All living things need oxygen. Oxygen enables them toburn nutrients, release the energy required to grow, reproduce, and maintain life.

The respiratory system in an organism helps ininhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide and watervapor.

The Human Respiratory System consists of thenasal cavity, throat, voice box, wind pipe, bronchi andlungs.

It provides oxygen to the body and releases carbondioxide.

Oxygen taken in burns the food by breaking downglucose present in the food into CO2 and H2O and thus,

    gives us energy.

Breathingis the process carried out duringRespiration.

It involves taking in air rich in O2 (Inhalation) with helpof respiratory systems and giving out CO2 (Exhalation).

Breathing purifies our blood and gives us energy to

    work.

This is a continuous process which goes on all the timeand throughout the lifetime of the human being.

    Mechanism of Breathing

The air present in the environment is taken in throughthe nasal cavity.

The nasal hair purifies the air to stop the dust andgerms from entering into our body.

It then reaches our lungs (present in the chest cavity)through the windpipe.

The lungs transport the oxygen present in the air todifferent parts of the body.

    Breathing consists of two phases-

    1. Inhalation- the process of taking in air

    2. Exhalation- the process of blowing outair

The heart, blood and blood vessels make up the Circulatory

System. The Circulatory System passes nutrients, gases, hormones, blood cells, etc to & from cells to help fight diseases andstabilize the body temperature.

The heart pumps the blood carrying nutrients, gases, etcthrough small and bigblood vessels to different parts of thebody.

The human heart has four chambers. The atria are the receiving chambers and the ventricles arethe discharging chambers.

The right ventricle discharges into the lungs to provideoxygen to the blood.

The left ventricle discharges its blood toward the rest of thebody via the aorta.

Blood flows through the heart in one direction, from theatria to the ventricles, and out of the great arteries.
