UPDATE ON MAMIE ST On April 1 Florida Georgia Grove (FGG) applied for a vegetation removal permit; this was issued on April 2. They requested removal of exotics and other non-native species. FGG was to initiate the work on April 28 but started four days earlier on April 24. Within a week the vegetation removal, and work on the seawall permit, was finished. The county stipulated that any excavation or vegetation removal be monitored by a certified archaeologist. FGG also has an outstanding permit to renovate the duplex. The destruction to this historic Indian mound is now regrettably complete.

FAREWELL TO A FAITHFUL FRIEND Pastor Morris J. Dantin, 76, of Chokoloskee, died peacefully in his sleep at home

on Monday, April 28. He was born and raised in Louisiana and had served six years in the United States Army. As a minister, he traveled in the Missions of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. In 1989 Pastor Dantin moved to Naples and became an Associate Pastor with the Naples Church of God, and in 1995 he became the Pastor of the Chokoloskee Church of God. He was a Bishop for the Church of God of Florida and served on the World Mission Board for the State of Florida. Pastor Dantin married the love of his life, Martha Buffington, on June 29, 1957. He is survived by Martha Dantin, his wife of 57 years, three children, Kathy Ann (Joey) Davaine of Larose, LA, Joey (Becky) Dantin of Montegut, LA, and Jennifer (Shannon) Hubbell of Naples; two brothers, Reverend Eno (Lurie) Dantin, Sr.,

and Javan (Marian) Dantin all of Golden Meadow, LA; 12 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Annette Ruiz. Pastor Dantin loved to fish, he loved people, and he dearly loved his family and his work for the Lord. Funeral Services were held on May 2 at Parkway Life Church in Naples where the family received friends. Burial services were followed at Palm Royale Cemetery with Military Honors. National Day of Prayer The National Day of Prayer in Everglades City was held on May 1 on the steps of City Hall. Mitch Mitchell began the program with spiritual music followed by welcoming remarks from Lisa Marteeny and City Councilwoman Elaine Middelstaedt. The Presentation of the Colors was officiated by representatives from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and from the Ochopee Fire Rescue District. Prayers were given by Chokoloskee Church of God Associate Pastor

Lynnette Morris, Everglades Community Church Rev. Dr. Bob Wallace and Holy Family Catholic Church Rev. Father Tim Navin. A luncheon was served afterwards in City Hall.

Big Cypress Zone 4 Closure Zone 4 airboat access within Big Cypress National Preserve was closed on April 7 due to low water conditions. This began the 60-day ORV closure for this management unit within the Preserve. Pending water levels, this unit will re-open for airboat access on June 6.

The next OFCD Advisory Committee Meeting will be Monday, May 12, at 4:00 pm in Port of the Islands Realty Office at 24998 Tamiami Trail, Naples. The Ochopee Fire Control District would like to inform the community of the recent Insurance Services Inspection rating. The present I.S.O. rating is a 6. The OFCD has been working for the last 3 years to reduce the rating. In October 2013 the I.S.O. conducted an inspection and review, and OFCD has just received the inspection report. The City of Everglades and all structures within five road miles of the station and have fire hydrants will be credited as an I.S.O. rating of 4 beginning July 1, 2014. This is a significant reduction for commercial occupancies. Copies of the I.S.O. letter for forwarding to insurance companies is available at the Fire Department located at 201 Buckner Ave in Everglades City.

The Naples Optimist Club had a youth appreciation day last week to honor three of our very own Everglades students. They are Blake Dahlke, my brother, and the 6th grade candidate; Stephanie Pablo-Ramirez, our 7th grade candidate; and our 8th grade candidate Bryce Kish. Next time you see these

three remember to congratulate them on their achievement. On Friday, May 9, we have an early dismissal, and the last day of school is just around the corner on June 4 so get ready to put on you bathing suit and head to the beach! Have you been to the new ice cream shop - Sweet Mayberry’s Café? It’s the most amazing and unique coffee shop I have ever seen. You should stop by and enjoy the amazing flavors and see all the artwork and wonders that are there. Our 4th grade class is going to hatch bobwhite quail for a little project. We have an incubator in the classroom, and it will take 23 days for them to hatch. I’ll keep you posted!

