MAIN EVENTS14 QUALITY BASEBALL DIAMONDS

COME FROM CARINGAn in-depth look at the two winners of the first Baseball Diamond of the Year Awards:Heritage Park in Albany, NY; and Fitton Field at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. JohnLiburdi cares for the municipally owned Heritage Park as if it were Yankee Stadium. In fact,it is the home field for the team's double-A Albany-Colonie Yankees and is also the site ofmany events normally held at major professional stadiums. Jim Long and his crew at HolyCross have proven that a baseball field can be maintained to professional standards withinthe budget and manpower restraints. of a small college.

20 SUPERINTENDENT WORKS OVERTIMEFOR BErrER TURFLouis Miller, superintendent of Louisville Country Club, Louisville, KY, was prepared whenhigh temperatures and humidity caused a serious outbreak of pythium throughout the OhioValley last summer. During 19 years at the club, Miller has rebuilt every green, reconstructedmany of the holes, and instituted maintenance practices to guard against such anoccurrence. He has also generously contributed his time to golf organizations and areaschools to help others improve the quality of their turf. It all adds up to many aD-hourweeks for Miller, but he enjoys every minute.

BeforeThese "Before" and "After" pictures were sent to us by a user inTexas. The turf was very chlorotic, obviously dry, and had notresponded to prior fertilizer and water treatment. Ferromec wasapplied in split applications of 5 ounces per 1,000 square feet.

After

The initial response in 48 hours was very dramatic and, as the"After" photo demonstrates, chlorosis was eventually elimi-nated. Don't you have a spot where you would like to test asample of Ferromec?

Turf, Shrubs, PlantsGreen Up in 48 HoursWith FeRROMEC Iron

Let us send you a sample of Ferromecso you can see for yourself how fast, easy, and economical it is to change thecolor of your world (and perhaps yourwallet) from a weak chloratic yellow to astrong, vibrant green.

Everett Mealman, PresidentPBI/GORDON Corporation

Thousands of turf and land-scape professionals, as well ascountless nurserymen, used Fer-romec for the first time in 1986,and to summarize their responsein one sentence...

"...Thanks! I needed that!"

Ferromec causes green up vir-tually over night in some instan-

ces. It speeds up the activity ofherbicides. It reduces the ten-dency to over-fertilize in an effortto produce fast color. It provides aquick therapeutic shot of iron... and it does all this so easily andeconomically that the practice ofusing expensive, slow-workingchelated iron will never be thesame again. Nor will the practiceof over-fertilization.

No wonder we are so eager toget a sample of Ferromec in yourhands!

The Facts AboutFerrous Iron and Ferromec

Perhaps you are interested inknowing why it is that Ferromec isable to produce such a superiorresponse. It's because of a pat-ented process that enables us toactually bond a ferrous iron mole-cule to a molecule of urea, so thatthe iron is stabilized in the ferrousstate.

As you know, only iron that is inthe ferrous state can be utilizedby a plant. But ironically, un-treated ferrous sulphate turns tothe non-usable ferric state almostimmediately when it is applied.

Page 6: Resplendent intheafternoon sun,DodgerStadium,home ...sturf.lib.msu.edu/page/1987apr2-10.pdf · Resplendent intheafternoon sun,DodgerStadium,homeoftheLosAngeles Dodgers,playshost toanother

Before After

Trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plantings will respond toFerromec as dramatically as turf, when they are deficient iniron. These before-and-after pictures show how Liriopegreened up when Ferromec was applied in August of 1986.

Thus it is that scientists devisedchelating to fix the iron moleculein the ferrous state. If chelating isproperly done it is effective, but itis very expensive and is so slowto release that it takes a long timeto produce a significant colorchange.

Ferromec, on the other hand, works right now! The PBI/Gordonpatented process of bonding fer-rous sulphate to the urea mole-cule not only keepsthe iron stable, butalso speeds up thep rocess of p lantintake.

Because plantshave such a vora-cious appetite fornitrogen, they ingestFerromec right nowvia foliar intake to getthe urea, and presto-chango...they ingestthe iron right alongwith the urea, and it'sgreen-up time in yourworld.

New Formulas for Multiple TankMixing and Soil Deficiencies

Amid last season's applausefor Ferromec were severalfriendly tips for making it evenbetter.

First of all, some lawn carecompanies wanted enhancediron mixing compatibility for multi-ple tank mix situations containingan amine herbicide. To fill this

need we have devel-oped Ferromec AC.

Others wanted anamine compatibleFerromec containingmanganese, and forthem we developedFerromec MAC aswell as Ferromec M.Still others wanted aFerromec to use insituations where thereare multiple micronu-trient deficiencies, andfor them we havedeveloped FerromecMZ.

These side-by-side containers of ManhattanEuonymus, pictured at a nursery, show whatFerromec can do for the nurseryman. The planton the right was as chloratic as the one on theleft before it was sprayed with Ferromec.

If You Have QuestionsAbout Iron, Talk toIronman Himself.

Iron is definitelyestablished as anessential micronu-trient required byall plants. Yet, theamount requiredcan vary dramati-cally depending onthe pH of the soil, the composition of the fertilizer that isbeing used and the plant that is beingfed.

To help you better understand howto use iron in your turf program, weinvite you to visit with Neal Howell, ourPlant Nutrition Product Manager. He isa leading authority on iron and is asnear as your telephone when you havequestions.

You'll like Neal. He lives, eats, andsleeps iron. Talk to him for a few min-utes and you'll know why everybodycalls him Ironman.
