I have 530 bosses. I work for them (the members). At the top of our organization chart are our members. I’m way down at the bottom; I’m the management of the business, but our members run it.

What are three words you’d use to describe your typical member – the individual, not the business?

The individuals that I see come through here are entrepreneurial, driven, and they’re excited. They’re bringing incredible energy, and I’m learning from our members every day.

If you could name some of the benefits for a business or individual to join the Chamber, why would someone want to join? What do they get out of it?

I tell people when they’re looking to join any Chamber, whether it’s our Chamber or another, ‘Join your local Chamber first, and if you can afford to join them all, join them all - because there’s a benefit to all of the Chambers.’ Each Chamber has a niche and something very different to offer you. (The Chamber of Commerce) has been around since the beginning of commerce; it’s been important for businesses to have a voice, even way back when. The benefit of joining our Chamber is that we are a two-county regional Chamber. We are Hillsborough and Pasco, and we represent Wesley Chapel and New Tampa. We have a very large footprint, and we have the attention of the state and of the Governor. The benefit of joining our Chamber is being connected. And it’s how you want to be connected. Do you want to be connected with businesses or with the community? Because we can connect you with both. There are so many benefits to joining the Chamber, it just depends on what you want for your business. It’s very flexible, and it’s more a question of what you want out of it.

outside our region. Not just to hear from them, but for them to see what Wesley Chapel has going on. So that’s a bigger event… it’s networking in the beginning, and then it goes into what’s happening in our region.

The same with Women of Wesley Chapel (WOW) – it’s all women. The speaker isn’t a WOW member- it’s someone from outside our circle because it brings in a different influence and flavor. Each one of the events is structured very differently. We have a ‘Final Friday’ on the last Friday of every month. It’s from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, and it’s just a happy hour. No agenda. If you just want to come and have a drink, come. All of our events are spread around, between New Tampa and Wesley Chapel.

Tell me about WOW.

Women of Wesley Chapel is our flagship program here at the Chamber. We meet the first Friday of every month at Florida Hospital in the Wellness Center. We bring a speaker in from outside the area, and we also have a sponsor who is one of our Chamber members. I will tell you that I’m very proud of the fact that we have the calendar (of speakers) filled for an entire year, plus a waiting list of about 6 months. It’s a benefit of the Chamber membership to be able to attend the WOW meetings, but you can visit twice without being a member. The cost is $10 for the entire year. We are averaging about 70 women every month. It’s incredible to watch the power of this group and to watch them do business with and support each other. There was a lady there who wasn’t comfortable speaking

in front of people and standing up, but the girl next to her held her hand while she introduced herself. By the end of it she was great though. So it’s incredible to watch that and to watch these women support each other. It’s important for the community to know that women in business are friendly and not here to destroy each other. It’s a phenomenal group of women in business, and we’re very proud of that. We’ve had awesome speakers, and the feedback we get from the speakers is, ‘I had no idea that this group was this dynamic’. For more information on WOW, please visit: http://www.wesleychapelchamber.com/women-of-wesley-chapel

Apart from the dues, are there requirements to become or to stay a member?

No. It’s a voluntary dues paying membership.

What plans or events are on the horizon for the Chamber that you’re excited about?

Oh my gosh, our Chamber is definitely in a high growth area. We have extraordinary momentum happening right now. Our Chamber is in the middle of several major projects that potentially could change the landscape of what Wesley Chapel could look like. It’s our job to have our finger on the pulse of what’s happening in Wesley Chapel and New Tampa. There are some projects that are coming up that are going to be amazing for our community.

Anything specific you want to mention?

The ice hockey rink. We have been

get the most out of your Chamber membership?’

How does one become an ambassador?

Our ambassadors are phenomenal, and I can’t say enough wonderful things about them. They make us who we are. You have to be a member for at least a year. We only do ambassador trainings twice a year, and it’s very structured. If you’re here to sell your own product, then you’re not here for the right reasons. The ambassadors are putting aside their business to help somebody else grow their business. You’re an ambassador first, and then you’re your business when it comes to the Chamber.

