Restless Somalia: intervention or prosperity?February 19, 2012 12:34 pm 0 comments

The British government plans to deepen its involvement in Somalia, and have invited more than 40 government sand organisations from around the world to a conference on the issue on 23 February. But activist organisationFight Racism! Fight Imperialism! are campaigning against the planned military involvement there.

Graham Vincent

The East African country of Somalia has long been afflicted by civil war and poverty, and has routinely condonedimperialist interference in the past.

Absorbed into the British Empire, by force, as a protectorate in 1920, Somalia has a history of being subject toimperialism.

Fast forward 90 years and the threats are ever graver for the country. Somalia is gripped by civil war, andal-Qaeda’s affiliate terrorist cell al-Shabaab controls large swathes of the country.

This acts to reaffirm British PM David Cameron’s judgement that Somalia is a failed state that directly threatensBritish interests.

A number of strategies will be discussed during the London Somalia conference with the objective of delivering anew international approach to Somalia.

But Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! are categorically againstmilitary “intervention” in the country. It interprets imperial “intervention” entirely differently, highlighting the warsin Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo and Libya as evidence of what it really means – bombings, proxy wars and invasionsfor the sake of natural resources, strategic manoeuvres and profit.

A joint World Bank and UN report ranks Somalia as the second most important country for unexploited oil reservesin North East Africa. Oil exploration in the Puntland region is expected to yield up to 4 billion barrels of oil fromtwo wells.

Bauxite deposits have been found in Mana Daimir, 250,000 tonnes of untapped atomic minerals exist in Alio Ghelleand the Bur region, and an estimated 10 million metric tonnes of Titanium reserves lie in the Giubi River.

But Somalia’s location – sitting on the tip of the Horn of Africa south of the Gulf of Aden, a crucial part of the SuezCanal shipping route – plays into the hands of Somali pirates. An estimated 21,000 ships pass through the Gulf ofAden each year, carrying approximately 11% of the world’s petroleum. 25 ships were hijacked for ransom in 2011;the West feels it has to diffuse the Somalia ‘problem’.

Two foreign aid workers kidnapped in Somalia – American JessicaBuchanan, 32, and Dane Poul Thisted, 60 – were freed in January in a US military raid seen as the highest profileUS action in Somalia since it pulled its forces out of the country in 1994.

Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! are also confronting racism in Britain, after Cameron claimed that “young Britishminds are poisoned by radicalism” from Somalia.

They believe Cameron has stoked the fire of racism at home and abroad, and that this will result in even moresuspicion and repressive treatment of black people – whom they argue are already 27 times more likely to beharassed by police – and the dividing of communities.

The message to David Cameron and his associates is simple: No “intervention”!
