Page 3: Resources for Healthy Living: Guide to Central Harlem

This food guide was created for the practical use of the residents of Central Harlem. It was meant to be a tool in developing a healthy eating lifestyle. The guide begins with useful nutritional information that will show you how you can begin to make healthy food choices. This is followed by a directory of over 50 food establishments including supermarkets, farmer’s markets, restaurants, and juice bars. As you make your way through the streets of Central Harlem, look out for our recommended locations!

The key to eating well is making smart choices. Everything you put into your body affects its function, both on a daily basis and in the future. Some of these decisions are as simple as choosing between sugary candy and naturally sweet fruit, while others might call for careful consideration, such as choosing fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers’ markets over those from large chain supermarkets. Making the right choices can seem like a daunting task at first, but by purchasing your food from businesses listed in this guide, and watching your portion sizes, you can easily maintain a healthy lifestyle.

So why should you eat healthy foods? Eating well isn’t just about preventing destructive illnesses like diabetes and heart disease; it’s also about feeling good on a regular basis. It’s about treating your body well so that you have the energy and strength to endure the stresses of life, and ensuring you receive the right nutrition for a strong immune system. Most importantly, it’s about living a long, happy life for yourself and the people who care about you. So take life by the wheel—and drive!

Supermarkets offer a constant supply of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean meat, whole-grains, and sugar-free cereals. Be sure to shop wisely! Don’t be tempted or fooled by the abundance of unhealthy options mixed in with the good ones. Read nutrition labels and look for the green “Smart Choices Made Easy” seals on select products. Buy organic whenever possible.

These markets bring in a selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other food items grown or produced on local farms outside New York City. Unless the day is particularly rainy, most occur on a regular basis from late spring or early summer to fall, and a few run year-round. Prices can be higher than at the average supermarket, but the quality of the food cannot be beat, and its benefits for the environment and local community are unending! A number of them accept EBT cards and are involved in a food stamp program that allows $2 to be saved for every $5 spent; for more information, call (800) 343-8859.

Eating locally-grown food is good for you, the environment, and the community.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs are a great way for community members to connect with local farmers and to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce. Members of a CSA have connections with local farms and become “share-holders” through monetary contributions. In return, the farm supplies members with a bounty of seasonal fruits, vegetables and other items such as eggs and milk.

Page 14: Resources for Healthy Living: Guide to Central Harlem

The surest way to have fresh produce at your fingertips is to grow it yourself! Starting a community garden in your neighborhood allows you to choose which fruits and vegetables you would like to eat and to control what goes into your foodbyavoidingpesticides. The“AmericatheBeautifulFund”providesfreeseeds to new gardens that may need some assistance.

When eating out, it’s important to make the healthiest choices possible. Save fried foods for special occasions, and as restaurant serving sizes are generally twice as big as they should be, try splitting a meal with someone to avoid overeating.
