About the new CBRN PAPR Standard
On October 6, 2006, NIOSH released a new CBRN standard for powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs)
MSA has partnered with Safety Tech to provide a system that passes the performance requirements of the new standard
Tight-fitting facepiece PAPRs are designed for First Responders
Loose-fitting facepiece PAPRs are designed for First Receivers
The Responder CBRN PAPR is MSA’s answer to the standard
The Responder CBRN PAPR is the first CBRN PAPR with tight-fitting facepiece to be approved by NIOSH
Background
Responder CBRN PAPR provides non-IDLH protection for extended periods of time for:
First Responders Military Personnel Special Operations Personnel
Background
Three Components C420 Blower
Purchased from Safety TechSame blower used by Safety Tech, Dräger, & ScottOver 50,000 fielded in the Apache Helicopter program,
U.S. Special Forces, Federal tactical units, and U.S. and U.K. Army NBC patient chemical casualty wrap programs

C420 PAPR
A belt-mounted powered air-purifying respirator that forces ambient air through filters to the facepiece
The motor-blower provides constant air flow of at least 115 lpm to the facepiece via the breathing tube
Reduces fatigue by virtually eliminating breathing resistance
Ideal for extended wear times
C420 PAPR
Creates a cooling effect that eliminates facepiece fogging and keeps the user more comfortable
Continuous air flow creates a slight positive pressure
EMI-shielded to MIL-STD-461C, so it won’t interfere with radio communications
PAPRs offer an OSHA-assigned protection factor 20 times greater than APRs
C420 PAPR
Basic kit includes: C420 PAPR Blower Belt (easy to
decontaminate) Air Flow Indicator 30” Breathing Tube Lithium Sulfur
Dioxide battery
Facepieces
Millennium Commercial version of MCU-2/P
(developed for Air Force during Operation Desert Storm)
Same facepiece as CBRN gas mask, so no need for multiple fit tests
Nose cup has 2 check valves to improve air flow, minimize lens fogging
Six-point head harness maximizes comfort, improves ease of donning
Drinking tube allows wearer to ingest water without removing mask
Facepieces
Ultra Elite Same facepiece as SCBA, so no
need for multiple fit tests Wide field of view Soft Hycar rubber Available with 5-point rubber or
SpeeD-ON® head harness Optional ClearCommand®
Amplifier for increased communication capabilities
CartridgesResponder Cartridge
NIOSH-approved for CBRN PAPR
CBRN-approved for both APR and PAPR
Provides longer service life for ammonia, formaldehyde, and acid gases than GME Cartridge
Cartridges
OptiFilter® XL HE Type H filter—a HEPA, P100 particulate
filter (99.97% efficient against all aerosols, oily and non-oily)
Effective against particulates (dusts and mists) but not poison gases or vapors
Filter efficiency improves with use, but users probably need to change filters when pressure drop gets too high for blower to operate effectively
Choose for dust-filled environments
CartridgesPAPR GME Multigas HE A combination cartridge comprised of P100 filter
and activated carbon bed to absorb poison gases and vapors
Filters out a broad spectrum of agents, such as: acid gases (including chlorine, sulfur dioxide, and chlorine dioxide), ammonia, formaldehyde, and organic vapors
Carbon bed lasts only as long as carbon is not saturated with chemical, so GME has a limited service life
Service life is a function of the challenge agent concentration and flow rate plus environmental factors (humidity and temperature)
Cartridge to choose for OSHA-regulated chemicals with concentrations >TLV
Options
Facepiece: Ultra Elite® or Millennium® (plus accessories)
Battery: Lithium-based single-use mission battery
Up to 8 hours of run time
Nickel-based rechargeable batteryUp to 4 hours of run time