What is the benefit of becoming an ambassador?

You really and truly get to watch and help businesses grow. And there is a lot of business that gets done as well.

Is there a good path to success for new and existing members?

The path to success is going to be what the business wants -what does success look like to them? The path for each business is very different. It’s individual; we don’t have a one-size-fits-all.

For someone who has no experience with the Chamber, and they go to their first meeting – what can they expect?

All of our meetings are different. We want people to get in where they fit in and be comfortable at those events; we try to make sure all of our events have a really good description. At our monthly breakfast meeting, we bring in a speaker who is from

Continued on page 10.

very involved since the inception of the idea. They have done a fantastic job of incorporating our members into their needs. They’ve used members for signage, for naming rights, and we’ve helped facilitate all of those conversations and connected the pieces. I look forward to new venues in Wesley Chapel and New Tampa to hold events. I look forward to the groundbreakings for the hotels that are coming. I have a white board with a list of all the upcoming projects, but I give them code names because I can’t talk about them yet. But I will say that the projects that we’re working on are well over eight hundred jobs. What eight hundred jobs looks like for your community is a trickle-down effect. I can’t fathom what that looks like for our community or how that translates to business for you, the car dealers, insurance, education and homes… all of it trickles down.

What do you envision for the Chamber going forward in the next one to two years?

My immediate vision for our Chamber is we are applying for state certification this year to be a certified Chamber of Commerce, which will essentially say that we do everything by the book. That will be a big day in our Chamber life.

How does that translate to the members?

It means that we do best practices as a business. We have our governance insurance, and communications in line. We are fiscally responsible and have been fiscally audited. We have policies and procedures in place, and we are a sound Chamber of

Commerce. It benefits our members by knowing that they can trust in our Chamber when they make their investment. I think there are only seventeen in the state that are certified Chambers. It also helps us on a national level. We are in business for businesses, so we have to be the best.

INTERVIEWERS NOTE: Before the interview began, Hope was discussing how she has been working to create a more fluid work-family life for herself and staff at the Chamber by scheduling Chamber events during work hours instead of in the evenings whenever possible. She stated that making these changes has had a positive impact on her family life, as well as the lives of the staff members at the Chamber.

Do you have any keys to success or words of advice for working moms or people working on a work-life balance? How do you manage this balance?

I always knew that I would be a working mother. I had my career before I had my child, so I always knew that I was going to have to figure out how to manage. I will tell you that I live two very different lives; my work life and my home life. It’s almost a tale of two women. When I get her ready in the morning, I’m her mother. When she goes to school, I become ‘The Chamber’. The Chamber then has my undivided attention until the moment I pick up my daughter, and then I’m her mother again. I found in Pensacola that I had to drive over a 3-mile bridge every day. So I dropped the Chamber at the bridge,

and I didn’t pick it up until the next morning. The Chamber would be there when I crossed the bridge the next day. I have always told my employees, ‘We’ve got to check it at the door’. When you walk in the door, you are 100% this job, and when you walk out you are 100% whatever else you want to be. It’s taken us a while to get our Chamber schedule on that; our board meetings are still in the evening, so I still have some evening obligations. But when I’m with my child, I’m in that moment with her and our family, and that’s so important to me. They [work and family life] can co-exist without having mommy-guilt.

It’s really inspiring that, as the leader here, you’re setting that tone. Because not only are your employees going to start following suit, but also the businesses you come into contact with; it has a really broad reach.

Right, and I hope that it does. So the businesses can say, ‘Oh, so I can have a ribbon cutting at noon and people are going to come?’ Yes! They are! You do not have to take any time away from your family. Some people want to do it in the evenings though to include their families, and we do our best to accommodate. But if you’ll notice, we (typically) start ribbon cuttings at 4.

You mentioned that you have a child. What would you like for everyone to know about her?

I have a 9-year-old daughter. Her name is Ryan. She goes to Turner-Bartels, and she is quite a delight. Nine is a fun age.

Does she do any sports?