However, during all of the testing we still have many other activities going on. Some of these activities include Grad Bash at Universal, the Prom at the Marco Marriott, athletic awards banquet, field day, STEM competition, and baseball / softball state tournament competition. As you can see, it is not a time to slow down! We would like to take this time to highlight Blake Dahlke, Stephanie Pablo-Ramirez, and Bryce Kish who were recently recognized by the Optimist Club during the Youth Appreciation Event. In addition, we want to congratulate Kristin McMillin for being awarded a scholarship as our Winged-Foot Award recipient. Recipe for Good Eating

Mother’s Day Tea & Sandwiches submitted by Patricia Huff

Tea: Combine 3 tsp black tea leaves with ¼ cup chopped fresh mint. Add 4 cups of boiling water and serve with lemon slices, mint sprigs and sugar (or honey), if desired.

Sandwiches: Ingredients: 8 oz pkg softened cream cheese, 2 TBS Half-and-Half 2 TBS fresh chives (chopped), 12 slices rye or whole-wheat bread 1 cucumber (seedless), cut into very thin slices, 24 fresh basil leaves Combine cream cheese and Half-and-Half and beat until smooth; stir in the chives. Spread cheese mixture on 6 slices of the bread, top each with several slices of cucumber and basil leaves. Top with remaining slices of bread and cut into quarters. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve.

From Savannah’s Eyes Walking into the darkened room as my dress glided across the floor, I looked around at all the gold, and black and white decorations that covered the walls as the DJ played my favorite song. Seeing all the girls run up to each other, embracing as they conversed about how beautiful their dresses look. Looking up, all you could see was giant chandeliers that glistened along to its own rhythm. Above the DJ, stood an archway that we designed and made in art class that said on top “The Gatsby Gala.” It finally hit me that this was my junior prom.

It seems like yesterday I was going into 9th grade thinking “Wow, these four years are going to go by so slowly.” I was wrong. In art class we prepared all the decorations for this very moment, and all our hard work finally paid off. I wore a purple and gold gown that had glass stones going up and down the sides and in the cutouts on the bottom of the dress. My date that was so sweet matched me with a purple bow tie and a grey suit. When we arrived, we met in the lobby of the Marco Island Marriot (where we had our prom this year) and he gave me a beautiful corsage. When we were taking pictures, a little girl that stood near watched us and asked if we were getting married. I thought that was the cutest thing ever! We then went down and took some pictures around the resort and down by the beach. It was such a beautiful day and the sun shone strong. We went back inside to join the others and see who else arrived when I saw everyone in line checking in. After we checked in, we immediately all headed over to the photo booth and had a little fun with the fake mustaches and glasses. Then we were seated and served dinner. I had just finished eating my dessert when the DJ put on one of my favorite songs, and you can probably guess what I did next. I grabbed my best friend’s hand and we headed out onto the dance floor and rocked it down! I danced to almost every song (as usual at every dance or prom). Near the end it was time to announce the Prom King and Queen; we all surrounded the dance floor as the principal announced the winners. “Kristin McMillin for the Queen! And for the King Tyler Pasiuk!” The crowd roared and clapped as they both went forward to receive their sash and crowns. Then the traditional slow song came on for them to dance. After a little bit, we all started pouring into the dance floor with our dates to slow dance. When it was all over, some of us headed to the beach to walk down it for a little bit. The moon lit up the water and the waves rolled onto the shore. Is it strange to say that the beach looked more beautiful under the starry sky? Well it did; I’ve never seen anything more gorgeous! But overall, I had an amazing time at my junior prom and I can’t wait to see how it turns out next year at my Senior Prom! On another note I finally finished my first year at Edison State College! I took all my finals and now I’m done, well until next year (Senior Year). But it’s good to get a break and focus on only high school now and relax. Excited for my Senior Prom already! “The Great Crested Flycatcher, A Unique Little Bird”

