Pathology presence in social media is undeniable, and this would be the new normal in our interactions. Additionally, I want to advocate to continue the CAP virtual lecture series for Pathology Residents. This is an amazing initiative that I feel should be at least 2 times per week. Some of those lectures have been like a revelation to me, and I feel that now I really understand some topics that previously were difficult to digest. Please convey your understanding of the role of a RFEC member and their responsibility to the Residents Forum and the College of American Pathologists. The College of American Pathologists is the most renowned organization of board-certified pathologists, promoting excellence in pathology practice nationwide and worldwide. RFEC is a platform that give pathology residents the opportunity to participate in CAP activities, giving voice to their junior member. Please address the time commitment for the office in which you are interested and your ability to fulfill it. I understand that I would be required to participate in all RFEC sessions and I am committed to be present in all of them to the best of my abilities.

Residents Forum Executive Committee Elections

Candidate for Alternate Delegate to the CAP House of Delegates

Janira Navarro-Sanchez, MD University of Hawaii. John A. Burns School of Medicine Honolulu, HI

When are you taking your boards? – 2022

CAP Experience: N/A

How did you become interested in serving on the RFEC? I have been following CAP twitter account and from some of the residents that participate in RFEC. This year has been especially different from other years because their online presence has been important for us as junior members. Well established practices are changing due to COVID-19 pandemic. I feel this is an interesting and educational time to participate.

What do you hope to accomplish during your time, if elected? I want to better understand the policies that affect our specialty. I have come to the realization that they are as important as our pathology knowledge and they are a strong influence in the way we practice. If I get elected, I would like to increase the exposure of Pathology to the general public and our medical colleagues.

What talents and skills do you bring to the RFEC that you believe would benefit the Residents Forum? This is my second pathology residency, I worked as a pathologist (AP only) in my country. Even with different healthcare systems, the experience of pathology residency and practice is similar around the world. We share common problems and we are more alike than we think. Together we can advocate for our beautiful specialty and move it forward into the future. I am the social media manager of @UHPathology. My goal is to share our residency activities and pathology pearls with the Twitterverse. What else should the Residents Forum know about you? I am a PGY-3 Pathology Resident from the University of Hawaii. I have been very fortunate to find here amazing fellow residents and faculty attendings that have made this residency experience enjoyable. I am interested in Dermatopathology and Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology, but I love the discovery process of all areas of anatomic pathology. My research project with Dr. Lum, my faculty mentor is about how artificial intelligence might help dermatologists screen melanocytic lesions. We are also interested in creating a dermoscopic database of melanocytic lesions in our population. This can improve the efficiency of the AI in recognizing these lesions in different types of skin.
