Initial situation The A83 at Rest and Be Thankful (RabT) in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, has beensubject to a number of landslide or mudslide events that have caused majordisruption to the traffic that regularly uses this key trunk road. The road wasclosed for several weeks in October 2007 when around 400 tonnes of materialwere deposited on the road when one such event occurred. Then in September2009 the road was again closed for 48 hours after 1070 tonnes of material wasdeposited after a more significant event.
Description BAM Ritchies, working closely with Geobrugg and Scotland Transerv, developed asolution of an eighty meters long, 4 m high shallow landslide barrier and 15.0 mwide VX ‘in-channel’ barrier nearby. These were installed in 2010. In 2012 asecond phase of works saw the installation of a further 83.0 m of shallowlandslide barrier at 3.5 m high. Another channel saw the instalation of both 25.0m by 5.0 m UX debris flow barrier above 9.0 m by 2.0 m VX debris flow barrier.
Incident of Saturday 5th December, 2015During storm Desmond that affected most parts of the UK a substantial landslideoccurred at the A83 Rest and be Thankful. This is an area that has sufferednumerous large landslide over the years and as such has numerous landslideand debris flow barriers have been installed. During the daytime on the 5th anevent estimated at 150m3 struck a Geobrugg SL-150 barrier, the barriersuccessfully held the landslide and there was no need to close the road. Afurther 100m3 event struck the barrier overnight and over the next few daysresidual small movement led to a total of ~300 m³ being held by the barrier. Thebarrier held all of this material without failure or damage, brake rings wereactivated as designed and the posts and bases suffered no damage. Thanks tothe Geobrugg SL-150 barrier the A83, a major transport route in this arearemained open.