No, she is a special needs child with a neurological disorder. She has cerebral palsy, but it’s very mild. She’s high functioning; she does Karate after school. It’s been great to watch her come out of her shell. My daughter knows that she has a neurological disorder. Essentially we’ve just explained to her. She’s only nine, so we say, ‘Your brain is just wired differently than other people’s.’ She’s aware of her condition. It’s definitely a very minimal case of cerebral palsy; it just falls under the cerebral palsy umbrella.

(Being that Ryan is special needs) Are there any organizations that you support?

Shriners Hospital has been amazing to us, and just having those resources close by here is one of the reasons we moved here - to be able to have access to all of her doctors, therapies, and Shriners Hospital. For more information on Shriners Hospital, please visit http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/locations/tampa

Closing Comments:From growing the number of memberships in the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, to ribbon cutting ceremonies, to working with businesses on plans for the economic development of Wesley Chapel, Hope leads the organization with a high level of skill and finesse. She’s dedicated to the businesses of the community, and truly aims to help everyone succeed by connecting one member to another, benefitting the greater Wesley Chapel community as a

whole. Her dedicated work is helping to define the Wesley Chapel area as the high-growth, high momentum region that it’s becoming more and more known for. Our final question is personal in nature, yet her response can be applied to anyone, anywhere and in any line of work:

What’s one thing you would want your daughter, Ryan, to remember about you as she gets older?

I want her to know that you can do everything. You can be a wife, you can be a mother, you can be a CEO, and you can be a leader. You can do all of those things. You don’t have to choose to be only one of those. For the people who do (choose), that’s great – that’s for them. She doesn’t have to choose. That’s what I want to show her. I want to leave a legacy that whatever you choose, do it 100%.

Resident Magazine truly thanks Hope Allen for her time and candid reflection on the Chamber, Wesley Chapel, being a mother, and in managing it all. For more information on the Chamber of Commerce, please visit www.wesleychapelchamber.com.

T he countdown to Spring Break has begun! If you are planning a vacation get

away to an exotic location, (which could mean just driving down to St. Pete Beach), a fun family cruise, or spending the week laying by the community pool, you may already be thinking about buying a new swimsuit.

Here is a step by step 3 week plan that I have created exclusively for Resident magazine readers that will help you get ready to wear that bathing suit with confidence.

Our plan will consist of a blend of strength and cardiovascular exercises performed at a higher intensity to increase the amount of calories burned, not only during your session, but afterwards. That’s right, you will keep on burning while you rest!

You will also incorporate a cardio activity of your choice twice a week, such walking, running, cycling, swimming, etc. Take 2 days to rest. Recovery is also a very important part of any exercise program. Your goal is to perform the circuit 3x per week on non-consecutive days. Focus on form and use very little or no weight if you are just starting out. Using your own body weight will do wonders!

For a full description of each exercise please visit our Energia Wellness Studio website. Fitness Model: Renee, training client at Energia.

Virna Lichter is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Adult and Kids Yoga and

Meditation instructor, and Owner at Energia Wellness Studio in Wesley Chapel. For more information, visit www.EnergiaWellnessStudio.com or call 813-973-7300.

R E A L E S TAT E

It is widely known that a large number of homes are sold during the spring buying

season. Often for that reason many potential sellers will wait until the final weeks of the school year to list their homes. The pressing question this year will be whether or not that is the best strategy.

It may well turn out that with listings being near a ten year low, waiting until the spring to list your home may not be the best option this year. The second quarter of the year is historically the most popular months for homeowners to list their homes with nearly 25% more new listings coming out than the first three months of the year. Increased number of listings with the trend of buyers not wanting to wait this year as the result of

an improving job market and the potential of another interest rate increase will result in more buyers looking for homes right now.

Higher home sales in the last few months of 2015 and into 2016 has caused inventory to drop and has reduced the average inventory of homes to less than five months supply. Experts have traditionally stated that less than a six months supply would indicate a seller’s market and will generally see some appreciation. Six to seven months inventory will be for the most part be a neutral market and prices will mostly move relative to inflation. More than seven months inventory usually mean that we would be in a buyer’s market with more sellers chasing relatively fewer buyers which results in lower offers and depreciation in home values.