At this time of year you can hear the Great Crested Flycatchers call . . . it's a loud WREEP! As the name implies, they have a small tuft or crest on their head that can help you more easily identify them. There are a few things that make this a unique little bird. First, they are the largest flycatcher in the genus Myiarchus. If you can catch a

glimpse they really have beautiful markings; Great Crested Flycatchers are reddish-brown above, with a brownish-gray head, gray throat and breast, and bright lemon-yellow belly, which is very visible when they are in flight. If they sit still long enough for you to enjoy one, they are very, very pretty. Unlike most flycatchers that feed low in trees, the Great Crested lives and feeds higher up in the canopy of mature trees. Their feeding habits are also unique (for a flycatcher). In addition to insects, the Great Crested also feeds on many native berries and seeds, so they have quite a varied diet. However, one of their most interesting and unique behaviors takes place during breeding season April-May. The Great Crested is a cavity dweller, meaning they live in hollowed out tree trunks (abandoned woodpecker holes, for example) or man-made nest boxes. It is the only member of the Myiarchus family to do so. If you were to investigate the contents of an abandoned nest after the young have flown (fledged), you would more than likely find something that is their nest cavity "calling card," a snakeskin. In the south, Florida in particular (where snakes are abundant), a snakeskin is present in almost every nest. The Audubon Society suggests this is to keep other birds away and to ward off other types of predators (other birds, rats, etc.)...so naturally if I see a snakeskin, I stretch it out conspicuously so a "flyer-by" can scoop it up. I have had the pleasure of a Great Crested family taking up residence in one of my nest boxes that I made out of a chunk of a chopped down palm tree. They prefer it if you can get them 12 to 20 feet up with a clear flight path to the 2" opening. (Palms are great one or two season nest boxes because they are easy to drill out, natural and available - when I see pieces, I'll pick them up for later use.) Great Crested's like a location that is private. They are skittish around humans and other animals, so place it where there is not a lot of activity. There are so many beautiful birds in our area that are on a bird-watchers bucket list. The Great Crested Flycatcher is one of them, and we get to hear them and see them all the time. The next time you are outside and hear a loud WREEP, you may not see it, but you will know it is one of EC's treasures - the Great Crested Flycatcher.

0.24 in. (2-6 mm) / Reproduces in upland areas including lawns, fields and woodlands / Found: Throughout Southwest Florida. Ants, along with termites, represent one of the most successful species of insects in the world. There are 11,000 known species of ants to date (more are added yearly), 700 species in North America, 207 native species in Florida, 53 exotic species and two species of imported fire ants. The most notorious and familiar is Solenopsis invicta Buren, which is the imported, Brazilian fire ant most southerners are all too familiar with. The invicta (which means unconquered) fire ant first arrived in Florida via the port of Mobile, Alabama, between 1933 and 1945. From there it has spread to every state in the South, as far north as Virginia and west to California. The sheer scope of its current range makes eradication of this invasive and notorious insect impossible at this point in time. Fire ants originated in the grasslands of Brazil where their mounds of dirt helped to keep them out of danger during the annual floods of the rainy season. When accidently stepped upon, the worker ants react in defense of their nest, crawling up the legs of the intruder and, through the release of pheromones by the lead ant, the entire colony is signaled to bite at once. The result can not only be excruciatingly painful but sometimes even deadly. For smaller animals, such as alligator hatchlings, baby sea turtles, fledgling birds and small mammals, this en masse bite can cause paralysis and death. Some humans are allergic to the toxins in fire ants and their stings can cause the victim to go into anaphylactic shock, requiring immediate medical attention. Worldwide, dozens of people succumb to fire ant bites annually. In fact, worldwide more people are killed by fire ant bites than shark bites annually. In the United States alone, more than $5 billion dollars is spent annually on medical treatment, damage and control in invicta infested areas. The bite of a fire ant is incredibly painful. In fact it is not a bite at all but a sting, which originates from the abdomen and injects a toxic-alkaloid venom into its victim called solenopsin. It feels as if someone has taken a lit match and held it against your skin, and the welts that result from these bites can last for weeks. Treating the bites properly is essential to avoid infection. To start with, do not squeeze or pick at the pustule as that will greatly increase the chances of infection. Wash the bite with antibacterial soap for two minutes or longer. Disinfect the site using betadine, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. If it continues to itch, apply a dab of hydrocortisone cream to the site. Cover with a band aid and repeat the process three times a day until it is healed. The best way to rid your yard of fire ant mounds is through the use of various chemical applications available at most hardware stores. Pouring boiling hot water on the mound can also sometimes work, but the queen, who can lay up to 1,500 eggs per day, is sometimes hidden below ground as deep as seven feet, so boiling water is not always effective. People have been known to soak the nests in gasoline, then light the ground on fire. Aside from being exceedingly dangerous, it has been proven to be completely ineffective if not outright stupid. Fire ants are eaten by only a handful of birds in the United States and in reality have few natural predators in their newfound range. They displace native ants and are very damaging to a host of native flora and fauna.

