Tear-OffCompletelyremoveexistingshingles,underlayment(includingtheiceprotectionmembrane),flashing(ifrustedorinbadcondition),etcandinstallroofingasifitisnewconstruction.AccordingtotheNationalRoofingContractorsAssociation(NRCA),theexist-ingiceprotectionmembranecanremaininplaceifasecondlayerofmembraneisappliedoverit.Roofsheathingmustbecheckedbeforere-roofingandrepairedorreplacedifrottedorunsound.Replace-mentsheathingmustconformtotherequirementsoftheBuildingCode.OverlayingofsheathingmayrequireapprovalbyaMinnesotaregisteredengi-neer.Overlayofexistingshinglesisnolongerallowedbythecode.

Fastenersforasphaltshinglesmustbegalvanizedsteel,stainlesssteel,aluminum,orcopperroofingnailswithaminimum12-gage(0.105inch,or3mm)shankandaminimum3/8-inch(10mm)diameterhead.Theymustbelongenoughtopenetratethroughtheroofingmaterialsandaminimumof3/4inch(19mm)intotheroofsheathing.Wheretheroofsheathingislessthan3/4inchthick,thefasten-
ersmustpenetratethroughthesheathing.FastenersmustcomplywithATSMF1667.Note: Use of other types of fasteners must be approved by the City Inspections Department.

Other FlashingAllotherflashingandroofventsshallbecheckedand,ifrustedorinbadcondition,replaced.ReplaceflashingwithnotlessthanNo.26-gaugecorrosion-resistantmetal.Roofventsandotherflashingsmustbeinstalledaccordingtomanufacturer’sinstructions.Anyreplace-mentofflashingatmasonrychimneysmustbeproperlycutinandre-tuckpointedorcaulkedwithanapprovedproduct.
Vertical Wall Flashing(26-Gauge)Applyshinglesuptheroofuntilacoursemustbetrimmedtofitatthebaseoftheverticalwall.Plantoadjusttheexposureslightly(andevenly)inthepreviouscourses,sothatthelastshingleisatleasteightincheswide(vertically).Thisallowsaminimumfive-inchexpo-sureofthetopcourseandathree-inchheadlap.Theflashingstripshouldbebent,usingametalbrake,toextendatleasttwoinchesuptheverticalwallandatleastthreeinchesontothelastshinglecourse(thatis,tothetopofthecutout).Embedtheflashinginasphaltplasticcementoranotherappropriateadhesive,andnailittotheroofevery12inches.Donotnailthestriptothewall.
Ifsidelapsarenecessary,overlapthepiecesatleastsixinches.Donotfasteninthisjointarea.

Where to Use Ice Protection MembraneAlwaysfollowmanufacturer’sinstallationinstructions.TheNRCArecommendsputtingnewiceprotectionmembraneovertheexisting.Topreventanyridgeeffect,extendituptheroofaminimumof12inches(heightofoneshinglecourse),pastthetopmostedgeoftheexistingmaterial.Realistically,thismeansmostcontractorswilluseanadditionalone-halforfull-rollwidth(18-inchor36-inch)ofmaterialalongtheeaves.Removaloftheexistingiceprotectionmembrane(whichisdifficultandultimatelyendsinadecisiontojustremovethedeckingalongtheeavesandinstallnewdecking)isgener-allyexcessive.
