ADAPTABILITY

Each type of respirator, whether an air-purifying half mask, an airline hood, or an SCBA has advantages and disadvantages.Which respirator is right for you depends on many factors. Questions you should consider include:

What are the contaminants? Are they gases or vapors, or are they particulates?

What are the contaminant concentrations? Will the job be on-going or will respirators only be required for a few weeks?

If an airline system is required, is it practical, or will a PAPR be more appropriate?

What other worksite conditions will be encountered, such as high humidity or high heat?

Will workers be performing special tasks like welding or grinding?

Do you need a respirator that can adapt from APR to PAPR or supplied air?

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAM

United States:OSHAs Standard on Respiratory Protection, 29 CFR 1910.134,requires a Respiratory Protection Program be in place before yourworkers wear respirators. The program must be site specific, not copiedfrom a canned one size fits all template. It must be dynamic, changing

as your worksite changes. And it must address all the respiratoryhazards that may be encountered at your site. For more information onputting together your Respiratory Protection Program contact OSHAsAdvisory Group or your Employment Compensation Insurance carrier.

Canada:CSAs Respiratory Standard, Z94.4, sets out requirements forthe proper selection, use and care of respirators and theadministration of an effective respiratory protection program inthe workplace. Provinces also have their own Standards, for

example CSST in Quebec, Ministry of Labor for Ontario and theCompensation Board for British Columbia. You need to becomefamiliar with both the national CSA Standard and any localrequirements that may apply.

VOLUNTARY USE OF DISPOSABLE RESPIRATORSUnited StatesUse of disposable respirators by workers does not exempt an Employer from establishing a Respiratory Protection Program.Even if disposable respirators are permitted as a Voluntary option for workers, the Employer must first determine that any potentialcontaminant concentrations are below OSHAs Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), and the Employer must also provide Employees wearingrespirators with a copy of Appendix D from the OSHA Standard on Respiratory Protection 29 CFR1910.134.

CanadaEven when a respirator is used below the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), a full respiratory Protection Program is required including fit testing.

FILTER EFFICIENCIES

The National Institute of Occupational Safetyand Health (NIOSH) classifies filters in twoways, type and efficiency. Using theseclassifications there are nine possible filtergroups. North CFR-1 half masks are ideal for dusty environmentsthat require frequent change out of filters. The weldingversion features a stainless steel mesh cover to catchsparks and slag. WHICH I.D. HOSE IS RIGHT FOR YOUR WORKSITE?

North offers hoses in two inside diameters (I.D.), 1/2 and 3/8. 1/2 hoses allow more air to pass through, allowing the use of a lower PSI atthe air source. This is best for portable ambient air pumps that will not support higher PSI requirements. 3/8 I.D. hoses are smaller and lighteThis is especially important if you need 100 or more of hose and want to minimize how much weight workers must carry around at the works

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published new Assigned Protection Factors (APF) for all respirators in Septemberevised 29 CFR 1910.134. The new APF Table assigns two possible protection factors for supplied air and powered air-purifying hoods. All han APF of 25 unless conditions outlined in footnote 4 from OSHAs Assigned Protection Factor Table are met. The Canadian Safety Administrprocess of adopting the OSHA APF Table, with CSA Standard Z94.4-2010 due to be pub lished in June, 2010.

FOOTNOTE FROM OSHA TABLE ON ASSIGNED PROTECTION FACTORS

The employer must have evidence provided by the respirator manufacturer that testing of these respirators demonstrates performance at a level of of 1,000 or greater to receive an APF of 1,000. This level of performance can best be demonstrated by performing a WPF* or SWPF study or equivatesting. Absent such testing, all other PAPRs and SARs with helmets/hoods are to be treated as loose-fitting facepiece respirators, and receive an AP

A minimum fit factor of 10,000 is required for the higher APF of 1,000

Primair Plus, All 10 subjects achieved fit factors in excess of 50,000

CONCLUSION

North by Honeywell has demonstrated that the North 85300 Series supplied air hoods, both with and without bib,

and the Primair Plus PAPR hood have achieved the protection factors required for an OSHA APF of 1,000.

USE OF HOSE LENGTHS AND I.D. WITH AMBIENT AIR PUMPSNorth offers 25 hose in addition to the 50 and 100 hose lengths noted above. Use of the shorter hose length is not recommended as it will result insignificantly warmer air delivered to the facepiece or hood. North offers 3/8 I.D. hoses in addition to the I.D. noted above, however use of smaller I.D.hoses will result in less air flow, and the minimum requirement of 4 or 6 CFM may not be delivered to the facepiece or hood.

North facepieces and hoods are NIOSH approved in these additional configurations and you may wish to consider these alternatives for special applicationsor when using another type air supply . Refer to page 33 for a complete listing of hoses.
