What is Restorative Care?

Restorative care, commonly known as Nursing Rehab, is a way to incorporate therapy into everyday personal care, such as transferring, eating, dressing, toileting and moving in bed

The goal of restorative care is to help residents do as much for themselves as they are capable of, as a way to ensure their dignity and physical functioning is preserved

Who does Restorative Care?

Restorative care is primarily done by PSWs in the course of the care they provide residents

PSWs are doing restorative care every day without taking credit for their efforts

That is about to change, with the start of the Restorative Care Nurse position

What will the Restorative Care Nurse be doing?

The Restorative Care Nurse will be starting the work of formally assessing what the areas of focus will be for individual residents in their Restorative Care, and will implement that into the daily routines for residents, their care plans etc

She will also be providing training to PSWs in Restorative Care, and will then delegate residents’ programming to PSWs over time

Page 7: Restorative Care Nurse Engaging PSWs in Optimal Resident Outcomes

How will we find time for that?

PSWs are already doing Restorative Care in daily routines with residentsThe difference will be that PSWs will get credit for their efforts through formal documentation of them on the tick sheetsBeing able to document this work will reflect the residents’ strengths and challenges and the great work PSWs do to help them be the best they can be

What other reasons are there to do this work?

Restorative Care, in conjunction with Physiotherapy, increases funding levels for residents via RAI MDS

Increased funding levels allows for more resident care through higher staffing levels

Everybody wins