Off the Shelf Book Review

"Ghosts of Chokoloskee" by Rick Magers

Imagine talking with Ted Smallwood, Edgar Watson, Dan House, and all the characters associated with the famous killing in 1910 in Chokoloskee. That’s what Rick Magers has done for us when they come back as ghosts in his new novel. The Sage of Chokoloskee, G.C. McKinney, makes an appearance, as does Adolphus Santini who tangled with Watson in Key West. What if Watson also arrives that night – can two ghosts fight? The past mingles with the present, fiction with real life, but the setting remains mostly at the Smallwood Store where the narrator (an author) moors his house boat. You will recognize real people you know like Lynn & Gary McMillin and places like Triad Seafood where they talk about Mrs. Webb being bitten by an alligator. That leads to the story of the “beer worms” lady out in Ochopee. There’s plenty of local color, some of it humorous. The author is outspoken about recent events – the destruction of Mamie Street and the struggle against the neighboring developers. He says Mamie “probably turned over in her grave when she saw that,” referring to the road named after her. Rick Magers has written a number of books on various subjects. He sells and signs them at the Smallwood Store & Museum when he is in the area. You can also purchase “Ghosts of Chokoloskee” from Rick at the Museum of the Everglades on Wednesday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. He will be giving a talk on this subject with a book signing following the presentation. MUSEUM of the Everglades Pauline Reeves Gallery May Artist

Muffy Clark Gill’s exhibit "The 20th Century Seminole Experience: Paintings from the Florida Indian Tribes Series" continues through the end of May. In 1990, Muffy became interested in Florida’s historic Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, specifically from the period dating from the 1890s to the 1990s. She researched and collected historical documents and the oral histories of the life and work of these early Florida settlers. Informed by this intriguing historic data, she began the “Florida Indian Tribes” series of paintings, exploring ways to give the viewer a fresh historical perspective of an Indian tribe which continues to inhabit and impact south Florida, preserving and interpreting in a new way an important part of its local history. Muffy Clark Gill is an award-winning southwest Florida artist and has had over twenty solo exhibitions. In February 2015 this exhibition will travel to the State Capital building in Tallahassee, where it will be shown in their gallery until June 30, 2015. Please join us to welcome Muffy Clark Gill at a reception hosted by the Friends of the Museum on Saturday, May 10, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. It is an extraordinary exhibit not to be missed! New Museum Manager Appointed Jennifer Perry has been appointed the new manager of our Museum of the Everglades! Jennifer worked as the Services and Volunteer Coordinator with Collier County Museums from 1998 to 2002. She then served as Executive Director of the Jamali Fine Art Gallery, supervising and training gallery staff before taking a break to teach school when her children were born. Jennifer graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor’s degree in Art History. Stop in and welcome Jennifer to our community.

Our town is getting a make-over with the restoration of the historic boat lift in the same bright colors designed by Kenneth Noland; work by Donnie Seabury. McLeod Park pavilion has also been recently re-painted with new colors, light yellow, green and white.

RESTAURANT NEWS Camellia Street Grill will close on May 16 through June 1 and will re-open on June 2 for dinner only (4:00 to 9:00 p.m.) Tuesday through Saturday (closed Sunday-Monday). Stone crab season ends on May 15 and will remain closed until October 15. Grimm’s Stone Crab will close during the off-season on May 16. Beginning the day after Memorial Day on May 27, Glades Haven will close earlier. New hours will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Sweet Mayberry’s Café is open 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Triad will continue to stay open, closing just an hour earlier. New hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.