If you are thinking of listing your home in 2016 now may well be the time! Why wait until many other potential sellers decide to list in the spring? The combination of home inventory levels at or near a ten year low, and the potential of additional interest rate increases later this year suggests that you need to list sooner than later. Listing now will give your home the most exposure to potential buyers and may well allow you to get the best price for your home.

Healthcare & Wellness Spa is the office of Dr. Sheryl A. Ballinger, Chiropractic Physician. Dr. Ballinger has been a practicing chiropractic in the Tampa for over thirty years.

“I felt the needs of my patients had changed over the years; they were looking for something different than the traditional chiropractic office,” said Dr. Ballinger. The office is so relaxing, patients are able to get the care they need

and not feel rushed; most enjoy a Therapeutic Massage before or after their adjustment as part of their treatment program. Chiropractic care uses gentle, drug-free spinal adjustments to treat neuro-musculoskeletal conditions including back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and headaches.

Dr. Ballinger’s staff of LMT’s also work to address the patient’s muscle spasms and tensions which are so helpful in keeping the body functioning to its best. Most of these services are covered through

insurance, so it makes staying healthy easier to budget if it costs only a copay.

To compliment Dr. Ballinger’s practice, the Wellness Spa offers a full Menu of treatments for relaxation including Hot Stone Massage and healthful body treatments to address detox, cellulite, and joint pain.

Judy Matheson, Licensed Esthetician with over 13 years experience, completes our wellness services by providing healthy and rejuvenating facial treatments. Her skincare line, Sanitas, is gluten-free and biogenic, offering nutrient-rich, natural ingredients.

The combination of the Sanitas Skincare products with microdermabrasion, LED Light Therapy, chemical peels, and microcurrent stimulation are a winning combination when addressing acne, Rosacea, and anti-aging problems.

Staying healthy means you have to be proactive in taking care of your body through regular chiropractic adjustments, massage, nutrition, and exercise. Listen to your body when you feel that twinge of pain, and don’t put off that treatment because you think it will go away. A problem addressed early can prevent it from becoming a chronic condition that prevents you from living a healthy, active lifestyle. Your spine and muscles are in it for the long haul and could use a little help to keep everything running great.

Dr. Ballinger accepts most major medical

PPO insurance plans, as well as Auto Injury patients; she is a network provider for Blue Cross, Cigna, Humana, and First Health/ Coventry Insurance plans. E aster is early this year, March 27. Christmas is the same date every year,

yet Easter’s date fluctuates. Why is this? It started with a meeting called the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which determined that Easter would be on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal (spring) equinox. This year the spring equinox lands on March 20. In any given year, Easter can be between March 22 and April 25. In 2016 we’re on the early side.

As I write this, I received word that a good friend died yesterday. He was a good friend, a good man, and as these things go I had lost contact with him years ago. Only about ten years older, so……he was young. A double sadness, then, has taken me. Bill died and I haven’t seen or spoken to him in years.

Bill lived in the other San Antonio. Texas. He was my children’s pediatrician and church member. Funny. Sweet. Serious about his faith. Devoted. How he loved his family. The thing that everyone adored about Bill was his laugh. His laugh made me laugh. Breathe in loudly in your throat and you’ll get close to it. He’d laugh and we’d copy him. Then we’d laugh more. What a gift.

This season, these days leading to the resurrection, reminds us of our humanity, that “from dust we came

and to dust we shall return.” These days we ponder our sin, and where we’ve gone astray in life, and how we can return to God with contrite hearts—a gift to God resting in our hands. But March 27, but any given Sunday, that’s resurrection day. That’s the day we say “yes” to God’s “yes” to us. That’s the day we say, “Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (I Corinthians 15:55). For those who are Christians, we are always and everyday an Easter people.

I pray that your Easter season is meaningful, and that from it comes new life that surprises you, catches you off guard, or flabbergasts you! I can hear Bill laughing now, and the angels tickled by him, mimicking him, and laughing even harder. Yep, that’s the good stuff.
