Landscape RestorationHandbookDONALD HARKER, SHERRI EVANS, MARC EVANS,AND KAY HARKERThe Earth Fund, Frankfort, Kentucky

Landscape Restoration Handbook, a joint publicationof the U.S. Golf Association and the Audubon Societyof New York State, is a comprehensive guide that dem-onstrates how to use naturalization as an alternative tomore intensive management of the landscape. The bookdiscusses how to obtain the following benefits of naturallandscaping or ecological restoration projects:¯ Water quality improvement

¯ Erosion reduction¯ Lower maintenance¯ Chemicals reduction¯ Ecosystem and ecological community protection¯ Plant and animal species diversity

Landscape Restoration Handbook explains how todevelop a natural landscaping or ecological restorationprogram and gives a broad-based program for education, regional planning, and increased biological diversity. Thebook also provides an extensive list of scienthqc and com-mon plant names associated with ecological communitiesthroughout the United States. Plant characteristics coveredin each listing include plant type, environmental tolerance, aesthetic codes, wildlife value, color, bloom time, andlandscape uses. The book also contains a list of nurseriesthat propagate and sell native plants throughout theUnited States. Landscape Restoration Handbook is or-ganized by region so that urban planners, landscape andgolf course architects, horticulturalists, golf course superin-tendents, and consultants can find the specific informationthey need to plan and implement a natural landscaping orecological restoration program.

RESEARCH SCIENTIST: ECOLOGICAL FORESTRY

Tall Timbers Research Station invites applications from scientists who are interested in developinga program of research in ecological forestry. The mission will be to develop a research program thatwill identify how forest resources can be utilized while ecological components of southern pinesystems are sustained. Program will focus on applied, management-oriented aspects of southern pineforest ecology in the matrix of the longleaf pine ecosystem in the Red Hills Physiographic Provinceand the Southeastern Coastal Plain. A major component of this program will focus on unevenagedmanagement, silvicultural selection systems, and development of timber management strategies thatmimic ecosystem processes. Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Forestry, ForestEcology, or Forest Management, Silviculture, or closely related field. Research and managementexperience with fire-type forest ecosystems a plus. Experience with design and administration oftimber sales and harvest operations also essential. Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, data basemanagement skills, geographic information systems and computer modeling also essential. Preferapplicants with additional background and publication record in restoration ecology, plant ecology, wildlife ecology or management. Must have philosophical agreement with consumptive andsustainable uses of forest and wildlife resources. Must also have a willingness to explore, research, quantify and contrast traditional and alternative forest management systems. Opportunities exist foruniversity affiliation and advising graduate students. Submit curriculum vitae, university transcriptsand three letters of recommendation to: Dr. Leonard A. Brennan, Director of Research, TallTimbers Research, Inc. Route 1, Box 678, Tallahassee, FL 32312. Applications will be accepteduntil 1 September 1994. Telephone: (904-893-4153); FAX (904-668-7781). Tall Timbers Research,Inc. is a privately-endowed and publicly-supported non-profit ecological research station founded in1958. EOE.