Florida Tales by Chester Keene “Major James Gavin Storter,

Naples Hometown Hero”

James Gavin Storter was born in Naples, Florida, on Valentine’s Day 1939 in a house where Tin City is now. He was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame in 2004. He is the son of the late George Milton Storter. “Major James Gavin Storter is inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame for his

unfailing devotion to duty and valorous actions against the armed enemies of the United States. On January 30th, 1966, then Sergeant First Class Storter was advising a Vietnamese Airborne Battalion when a nearby friendly unit became pinned down, in open rice paddies, by heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire. Notified that two American advisors had been wounded and were missing, Sergeant First Class Storter immediately left his position, exposed himself to intensive enemy fire, and began searching the forward areas of the battlefield. Locating one of the severely wounded men, Sergeant First Class Storter administered emergency medical treatment and carried his comrade through a heavy volume of enemy fire to a sheltered position. Disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Storter again exposed himself to the enemy fire to search for the other wounded American until the injured man had been located. On June 24th, 1969, then Captain Storter, led a reconnaissance in force operation deep in enemy controlled territory to capture an enemy village. When his lead platoon was pinned down by enemy fire, Captain Storter rushed forward through open terrain under intense enemy fire to reach his platoon. From an exposed position, he then directed his rear elements to move forward and place heavy suppressive fire on the enemy position. While awaiting the arrival of helicopter gunships, Captain Storter personally employed a 60-millimeter mortar against the enemy. Upon arrival of the supporting gunships, Captain Storter led a successful attack, routing the enemy. The unit then moved on to capture its original objective. During his third tour of duty in Vietnam, Captain Storter assembled a four-man military free fall parachute team (HALO) to conduct a reconnaissance mission deep into enemy territory. August 10th, 1971, the team jumped from 15,000 feet, conducted their reconnaissance mission and were safely extracted four days later. Captain Storter led the first successful combat HALO mission in U.S. Military history. Major Storter completed his Ranger career by serving as a Ranger Instructor and Commander of the Florida Ranger Camp. Major Storter surely lived the Ranger Creed as he confronted the enemies of the United States.” (direct quote from the Ranger Book) Chester Keene is a retired law enforcement officer and Florida native. Remembering Pastor Dantin In my almost 60 years of ordained ministry I have never met a fellow clergyman like this man. He had an infectious Christian spirit. A wonderful smile. A hearty laugh. And a deep concern for those in need. We had many talks together through the years as fellow pastors and friends. He had a vision for his church and its members. Whenever and wherever there was a need, he met it. And when there was a soul needing to be fed, he was ready with Scripture and prayer. Morris had a marvelous memory for Scripture and was always ready to quote the Bible to make a point. He travelled constantly as a Bishop and took his leadership role very seriously, especially when counseling young clergy under his watchful care. Though we have five churches in our community, Morris was always ready to help at the Easter Sunrise Service, National Day of Prayer and the Community Food Bank. We could always count on Pastor Dantin being at Community Church fund raising to purchase a dinner for himself and his Martha. Whenever he was with us, the room lit up with his presence. Everyone was always so happy to see him. He

was a good preacher. A trusted counsellor. A fine Pastor. A wonderful husband and father. And a good friend.

He was the example spoken of in 1 Peter 3:15: “Set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess.” That is the way Morris Dantin lived. That is the way he died. He will be missed.

OBITUARY JEFFERY ALLAN WHITE 59

Jeff White passed away on April 21. He and his wife Beth lived on Chokoloskee Island and together they previously owned Parkway Motel & Marina. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Everett White; and his brother, Paul White. He is survived by his wife, Beth White; his mother, June Daniels of Labelle; his sisters, Janet Spindle and Mona (Bruce) Tanner of Labelle, and Wanda (Marty) Whiddon of Felda; along with numerous nieces and nephews. A private memorial service was held in Labelle on April 26. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in honor of Jeff to ReachOut Everglades, P.O. Box 894, Chokoloskee, FL 34138. ReachOut is the non-profit organization benefiting local children and their families.
