actor, author, motivational speaker, advocate, U.S. army veteran and Dancing with the Stars season 13 Champion, J.R. Martinez will be the featured guest speaker at the 2016 WaMS Luncheon. Best known for his role as “Brot Monroe,” on the daytime drama All My Children J.R.’s career path has been incredible, and perhaps even a bit improbable.

Born in 1983 in Louisiana, J.R. moved to arkansas and then Georgia, where he played football and had aspirations of making it to the nFL. after high school, he joined the army in September, 2002 and six months later was deployed to iraq. a month later J.R. was driving a humvee when it hit a roadside bomb. trapped inside, JR suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to a third of his body. He spent nearly three years in recovery undergoing 34 surgeries, including skin grafts and cosmetic surgery. During his recovery, he was asked to speak to another burn patient. J.R. realized he had a positive impact and decided to use his own experiences to help others.

in 2008, All My Children was auditioning for a veteran to join the cast and a friend encouraged J.R. to try out. What began as a three month story arc for his character developed into a three year role. J.R. then went on to inspire a nation on aBC’s Dancing with the Stars as the season 13 champion. J.R. shared his story in the new York times best-seller, Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength, and Spirit,” a memoir about how he was able to take his own personal tragedy, and turn it into an inspiration for others.

Martinez travels the world spreading his message of resilience and optimism. He devotes himself to showing others the true value of making the most of every situation. His story is unique, but his message is universal: your path in life is decided by your own ability to adapt and overcome. the Women against MS (WaMS) Luncheon Committee is pleased to bring J.R. Martinez to the 2016 Luncheon on november 4, 2016.
